ELO Showdown reaction.An early hit from the guys who were taking over from The Beatles.Lennon particularly liked this song and the band.He also defended the band against claims that they ripped offThe Beatles.Very nice of him.
Jeff Lynne was also named checked when revealing he feels the Showdown should have been a No 1 in America.

Yes, this was very early ELO. One of Lynne's challenges was figuring out how to make the strings prominent, and it took awhile for the ELO sound to gel. "Can't Get It Out of My Head" is probably the first finalized ELO-sound record. Thanks for playing the Lennon interviews.

Jeff Lynne produced the reunion tracks for The Beatles Anthology series: Free as a Bird and Real Love. Prior to that he produced George's Cloud Nine and was a Traveling Wilbury with George. Check out George's "When We Was Fab". It brings things full circle. Sort of "I Am the Walrus" filtered through ELO and back to The Beatles (Ringo is on it too).

Time was an amazing album. A concept album that should be listened to from the beginning. This was more of their sci-fi sound with time travel themes. For a more classic ELO sound with Beatles influence, Eldorado's "Mister Kingdom" is also fantastic. Please keep up the great work, Harri!

ELO song recommendations: the "A New World Record" is practically a greatest hits, it has so many great songs - listen to 'Do Ya' which is a remake of when they used to be The Move. 'Rockaria', 'So Fine', 'Shangri-La' are also on that album. 'Can't Get It Out of My Head' is a great ballad, 'Poker' is a rocker that gets overlooked, 'Don't Walk Away' is another balled from the "Xanadu" soundtrack, 'Ma-Ma-Ma Belle' is a rocker, same album as 'Showdown'.

The subject should have been who had the biggest influence on the Beatles and on ELO... All bands get some inspiration by others. What were the Beatles influenced by? Three great influences that shaped The Beatles' music include Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and The one and only King, Elvis Presley. While all three of these musicians impacted The Beatles strongly, Elvis' style, sound, and all-around charisma left a lasting impression on all four of the young, eager members. The Beatles were also influenced by Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, The Byrds, Ravi Shankar and Eric Clapton.

Lou Christy, "Lightning Striking Again. Listen to the two songs, and you'll see what John was talking about. I like how he doesn't Bad mouth ELO for using some of the melodies from these two great songs. Jeff Lynn was close to the Beatles, long before he formed ELO. I guess you're struggling to recognise what you're hearing because it's relatively early ELO - pre (most of) the big hits. Jeff's vocals were much more raw in the first 3 or 4 albums. He started to polish his production from Face the Music onwards especially. I personally love both styles but I can understand that the earlier material is perhaps less accessible. If you're after exploring the earlier Jeff then try the suite that forms side 1 of On The Third Day. If you want an absolute gem from the later Jeff, try the awesome album 'Time' from 1981 - pretty well anything from that album is worth a listen but it's best heard in its entirety. Why not react to the whole thing? :-) Keep 'em coming!

John also spoke positively of the Rutles (although he warned Neil Innes that "Get Up and Go" was maybe too close to "Get Back" and could bring down the wrath of the copyright owners). He also hung out with Michael Nesmith of the Monkees (you can see him in the video for "A Day in the Life"). John was refreshingly unjealous of his place in the firmament of music. . People are talking about Jeff's voice being unpolished on this but I think it fits the song perfectly. I like this song because it doesn't have any computerized voice (done by a vocoder I think?) on their later albums.

Early ELO track maybe, but certainly not early Lynne. In 73 he had been singing for both the Idle Race and the Move for five years and by no means was "new" or untrained. You can hear the mellow Lynne voice on many Idle Race songs, but also variations that are rougher or even "grating". The contrast can also be heard on the first two ELO albums. It's not trying to find a style of singing, but a very versatile voice being used expertly for deliberate variations by a master singer. I guess that's also the reason Harry sometimes hears similarities with each of the Beatles, wondering how in one song he sounds like Paul, then in another it's John, and then another where he sounds like George. I wonder if he might actually be a little underrated as a singer? "Better" is of course a subjective term. Personally, I love the way he uses his voice on On The Third Day, _so_ powerful. If it matters, OTTD was probably the second album of ELO I listened to, when I became a fan because of Time in 81. The albums are very different, but also very much connected.

