Elliot Goldenthal - HEAT - Rejected Score - Finale

Michael Mann is somewhat notorious for constantly fiddling with the music for his films. It's not uncommon for him to hire multiple composers unbeknownst to each other. In the case of the classic 1995 thriller "Heat" Mann had two composers score the end of the film. Elliot Goldenthal wrote a majestic piece that bookended the film nicely by referencing his music from the opening scene. In the end, Michael Mann threw out Goldenthal's piece in favor of "God moving over the face of the Waters" by the artist Moby.
Fortunately, Goldenthal's gorgeous music would not go to waste - he later adapted his theme into the 1996 historical biopic "Michael Collins" starring Liam Neeson.
Goldenthal's unused Heat cue was made available through promotional means (it did not appear on the official soundtrack CD) and I have carefully mixed it back into the film with the correct timing for your viewing pleasure.

Good lord, this is beautiful. I can't dismiss the original cut with Moby's track but Goldenthal is a master. Wow, man tears, for real.

What makes the original ending so great is the sharp shift in tone at the end just like Neil and Vincent at the end where they embrace and show each other respect. It goes from a tough gritty drama to an almost sad but also very uplifting ending. Both scores are 10/10 and I wouldn’t complain if this was in the movie instead. But I’d never replace the original as much as I do love this one

As much as I love the ending as it is, I kind of prefer this. This score is darker and heavier than Moby's piece, which fits the tone of the film (and especially of this scene) a lot better. But the existing ending is what it is, music and all, and I still love it.

It's hard to say which one feels 'right' w/o watching it from to back, but this cue is incredibly badass.

for any curious, this track is called "Hand in Hand" and you can find it on soundcloud. there are several downloader options.

When Pacino takes Deniro's hand it builds hard to a powerful finale but Moby gently begins earlier and continues through the scene while capturing in music the crushing moment of the moments of Deniro stretching out his hand. Moby killed it but Elliot is still solid.

Absolutely beautiful. Mann should have kept Goldenthal's piece in the movie.

Absolutely beautiful. A truly great and rousing piece. But for this scene, IMO Mann made the right decision, Moby’s track emphasises the tragedy of the existentialism these two characters have.

I'm curious what combination of harmonics, rhythm, melody, and/or counterpoint illustrate "the tragedy of existentialism" in music. Asking as a composer who has no idea what the hell you're talking about.
@spaceodds1985
@spaceodds1985 2 года назад
@@jg2904 The tragedy of existentialism in the fact that Moby’s piece for me signifies a sadness to the lives of these characters. No one understands Vincent better than Neil did and Vincent has to take him down. These characters IMO embody a cynical viewpoint of the world that keeps them alone and ultimately they will be forgotten, Moby’s piece emphasis on a motif that to me reminds me of water and the ocean ala the souls and memories of these characters are being trickled and ultimately swept away. When Neil watches the ocean from his house in the night, and then tells Vincent about his dream of drowning, he personally thinks its all about having enough time, when in fact it can also be interpreted as being swept away and disposed of. As a composer pray tell me what you get out of Moby’s piece?

Prefer the Moby ending, but this isn't too bad either. End scene is still epic. You really need a good piece of music to finish it. Either choice wouldn't be bad.

The score, nevertheless brilliant, feels like a sombre victory than a existential loss, which is the feeling Mann was going for I suppose. Moby's original music feels like, "Damn, i had to kill a guy who was exactly like me, but from another world. Shame. We couldve been friends" Goldenthal's feels like, "Damn. I finally killed you. Sucks, but...finally gotcha. Its not the proudest thing to happen, but...yeah. It did."

this is better than moby's version and i grew up watching this flick always thinking it was one of the most emotional perfect end scene scores of all time. elliot goldenthal's version starts off eerie and continues to build and build throughout. incredible power. the goosebumps are uncontrollable.

+Topher MacLeod I want to agree as it's an awesome piece, but Moby's track is just too perfect for the end of this movie, eyes well up and goosebumps every time. Perhaps you could put any track to this and it would work because the entire movie is a masterpiece........Wake me up before you go go - Wham? lol

It worked so well in Michael Collins though. If it was me, I still would have kept this in Heat. I think the score in the credits should keep you in the film. I’m not a fan of songs that take me out of the world of the film. I would always rather have score.

Wow, just stumped into this, Goldenthal has some marvelous unique moments in great movies, and the ending with Moby made me brake. But I´m sure it would´ve had the same energy with both, cannot think of a more complicated decision and simple at the same time. Moby was just in his infancy with scores, so it was a really good choice for something unique and masterful.

I disagree. This music lends a majestic and noble quality to the scene. The type of music that is expected at a warriors death. They should have left it in. It lends itself greatly to the climax of the film.

I think it’s great and it could’ve been used in the movie and not affected or taken anything away from the scene. But mobys version meticulously cues every movement of the each characters in the scene, and i can’t picture the scene ending with out his version. But still both are equally great and I’m sure it was a head scratcher for Michael Mann. And Elliot did incredible with JD does at the end of public enemies.

this track goes hard! I can see any number of other directors (including Nolan) being stoked to end on this, but Mann had the discipline to find something that may be less Epic but is even more transcendent :')

This is excellent. I feel this would be better suited if the scope of the scene was more bigger. I think they picked Moby's theme because it was faster moving and more simple. Very good nonetheless. An excellent signature to the story.

I have to disagree with a lot here... after listening to this and the Moby version back to back, I like this a lot better. Moby's music doesn't really kick in until the very end when Al is standing over Robert's dead body. This has an actual build up to him passing away and to the end credits. Even then, I never bought that Al would have a better shot than DeNiro would have (being that Al would be blinded by the lights, whereas he's lit up like a christmas tree for DeNiro to hit with ease).

This music should have been used for the credits after the final scene ends. Instead of them just carrying the final song on until the credits are finished...they should have faded out the released song after about 35 seconds into the credits and started playing this one. Both tracks deserve to be in the movie.

I feel the music intrudes too much, despite being great. The scene in the film works better with less music, it increases the tension. Sometimes, if a piece is replaced or just removed, we just dont need music in scene.

Goldenthal's score is epic. It should have been used. This is a fight to the death of two warrior's. It needed a score that was Wagnerian in scope. With Goldenthal, that was achieved. While the Moby score is very good, it lacked the power to accompany this powerful ending.
