i think that was the main reason why his marriage had the problems it did. He wasn't able to keep his work at work. Even at home being a dad, I think he acted more like a cop than a father. He said he would consult with his wife on any disciplining of the kids, and then unilaterally punishes them when they do wrong. It got to the point where he and his wife were separated. And I recall his daughter, perhaps the eldest one, basically told him that he had a decision to make - be a part of their lives, or not! I know what drove him to turn in his papers and leave SVU. And I wonder if his family were glad because now he could be a part of their lives all the time and act like a father rather than a cop. I know his wife was killed, and he joined OC to go after his wife's killer. What I don't know is whether or not this affected his kids. Was he with the kids to help them cope, or did he more or less abandoned them to focus on going after the killer? As good a cop Stabler might be, and as good a father he might be, I don't think he ever found the balance between being the two of them. I think he's going to reach a point where he's going to self-destruct, resulting in him losing both his job and his family. If that hasn't happened already.

@@ytafan4068 His daughter tld him that because she found out he and Kathleen were seeing each other for sex afer they separated. Kinda defeats the purpose of separating. It's implied either that Elliot was more attentive with Eli while in Italy, thus the lack of attention coupled with his mother's death led to Eli turning to drugs, or that Elliot still never paid much attention to Eli and was still a cop. Eli's the only child OC focuses on primarily since most of his kids are already full adults with families.

Haha right. My dad was an early riser due to his work, but when my brother or I would barge into his room with our petty shit and he was still in bed, he’d have the same reaction. Like, “What time is it?” or “It’s too early for this shit. Is your mom up yet? Go bother her.”

I remember that. They were playing soccer, she was the goalie, and he made a not-so-subtle reference to them coming at her from every angle. She said it, but he didn't respond. She kicked the ball to him, and he just stood there, dumbfounded, completely unable to say anything.

I got the same feeling about Kathy. She was always trying to be the "good" guy so Stabler was always playing the "bad" guy with his kids. I think a lot of stuff that happened with the kids would not have happened if they just established a united front.

I agree Kathy was in the wrong to slap him, she wasn’t even trying to help, but Elliot did go over her head and make a massive decision that would effect their child’s life forever. He wasn’t totally in the right either. It’s a damn good thing Liv arranged for his mother to talk to Kathleen to accept the plea.

My mom was like this too. I was living at home in college (expensive city, my school was small and didn’t have a dorm, so I couldn’t afford to live on my own), and I was 22 and wanted to go to a party at a hotel with my friends. The party was literally four or five blocks away. We had a MASSIVE fight, she said there was no way in hell I was going to a party at a hotel with boys after dark. My mom can get real scary and real mean when she’s angry, so I backed down. A few weeks later, my friends were having another party, same hotel. I lied to my mom a couple days in advance, said I was going to a girlfriend’s house to study and hang out and that I’d probably stay the night so my girlfriend could drink if she wanted without needing to worry about taking me home. I had my friend on standby just in case my mom tried to “verify” it but she didn’t. I went to the party, had a great time, ended up spending the night, walked home in the morning so I could be there in time to walk my dog on schedule. Idk if she ever found out, and maybe she did, but if she did, she never confronted me. I think she had her suspicions, and my mom isn’t stupid, but her constant helicopter parenting style made me good at lying when I need to, so who knows. I know why she’s so paranoid, her childhood was bad and her dad was actually a homicide detective for decades, so she knows what’s out there. But at a certain point, you gotta let your kids make decisions on their own.
