ELO - Daybreaker (With Chords).. by me.

Here I perform a track from ELO's vintage era, their album 'On The Third Day' of 1973, ish. Unlike my previous videos where the sequence was programmed some years ago for ELO tribute 'Wishful Thinking' (long before You Tube) this has been progammed especially for the You Tube audience.
The keyboards in the shot are (top down); just in shot top, right, Korg MicroKorg vocoder which isn't actually used in this piece (but came in very handy on my next piece 'Prologue/Twilight' from Time), Korg DW8000 used for the main triplets riff (with a sequenced harpsichord underneath), Korg M1 (more synths, strings, guitar sounds), then the mighty Roland RD300 for the piano parts. On the left there is a Roland DR660 drum machine (not used - needs a good dusting too) sitting atop a Korg 05R/W which does most of the drums, strings and bass guitar.
Once again I've used Windows Movie Maker to make this video (which I am rapidly outgrowing, great for beginers but lacks polish), but in answer to some critisism I have limited the angles and gone for a pretty much contigeous performance (I nearly cock it up at 2:16!), with just one angle change near the end as the cross-arms coda could not be seen on angle 1. But each angle uses its own audio, and you'll hear the glitches (slight volume dips) I was trying to erradicate in previous videos.
I hope you enjoy my rendition of one of Jeff Lynne's early works from when ELO was more prog than rock.
Comments.
As usual you are all welcome to leave comments and/or video responses - even honest criticism is welcome and shall be published. But if you are simply going to leave a spiteful comment cos I don't like Leon Jackson then don't waste your time.

I was recently watching the live 1973 video of ELO playing this song. Richard used a single Minimoog to produce the French Horn and the Saw Lead. Since synths didn't have presets until the late 70's, many performers would have 2 or 3 Minimoogs on stage and have each configured for a different sound. With a single Minimoog, one would have to take the time to dial up a new sound and there are about 30 knobs and switches on a Minimoog. To change from this song's French Horn sound to the sawtooth lead, one would 1 )raise the filter cutoff enough to soften the French Horn's sound, 2) lower the attack time of the filter envelope, and 3) lower the filter contour amount to further reduce unwanted effects of the envelope that were only needed for the French Horn sound. So at a minimum, one would tweak 3 different knobs to change from a French Horn to a sawtooth lead. However, Richard only had time for a single knob twist. Thus, Richard deduced that if he sufficiently opened the filter cufoff, he would soften the sound while simultaneously reducing the effect of the filter envelope and speeding up the attack. This is what he did live and he was able to go from a French Horn sound to a good enough sawtooth lead in the time it took him to twist a single knob! In the early days, Richard also kept a set of headphones handy during live shows so he could tune the Minimoog's oscillators periodically and change patches during the down time between songs. (In some songs, you can even see him constructing a new patch in the middle of the song, but this is rare because he is usually playing piano when he isn't playing the Minimoog). Back then, I bet he would have loved to have had presets! Unfortunately, by the time the Moog Source (a Minimoog-like synth with presets) came out, he had moved on to programmable polysynths.

Hey Paul, Kudos for a Great job on an Excellent song! I just worked it up myself. Nice songwriting and chord selection by Jeff Lynne. (One of Jeff L's super-powers was his ability to choose the right chords and he used a diversity of them.) I love the 2nd verse where the song switches from the part with all descending minor arpeggios to the part with all ascending major arpeggios! Nice trick. I also like how the arpeggios constantly alternate between (5th,3rd,Root) and (R,5th,3rd) inversions throughout.

A Maz Ing. It's easy to forget when listening to a finished album how much effort and talent went into the music, but seeing it happen on camera brings it right into focus. Bravo, PT!

Paul. Thanks for this - I'm whipping up a violin bit to layer on top of this for an interesting kind of show - 45 + 1 - every musician selects an instrumental 45 for the DJ to spin and layers something on top of it. This will help me really crush it. I appreciate the chord progression.

Thanks. I do play be ear. But I do sometimes get it wrong. EG; at 1:19 the chord is specified as Cdim/G (which it should be) but I am actually playing a Cmin/G. Close but no carrot!

Cheers. The melody is all built round the chords displayed. If you read music the best thing to do would be to Google for the standard MIDI file then download it into a notation program which would show you the actual notes.

ive spent all afternoon trying to work out the arpegio?(your top keyboard) lead on electric guitar. thanks so much for all the chords. ive now got it nailed - just not quite smooth enough yet. theres a lot of hammer on/ pull offs and the notes are so far apart for the last couple. my hand is agony! space ship 1 by paul gilbert is very similar apart from going up instead of down. check out his vid with the orange space suit on. come on mr lynne - a uk tour please rok on malko
