Heat: Unused Original Finale Score by Eliot Goldenthal

Michael Mann's masterpiece movie "Heat", starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, was originally supposed to end on this piece of original score by composer Eliot Goldenthal. Instead, a special rendition of Moby's "God Moving Over the face of the Waters" was used. Goldenthal's theme was then adapted and used for the finale of Neil Jordan's movie "Michael Collins", starring Liam Neeson.
Image is an acrylic painting based on the film's final frame. Music hosted for the curiosity of movie and music fans, and is non-profit.

it's nice but a litlle too dramatic, the moby's score is perfect because it convey the tracgic end of the film better, not just sad, tragic but at the sametime uplifting because it aslo mark a new start for hannah.

I remember hearing this at the end of Michael Collins and thinking that this piece alone made watching the movie worthwhile, even if it was an interesting movie otherwise. It's a shame it never got the recognition it deserved because it is truly incredible

Sounds almost like the music played when Dillinger (Depp) gets assassinated in one of Mann's other great crime-thrillers 'Public Enemies'. If so, it was obviously tweaked for that film. Not the EXACT same as here, but the bars sound very similar. Powerful stuff, but do I agree with some others below....Moby's music captures the feeling longing & loss of both characters. And the sense DeNiro was taking off to somewhere else, ensuring his fate of not being attached to anything & Pacino had found what he had been longing for, but now lost it. It was the realization of that, sad & yet beautiful all at once. Fulfilling. Hence the imagery of Bobby facing one way & Al facing the other. You couldn't get a more complete ending than that. One of the MOST (if not THE most) iconic & moving final scenes in motion picture history in the last half century! My opinion, the MOST epic! (sorry for using that type of language;) Love, love, LOVE this film forever! Thank you Michael Mann :)

To be honest, this actually fits the tone of the movie more than the Moby one. But I still think that the Moby one is better. This final score felt very tough and dramatic like the entirety of the movie and it would've worked it they used it. However, the Moby finale score made the ending feel sad but also uplifting which was a sharp shift in tone to end the movie which worked to perfection. I'd love to see a version with this song implemented but the Moby finale will always be the best

There is melancholy in Moby's tune, plus De Niro's dead body and Pacino's sad expression sell the fact the ending of Heat is a sad ending. But the rising tempo and softer sounds of Moby's music add an element of positivity to the ending. With Pacino in the center frame, holding on to De Niro's dead body, it almost feels like both men have ascended. De Niro ascended to the great afterlife (even though the movie is fairly agnostic), and maybe Pacino is ascending in a different manner. Both Pacino and De Niro are similar men and are both on the same path of destruction. Maybe Pacino will not make the same mistake as De Niro.

You can’t go wrong with Moby’s finale, which fit the ending perfectly. However I do prefer this, but it’s like the difference between 10 and 9.99999999 forever. But to be honest, Goldenthall’s piece works better in Michael Collins because he incorporates all those strings to add a Gaelic feel to it, and it makes it so much stronger. So this is that rare situation where everyone won: Heat got a moving finale to (in my view) one of the greatest films ever made. Michael Collins got that unbelievably awesome piece to end the film, making the old black and white videos of Collins’s funeral incredibly powerful. And fans got to hear and enjoy both.

To me, the correct score was used for each movie. "Michael Collins" is the story of a man whose life and death left a massive impact _on an entire country,_ so an epic-sounding score was appropriate. "Heat" ends with a quietly reflective moment after a struggle between two individuals, so a more subdued score was appropriate IMO.

This ended up being used for the closing of Michael Collins. It is a phenomenal piece of music with such an enormous emotional scope that I would argue it is too good for Michael Collins. But once you know it was written for this it makes total sense. Nearly three hours of building mood and tension cascading into it's beautiful finish.
@Messines17
@Messines17 8 лет назад
+thedavescloop I would disagree, I think it fits Michael Collins quite well, especially while played over the actual footage of his funeral. The chosen score for the ending of heat while less dramatic is more subtle and fitting to the scene.
