I just wish this whole EV "market" was a naturally developing market, rather than forced by government and those powerful enough to "inject" the poisons of collectivism and regulation. All our government is doing is distorting, even destroying, free-market provided choices. Taxing their "disapproved" choices and subsidizing the "approved" choices. Remember that you’re only watching a curated subset of the greater whole, and only thinking of the good stuff you’ve found out of that. You can still find similarly quality content on TV but it is getting harder to cut through the dross to find the silver all the time.

On RU-vid I've enjoyed cooking shows, tech shows, history shows, gliders, stunts, action, fiction, drama, and comedy. My interests change almost daily as I discover new things that I never thought of before. On TV, I spent most of my time channel surfing. Most of it is designed for "shock value."

he is a real dude, a no BS man, and "small channels" like these are runt by "real" people, with real and tangible emotions, reactions, with legitimate curiosity and knowledge, and it is just that much more interesting to listen to it is great

Hats off to musk i this interview- he showed me a lot more depth and maturity than I had appreciated. But lets pump the brakes a bit, Tesla fan boys. There is more , much more , to running a successful business, than engineering intelligence and showmanship; like sobriety , maturity, and integrity are critical in a successful CEO of a company this size. Sandy was , actually pretty fawning tho I dont think he crossed the line . Sandy didnt really address the crazy fit and finish issues that he rants about in every podcast. But bottom line- Musk was very impressive here. Ford,GM Need to be very worried if he can grow, keep it together and focus. He has the vision and intelligence top actually make tesla dominant. Anyone shorting tesla after this interview is nuts.

@@amoneoudini1044 You'd be surprised. Especially in defense contracting, LoC is touted a lot. It's truly a meaningless metric, but a lot of managers (and some engineers) put a lot of value in it due to outdated beliefs.

Get so tired of dumb interviews with the same stupid questions "why do you want to go to mars?", and Elong seems bored during those interviews with the same responses over and over. This one and the everyday Astronaut interview seem to genuinely grab Elon's interest, and get more natural reaction out of him.

I think the only other CEO with the technical expertise and knowledge to understand his/her company's products at the micro level would be Dr. Lisa Su of AMD. It's no coincidence that AMD is killing it also.

Not just the car. The software, the neural net, the AI chip, the manufacturing processes, the material science related to the giga casting, the battery chemistry and manufacturing, the power management system, the solar tech, the energy storage installations, the autobidder AI and so much more. Edit: Forgot to mention rocket tech, satellite tech, HVAC systems, materials science, tunnels & tunneling tech, neural nets and neural implants and brain-machine interaction. Let me know if I am still missing some scientific/technological areas where this superhuman is an expert and/or is disrupting fields based on them.

Yes he is very involved in almost every aspect of the company. It is mind boggling to me that this is not the norm. No wonder so many companies utterly fail to adapt or change. They lack knowledge and or vision from a leader, not a boss.

It is jaw dropping the amount of detail that he can answer to any random interview question about every aspect of not only Tesla and Spacex....but also Neuralink and Boring. We all have worked for and seen CEOs whose entire plan is to lock themselves up in their office to appear busy but, in fact, are merely hiding from accountability. I think most of us get it, this dude Elon knows his shitt and always pushes to reach the goals he calculates in his mind..and is honest and open during the entire process.

@@whatislove127 yes, it does not shine during night or overcast (most of the urban land in the northern hemisphere has a small number of sunny days), the panels even in this day and age have a measly efficiency, production costs still very high, batteries are super costly and heavy, very problematic and expensive recycling, density is not likely to improve anytime soon (simple problem of physics and chemistry). The only thing that would make EVs possibly closer to mass adoption are refillable liquid batteries, but it's still to soon to bet on them. See I know alot about power generation or distribution and there is to date no viable technology. EVs are going to be rich people's (or ones who want to go into debt) play thing unless some massive change happens in decentralized power production and storage.

