Usefulness = Improvement (utility delta) x Impact (Amount of people it will affect) Either the improvement or impact has to be significantly high for it to be considered more useful than the current state of art
Δutility = future state of the art -times- - current state of the art -times- Δutility * amount of people it would affect = impact the higher the impact, the more you should go for it
There will be some survivorship bias because you can never make it as big and gain as much momentum as someone like Elon with SpaceX if you don't take massive risks and bet it all on your vision. It's not a safe investment, but it can pay off massively. I guess the lesson if to believe in yourself if you want to make a difference and change anything at all.
I think the real trick is deciphering what you were designed for and what you were not, an essence if you will, if such a thing exists that is. So much freedom and choice can be overwhelming in finding a purpose; animals are fortunate in that sense, no doubts in their world.
Honestly, I think if we had better opportunities in school to find our passions instead of focusing solely on the standard core and have more hands on experience in high school to substitute an internship we could have a more productive, stable, and happier society. But instead we keep everything standardized yet unequal in our schools.

Maybe parents should ideally play a larger role with their children's direction, in terms of their interests in particular fields. It looked to be what Musk was doing with his, privately. Renee Liu I would hesitate to make such rash decisions. A lot of legitimate learning can be done in university and a lot of knowledge can be acquired during the process of getting a PhD. The most important thing to ask is if this is something YOU want to do.
@@zain4019 a more important thing to ask is if you can acquire the same knowledge more quickly and cheaply without spending the time doing the PhD. If you are trying to get a job as a researcher then the PhD is probably useful, but if you are trying to create real world results, then being able to achieve results is more useful.
I always thought utilitarianism (which I assume is the ethical framework for 'usefulness' Elon is using here) used sigma for its symbol, and not delta, maybe that's what Elon meant but he mixed his Greek symbols up?
