1: Shower - Dress confidently even if you don't have to 2 Set example for others - set the bar on how hard you want others to work 3: Strech Goal - Aim for a higher goal 4: Develop wide knowledge base - Develop specific knowledge but also try to learn more broad things to help you 5: Always asume you could improve
*I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re constantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better* such a great quote
This is financial advice and I never give financial advice: DONT LEAVE DURING THE BEAR. If you don’t want to invest…learn. If you don’t want to learn…build. If you don’t want to build observe. DO SOMETHING…other than leave. There is so much opportunity here. Take advantage!
The first point is soooooooooo accurate when I go to school I dress up and do work and come home feeling great but when I have my off days I don't shower or put anything on and as the day progresses I feel like shit
If you win the morning, you win the day. That’s my best solution for increased productivity. It’s so crucial to start the day off doing something productive cause it’ll fire off a chain reaction.
Bonus lessons! This video was already long enough with 5 lessons, but I originally identified 9 when I was researching the topic. Here's a brief look at the other four: 1. When you hit a roadblock, don't accept the standard solution. Within the aerospace industry, SpaceX has historically been seen as a bunch of "cowboys" for the seemingly haphazard way they approach everything from testing to launches. But this cowboy mentality can work to their advantage. SpaceX engineers are well known for loading new code onto their rockets during launch prep when bugs are found. Other companies would often delay launches by weeks when similar problems cropped up. 2. Make sure you have skin in the game. Part of Elon’s work ethic stems from the fact that he’s personally invested in his projects. While other companies are content to take investor money, Musk’s companies - while also investor and government-backed - got off the ground because Musk himself put his own fortune on the line in order to make them possible. By being personally invested in his companies, Musk knew that their failure would also mean his own financial failure - while he certainly wouldn’t be out on the street, it would at least represent a huge, huge loss. This level of personal commitment evokes the "back against the wall" strategy, which stems from the many historical examples which prove that human beings are much more driven, creative, and productive when they feel that they’re up against a wall; that there’s no way out but to fight through. 3. Work towards something you believe in. The majority of Musk’s work ethic is generated by his conviction that humans need to reach Mars, and to eventually become a multi-planetary society. This huge, audacious goal is what drives Musk - and while many will say it’s impossible, or that it at least won’t happen in Musk’s lifetime, this goal has driven him and the teams at his companies to achieve other things that people thought impossible as well. 4. Break your schedule into small chunks. Musk uses a technique called time-boxing in order to break his day into 5-minute chunks. This allows him to fit in all the responsibilities that come along with running two companies, but time-boxing is a strategy that also creates some pressure - and as you probably know from the last time you procrastinated on an English paper, only to write the whole thing in one glorious, Red Bull-fueled all-nighter, time pressure is a motivating factor.
1. shower - get ready! 2. set the example- more time on task than anyone else 3. be ambitious and set stretch goals 4. ask questions! and learn as much as possible about everything (yet attain mastery in one area atleast) 5. how can you be more effective?
All motivation , success , miracle daily routine , meditation, silence, affirmation, visualization all are just imaginary world. These are traps. If you want to really great in life , work like Elon musk 100 hour per week honestly. You will famous One day. Motivation-These are temporary, The most powerful secret in success is believe in yourself . You are great. You have all potential inside use it . Take risk. Desire is most powerful in this. What you really want to achieve. Stop watching motivational videos. Do work like Elon Musk. 100 hour per week.
Within 1:30 min I totally agree with Elon Musk im showering.Literally, when I was in highschool,I showered every morning regardless of people telling my hair would get dry or whatever. I also showered bc I played sports and sometimes would shower 2x a day but still... showering in the morning just made me feel more rejuvinated even when only sleeping like 3 hours of sleep. When I woke up too late to shower,I would just feel so out of it. A shower changed how I felt the whole day. Never underestimate a good, relaxing shower.
1dforeverrlr some people obviously Thrive off of it. Others would feel extremely constraint there's no one-size-fits-all that's why people are free to work for Tesla or to other stuff
I've been reading Elon Musk's biography and I must say... That dude does some incredible things! He's motivating me a lot while I'm going through my college classes.