Elon Musk is not an engineer. In fact, he doesn't have a graduate degree in any scientific field. He has a BS in physics and a MA in Economics. He, of course, has an honorary PhD in B*!! S%$t. No surprise since he got his Economics degree from Wharton the same university that the Orange Menace got his "Real Estate" degree in 68 with a major in "redlining", I assume

I didn't catch one of the words in that statement when Elon said it. I suspect it pertains to the system that develops the software. (Remember, they don't write the AP software. They write a system that writes the software. I think that was said at the last Autonomy day (don't quite remember))

As a software engineer I concur, the line you don't have to maintain is the best, practices such as DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) is super important.

I have to agree. As a software engineer, I've constantly seen junior engineers overcomplicate with their solutions. A bit of time spent to understand the whole picture, often leads to a simple but elegant solution that is both small, easy to read, and effective. I can't tell you how many times I've had code reviews, and they look at my code and say, but what about? Oh.. But what about? Oh... The best solution is usually the simplest one. Fewer lines of code usually means fewer failure points to troubleshoot. Obviously, coding is not a vacuum, so real world applies.

In software and hardware engineering, optimization is crucial.

It's so exciting to live in an age where two engineers can get together, have an interesting conversation and have it broadcast to everyone around the world. Before the age of the internet the only things you'd hear from around the world would be greatly curated journalist interviews. Which as we've seen usually isn't nearly as interesting with someone like Tesla, as engineer-to-engineer communication.

Well, its kinda different.. Elon knows that Sandy knows his stuff.. and has been around for a long time and has seen it all.. and its really no different than him talking to one of his own enginners... He knows sandy won't really talk about as much anything thats corporate, earnings... etcs.. he only cares about automotive design... it usually brings out the inner scientist/enginner from within.

I like how they can disagree and noone threatens to kill the other. Some politicians of late should try that.

There were a bunch of Tesla fanboys up in arms when Sandy critiqued the car initially then they loved him once he gave positive reviews on later models. Elon openly admitted there with issues with the older cars and that there are still issues with the new car. They fix some. Others are harder to fix because they require taking down entire assembly lines. Unlike the other OEMS, he recognizes the issues and knows they need to be address eventually. The OEMS ignore the issues as long as the cars keeps selling until they get to a point where a competitor has a clearly superior product and they won't be able to do anything about it for several years.

Exactly! For example, even though Sandy admitted he doesn't fully understand how the machine learning works, he still managed to get interesting information on that topic from Elon. Sandy isn't afraid to show that there are topics he knows less about and that is precious. That fear of showing a lack of knowledge by the interviewer has killed so many interviews taken with Elon. And the lack of knowledge is then apparently visible anyway. In nearly no interviews with Elon do the interviewers actually carry on with the argument. It is so annoying when they just move on to the next question, when they do not understand the topic. The last interview on clubhouse was excruciating to listen to. Wouldn't you agree?

As a programmer for a quarter of a century, this is exactly right. I commented on this above. Less code is better. Sandy clearly had the idea that more lines must mean better software, but this is not true in the least.

@@jamieorc I think Sandy was alluding to the complexity rather than actual lines of code. He sees engineering in the same way, you can hear him talk about it in this interview, less parts is better. And of course the complexity is enormous, but rather than borne by the written logic it's a function of the machine learning and data. If you had to count machine learning inflection points as lines of code it would be indescribably enormous.

Imo its sad public figures today often feel pressured to add the part "and I thought your criticisms were accurate" - even when they disagree. So instead, Id rather see the "I hear you" part being uttered sincerely, and the response directed to the actual question (you know, not the way politicians answer difficult questions :) ). But there is no sequitur that you need to say the criticisms were accurate when you dont think they were. A lot of criticisms are not, or they contain half-truths, misunderstandings, sometimes even malicious contortions of facts. So just as an appeasement PR strategy to agree with the criticisms journalists come up with only to satisfy their ego and prevent some kiddo (referring to the maturity of mind, not biological age) shitstorm on social media is really a bad development.

What matter is where you want to go... when you have disagreement, or dispute, the important is not to be the right one but it's to look to the situation and look ahead of how to do it better.
