My favourite movie score of his is Hawaii .The ingenious way he uses the French Horns to portray the Native Hawaiians playing the conch shells.

I knew and worked with Elmer for some years, We had a few disagreements along the way, but always remained mates. I produced a re-issue of the RCA Victor soundtrack of "Summer and Smoke", which is one of my favourite Bernstein scores. Elmer commented favourable on the quality of the mastering and the pressing. I miss Elmer to this very day. He was certainly the most versatile of the major composers working in Hollywood.

Something Aspel did not mention is the music magazine that Elmer founded and for which he actitvely solicited writers and features. This was very special to him. I don`t recall how I met Elmer, but after we did we used to meet about once a week for lunch and chat. He was a wellspring of information. He had been married a few times and I recall his mentioning it gets easier each time. I also remember him telling me the reason he was working all the time is that he always got his assignments in on time and at prices the studios liked. He also told me a funny story about Geroge Segal whom I also interviewed but I think I`ll keep that for my memoirs. Hitchcock`s composer Bernard Herrmann mentored Elmer by the way.

Mr.Berstein was such a unique film score composer that left an indelible mark on the silver screen and I admire him greatly as a person. His music impacted me immensely when I saw the Magnificient Seven, The Great Escape and The Ten Commandments as a kid.

Five years before this there were celebrations for Bernstein's 75th birthday and he gave a series of concerts with the Scottish National Symphony Orchestra including one at the Royal Festival Hall. I was producing a film music strand for radio at the time and got on to the publicity people to see if I could get an interview with the great man. Unfortunately, I'd left it a bit late in the day and I was told the schedule was tight, but they'd see what they could do. Well, I never heard back and it had been a long shot, but anyway, I went along to the concert which was great. Next morning though, I'm at my desk and the phone rings and the distinctive voice speaks ... 'Is that Mr. McKenna?' It was the composer himself wanting to apologise that he'd not been able to fit me in'. WHAT A GENTLEMAN! We chatted about this and that and I congratulated him on the concert etc. and made a commitment to do some whenever he might be back in time. So, no, I didn't get to interview but I did get to talk with him. About the same time, a colleague of mine got a great interview with Jerry Goldsmith with the two of them doing it perch on the edge of his hotel bed. A reminder that Hollywood's great composers are the gents, unfailingly modest and polite.

As a serious collector of film scores, Elmer Bernstein was AWESOME(I have a TON of Bernstein scores). My favorite score composed by him is "Ghostbusters" with my 2nd being "The Magnificent Seven". Another God from Mt. Olympus gone too soon.

Fabulous - I was at the RAH that night to witness this '80th Birthday Celebration' concert with the RPO. Wednesday 9th October. Sadly, he died less than 2 years later on 18th August 2004.