A lot of songs are said to sound like the Beatles because lots of groups were trying to become famous like they had. These groups started with a Beatles vibe and then either found their own sound and became well known, or they didn't and they disappeared. It was a late 60s thing. I think that ELO admitted the Beatles influence via their explicitly mentioning the idea was to continue the Beatles approach on "I Am The Walrus" of merging of rock and classical instruments. I do hear the Marvin Gaye groove in this. This was the first song we heard from them in America, and kind of remembering that I thought that Jeff's voice sounded a bit like Lennon's. His voice sounds like this on the early ELO records. I think it might have somewhat to do with the recording equipment as their instrumentation also sounds a lot rawer. Anyway, the ELO sound you are familiar with really started with their "Face the Music" album, which had Evil Woman and Strange Magic as the hits. Any song you haven't yet done off of "A New World Record" would be my suggestion for a reaction as it their best album in my opinion.
@Cosmo-Kramer
@Cosmo-Kramer 3 года назад
First "original" song, to be precise. Their epic Roll Over Beethoven cover charted a year earlier. And not to quibble further, but I think the shift in sound and Jeff's voice began in Eldorado, one LP before Face The Music. Began, I say. For sure, the transition towards their signature sound continued further with Face The Music. Where I do agree with you, however, is that it's absurd for someone to rip them for sounding like The Beatles when the band said from the jump that was their mission. lol And to Jeff's credit, ELO created their own unique sound, really, with just some Beatles flavoring mixed in. As Lennon said in one of the radio clips in Harri's reaction, "They're carrying on from where we left off with Walrus, although, they're doing things we never did." So ELO forged its own unique identity--even if it took people some time to realize it.

@@Cosmo-Kramer I thought of Roll Over Beethoven, but it was such a minor hit and was a cover as you mentioned (in fact, I only heard it after Showdown, which nearly cracked the top 40, unlike ROB). I had originally typed Eldorado as the beginning of the Jeff Lynne's vocals as most people know them, but reconsidered as I personally think that while his vocals improved, he still sounds more like early ELO (e.g., Can't Get it Out of My Head). Face the Music is full-on late period Lynne vocals (e.g., Strange Magic). Just my opinion of course. Totally agree withe everything else you stated--thanks for the reply!

@@andyb7942 Yup, the band's evolution and Jeff's voice changing style was a process, so it's difficult to mark firm delineations between periods. But I don't like to use the word, "improving", when describing Jeff's voice. I can't believe he wasn't capable of sounding jut like he does on, "Strange Magic", four years earlier when the band debuted. @@Cosmo-Kramer thanks for suggesting this! Of course Jeff had perfect control of his voice, and knew exactly how he wanted it to sound for a song - he still does, of course. As for Jeff's admiration for the Beatles, I don't think it comes out more clearly than in these lines, from _Girl At The Window_ , from the 69 album The Idle Race, by Jeff's band of the same name: "John and Paul and Ringo and George Were playing lovely tunes From the window of her room By the light of the moon". Not his greatest lyrics, but a nice tune, and Jeff could sing gallons of alphabet soup and it would still sound good.

Very well said! Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco. Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post). ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music. He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others.

Yes, Showdown is all Jeff. And you are correct: he was still finding his direction with ELO. The song was released pre-1974 when ELO had a more raw and less polished pop sound you have reacted to thus far. At the time, a couple cellos and one violin were overdubbed to create a thick strings sound. In 1974, they permanently moved to utilizing a full traditional orchestra. In all fairness, this rawer sound was more “I Am The Walrus” in spirit, whereas the lusher sound to come is more “Let It Be”. For a cool direct comparison, consider next reacting to their first big American hit and still popular song that came from the following album, Eldorado, that saw the orchestra switch: “Eldorado Overture” and “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head”. They are linked together with Overture being a short intro. It’s the Jeff Lynne you’ve come to know and love, and yes, his vocal performance sounds like one specific Beatle.

