Ellis Burks was Really, Really Good

And That's Baseball

There's a good chance you've never heard of Ellis Burks, but he was one of the best hitters in baseball during the late 90s and early 2000s. He protected guys like Larry Walker, Barry Bonds, Frank Thomas, and Jim Thome in the order. If it wasn't for injuries, he would probably be in the Hall of Fame. This is his story.

The thing that frustrated me the most about making this is that there’s so little footage of him out there, even though he was such a good ball player. I tried presenting his greatness for those who never saw him play. Thanks for the support!

I went to about 30 home games in 1996, and I can often remember that he was always the most underappreciated player in Denver. I would look up at the scoreboard and see numbers close to Castilla, Walker and Bichette but he also was a good outfielder. When that team, at Coors, shelled Greg Maddux, I knew they were stacked.

The thin air og Colorado would make an above average player turn into an All-Star (Dante Bichette) and an All-Star caliber player (Larry Walker) into a Hall of Famer. Burks was sort of in the middle of those two players in terms of talent. He was a good player at Boston but nobody who saw him early in his career would have ever predicted he would put up the numbers he did in 1996 which ranks in the pantheon of All-Time greatest single seasons in MLB history. That said, I have often wondered what would have happened if a player like Ken Griffey Jr played in Colorado during his prime? Like, what would that thin air do to the stats of a player who was destined to go to Cooperstown before be ever stepped to the plate in Colorado?
@AndThatsBaseball
@AndThatsBaseball Год назад
Walker was that good before and after Colorado, burks had some of his best seasons after leaving. Bichette, though, was almost fully a product of the park
@MarquisdeSuave
@MarquisdeSuave Год назад
@@AndThatsBaseball yeah, Walker was an All-Star level player in Montreal but he became Ted Williams in Colorado. I would have LOVED to have seen Wade Boggs play in Colorado, even if it was after his prime.
