confident man...he believes everything he says. succinct. 30 of 33 bought for the big screen...that is insane success. He's almost a screenwriting that became a novelist.
En Toto, I agree! Yes, Dutch knew his trade. He was a doer, not a talker, unlike a lot of writers I know in L.A. I write novels but have worked on screenplays. I don't care for screenwriting. But Dutch had what I call quiet discipline. He got it done. He had a formula and it worked. The odd thing is that the literary world finally came around to him towards the end of his life and realized what a literary master he was. His books still said something about humanity, even if he was dealing with lowlifes. After all, he wrote about human nature, which ain't always pretty in the big city. Or on the range. I love his westerns. Some of the best ever. If you haven't read one of his westerns you don't know what you're missing. Some of the best ever penned.
He's outstanding. First book I read by him was SPLIT IMAGES. I thought it couldn't get much better than that. I was happily wrong. Cat Chaser is considered one of his worst and I absolutely loved it. While everybody loves his books, which ones are his best are mostly subjective.
I agree with the first part of the interview. I don't care about the title so much. If a film is directed by Spielberg, I'm watching it. If the album is Prince, I'm listening. If the Book is written by Elmore Leonard, I'm reading it.

One of the charms of Charlie Rose is that he isn't a celebrity worshiper. He usually knows nothing about his guests. It's kind of fun to watch him say Bill Murray as Bill Merry.
Charlie Rose always interviewed on this show from the perspective of a viewer who knew nothing about the guest. Charlie interviewed Elmore several times before this, and even with multiple guests on, so I can affirmatively say Charlie was quite familiar with Elmore by the time this particular interview happened.
He’s very successful, has a lot of money, and he doesn’t need to do all that low level research. It makes sense when you’re successful. Plus it gives somebody a really cool job.