Showdown is from 1973 and yes, it was an early stage of ELO as they released their 2nd & 3rd album entitled ELO2 and On The Third Day respectively that year. As much as I love Jeff Lynne's voice, this is definitely not my favourite vocal performance of his. I find his voice to be kind of too compressed here and too low in the mix. I actually prefer Showdown Take 1 which was released on EMI's Electric Light Orchestra: ELO 2 Double CD from 2003 as a bonus track 'cos Jeff's voice is more upfront here. Great quotes from John Lennon. I knew them before but hilarious how he puts all those critics (even the later ones) to shame at a very early stage of ELO: "are you nuts slagging off ELO round here? I'm nicking little things myself!" 😂 Chartwise Showdown went to #22 in the UK. Cheers from Germany

Less impressed with the song but incredibly impressed with Lennon's observations. He's spot on, WOW. it starts off as a direct take from Marvin's Grapevine and it has the feel of Lightening Strikes Again, which absolutely had what became the ELO cadence and pulse. And this is definitely Jeff singing. Saying all that I quite like most ELO music but they were never in the same league as The Beatles.

Musically ELO has better orchestrations than my Beatles. It took 4 Beatles and George Martin to accomplish what Jeff Lynne has done musically all by himself. Of course, by popularity and COMMERCIALLY, The Beatles are no 1 but musically Jeff Lynne rules. I am a huge Beatles fan but Jeff Lynne is better with Harmonies, Orchestration, as an incredible Producer, singer and songwriter. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!!! Please Tour in 2022!!!

@@fabfour7397 well you obviously believe that. As I said, I quite like some ELO songs but they have nowhere near the depth of the Beatles, or the Stones, or the Kinks, or the Who. They are a good band with some catchy tunes, though Lynne tends to 'over' produce. But each to their own. I have a friend who doesn't care for Beethoven. No issue but if he suggested that the Monkees are better and had a larger impact on music I'd have to chuckle at his subjective lack of discernment. I completely get if he just likes them more.

Just wait until you react to Shangri La- definite ode to the Beatles
@Cosmo-Kramer
@Cosmo-Kramer 3 года назад
Hi Amy, as you probably know, I have been paying Harri for ELO reactions, and he always gives priority to paid reactions. I've noticed you've requested ELO's hauntingly beautiful ballad, "Shangri-la", a few times, and I just wanted to let you know that it is on my list of songs I'll be submitting to him for paid reactions. So, the good news is, you're guaranteed to hear it. The less-than-good news is that I've placed the song near the bottom of my list. And the reason I've done that is because I want to give Harri a proper tour of the ELO catalog, but I don't want to have him react to all the hits and otherwise Tier-1 best songs of theirs up front, and then have him react to a string of Tier 2 ELO deep-cuts to finish out the tour (my list). I thought it would be a way cooler experience for him if I alternated Tier-1 and Tier-2 songs, because that way when he's getting towards the end of the list, there are still some killer Tier-1 songs left for him to react to. And I love, "Shangri-la", so much, that I positioned it there. So, are you cool with waiting? There will be lots of other great ELO songs he'll be reacting to in the meantime--and I promise, "Shangri-la", will be reacted to. Please let me know if you understand my approach, and your thoughts on the matter. Thanks! ~ Cosmo

@@amyk9175 Well, you'll be happy to know that most of those are on my list. Unfortunately, "Do Ya", was supposed to be reacted to last week, but it was blocked. So I'm gonna have to figure that one out somehow, because it is a must-listen, I'm sure you agree. And 10538 is one of those Tier-1 tracks I have saved up for the end, so that track and, "Shangri-la", are gonna be a while. "All Over The World", was already reacted to by, "Harri"--sadly he didn't use that great flashmob video. I'm not a "Time" fan, so those two tracks you mentioned are not on my list. But, the quickest ELO fix I can give is a song from the Concerto For A Rainy Day, not as the next reaction, but it will be the reaction right after that. I'll leave the title as a surprise for ya, but you already know it's not, "Mr. Blue Sky", as Harri has already reacted to that song. :) ps~There is another song from the Concerto that's on my list, but it's about two-thirds of the way down my list.