Man, I gotta say... This video came at a perfect time for me. The last few months I've been stagnant in my business and life in general. I've been playing tons of video games and not pushing myself like I used to. I randomly saw your video pop up, watched it, and realized all the things I knew but wasn't implementing. I love your channel, Thomas! It's really awesome. You're an inspiration to a lot of people, myself including! Keep up the hard work, man.
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done. The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. In life, people tend to wait for good things to come to them. And by waiting, they miss out. Hi guys!! Let me just share a quick story with you guys. :) We own a cookie shop business in our college town. When we first started it, we were living in our car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. We just graduated college as well. We started the late night cookie shop out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night. We were living in our car in the parking lot of the shop at the time with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And now we have 2 storefront locations in New Jersey and Florida! We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams.
Sounds a lot like like Ceaser. Walks with his legions, makes an example by fighting at the front lines, always at the center of all attention, takes himself seriously, takes on seemingly unachievable battles, wide knowledge base of diplomacy and military service, questioning experts and he questioned himself as well. I just read Con Igguldens books on him tho... Mby a little romanticised.
Thomas, have you considered making a video focusing on performance anxiety? I often find that procrastination and unproductivity can be linked to this and not to problems with motivation etc.
I've been reading a biography on Steve Jobs and the part about setting unrealistic goals that fall short but still get the most out of employees is exactly the sort of thing Steve Jobs did
The most important lesson one gets from musk and any other guy who achieved something in his life is STOP TAKING LESSONS FROM OTHER PEOPLE AND WATCH MOTIVATIONAL SHIT AND GO OUT AND ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING. Success is not a science it is the will to persevere and succeed.
I actually apply the "growth mindset" for everything in my life, from how to improve my study to how to do dishes or shower in a more efficient way. I just can't help but think about how I can do better. Ps.: Elon is the most awesome guy ever!
I'm currently reading Power of Habits, and Musk's answer about showering sounds like a "key stone habit." A small habit that links to a lot of your other habits.
Dkjr119 I think you can really extrapolate this to morning routines. I know a lot of times the rest of my day can be chaotic and very greatly Dave Idaho if I have a slice of morning that keep consistent as much as I can did not really helps enhance the flow
1. Take care of your appearance 2. Be an example 3. Stretch goals beyond your capabilities 4. T-knowledge base, expert and broad knowledge in many areas 5. Growth mindset
I thought you would mention first principles thinking, since that is a big part of Elon's work ethic. Could you maybe approach that topic in another video? Loved this video anyway!
Very inspiring! I'm a medical student, who wrote a fantasy novel and trying to make a website to market it. The people around me told me to only focus on one thing. Yeah, of course medicine will always be my number one priority in terms of learning, but it's not wrong to learn things beyond your specialty, given that you're able to manage your time.
showering is a really good time to reflect, and creative ideas happening when one relaxes. It refreshes your mind and you can operate better after a long day of work.
Hi @Thomas Frank. I would like to see you talk about "How to be productive after lunch" in a video. What one is supposed to/not to do after lunch? Should I drink coffee or take a nap or something else? Your videos have been very useful in my life. Thanks!!
Such a great video, Tom. Highly recommended to watch! I actually practice most of what you preached without really reflecting on it. I like the whole 'T-shaped' skillset that you mentioned, I am definitely striving to be that person and I won't stop!
I wish I discovered your channel when you first started uploaded videos. I've watched many of your videos to remind myself that anything can be accomplished if I work smart, hard, and commit to it. Thank you for being so awesome! And I love your podcast as well :3
I've been seeking this vague feeling of what kind of person I want to be. I knew what it was by heart but I couldn't put a name on it, and now I can. Elon Musk. Thomas, thanks for taking the time & resources to create this video about Elon Musk. I appreciate it!
The author wrote that book saying he'd publish it with or without Elon's approval ahahahaha he eventually got Elon to sit to dinner with him a couple of times to verify some stuff about the book. It's REALLY GOOD I'm surprised Thomas didn't take much from the earlier chapters of Elon's time with Paypal and X.com where you can read about the full extent of his work ethic.
6:55 Musk knowledge is square shaped: he has in-depth knowledge of everything. Climate change, AI, car stuff, space stuff, boring stuff... the list goes on
Improving yourself is important, but so is your family and work-life balance. You can only do so much with the knowledge that you're pushing yourself to the limits. Push yourself but enjoy life too. Got to find that perfect balance.
I feel he's just more open about what he's working on then most companies. billionaires are private which creates the illusion he gets a lot more done than others. Germans tend to be secretive and released things when they're absolutely perfect, when Americans make a show of something in development.
I shower to get away from everyone and think. Showers are an amazing place to do math, strategize, reflect, and re-center. Oh, and you come out cleaner if that matters to you lol.
I spend my most of day wasting time on internet. At night I watch your videos on youtube and it fill me with enthusiasm to do something but at morning struggle with myself continues. Your videos helped me a lot. Thank you so much for making them.
Have you ever heard of Olin Collegeof Engineering? I’m a student there. It’s an awesome, young engineering school that’s big on the growth mindset concept that you brought up. We’re all engineers, but we also have to dabble in design, entrepreneurship, science, and the humanities if we want to graduate.
Great video! Well articulated... Articulated so well that if that if someone stated much of what you said verbatim in a job interview, they’d either land that job (with minimum contemplation on the part of the hiring manager) or be rejected in fear of said person surpassing the hiring manager.
I joined skill share with one of your links, a 'master post' on your recommended courses would be super appreciated. I am chronically ill and while I am too sick for formal education atm, I still want to learn and grow and I'm sure others who follow would enjoy seeing courses from people you love. Sorry if this has been asked before, love your channel!
I have one question that I can't get out of my head since I finished Elon Musks biography: How can you stand 80 hours of work every week, without getting burned out?
Klappadu you wont burn out if you work on something you really love and has big meaning to you. Let me give you the hypothetical question: lets say from now on until the end of your life you would get 10.000 a month to live. What would you do then? Elon had that and he chose to start a company.
Just ran into this while sitting bored af because of my thesis. And when i a see man who quizes engineering just to learn something, well that's a motivation. I occasionally open your videos when i don't want to study anymore, thank you Thomas!
In the video, you said that Elon Musk is never satisfied with the outcome of his projects, whether they're successful or not. What mindset do you think he's adopted to use this to his advantage and motivate himself, rather than feeling defeated by it?
Could you do a similar video for Gabe Newell or Valve, and their weird hierarchy and work culture? It seems almost opposite of the one described at Tesla or from Elon Musk, and it would be interesting for a compare/contrast follow-up video.
Hey dude... found you when I was searching yt for productivity. Really enjoyed this breakdown... Building a prototype, vids like this help me get through long coding sessions. Cheers.
All of these are really good practices for anyone, regardless of being the CEO of Tesla/SpaceX or not. From desk clerk to CEO, anyone can benefit from a healthy outlook on work and by doing so, have more fun at your job, feel a sense of accomplishment and hopefully rise up the corporate ladder eventually.
A famous writer, lecturing (while drunk) some aspiring writers, asked them "Do you want to be a writer?". When they said "Yes", he said: "Well, then, how come you're not writing?" Thomas Frank's advice here might have credibility as tips for those who want to create positive thinking videos. Perfectly good advice. If your pursuit of your interests (financial and otherwise) leads naturally to you to starting a business, do so. Watching Musk himself is for me as motivational as anything I've experienced.
These 5 tips remind me of things my husband would say. And the expansion of knowledge is something I've experienced. My college major was English with plans to teach, then my parents needed me so I took a break from school to work for them. After meeting and marrying my husband, computers entered our lives which allowed me to begin writing newsletters. Enter the World Wide Web. I had returned to school to update my skills, which included adding website design to my list. Today I am a professional website designer with the focus to help small businesses and organizations be successful. I would not have these additional skills without my husband's support. Don't EVER think that you've made a mistake with your college major or trade school decisions. Something will always be the right choice.
I REALLY like this video. Your effort is appreciated. I'm thrilled for more videos reviewing dreamers. I feel better about myself simply by having watched this video. Thank you!!!!
thats why i started working out to be more comfortable in my skin and more confident. The gym has taught me discipline and i am implementing this in other aspect in life
