I love that you take the shame off the victim and put it where it belongs: on the abuser! We’ve all had a “problematic fave” at some point in our lives. It’s pretty much impossible to avoid, unless you never admire anyone. People are people.

I think a lot of younger people just weren’t old enough to remember the initial positive press around Elon when Tesla first started blowing up. The general tone was very much that he was a pioneer of sustainable technology who planned to make electric cars and battery power accessible to everyone. If you weren’t super invested in researching him, the press at this time was overwhelmingly positive. For most people it wasn’t until the cave submarine incident that the wheels started to come off.
YES!! that is exactly how he used to be presented. i knew him as the guy who was doing cool things with spaceX, where my friend enjoyed working. and i knew him as a guy who was making electric cars a big deal. he seemed cool. and you're spot on -- it was the cave submarine controversy when i was like "woah wtf is he doing?!?!?" and then from there he continued to double down on his awful behavior, and now i have less than 0 respect left.
Yea, when he put the battery in the South Australian power grid I thought he seemed like a rare, decent rich man. It wasn't until a few years after that I realised that he was actually just a grifter and other batteries were the same quality but cheaper.
@@johannageisel5390 100% There is no ethical way to obtain that much money, and certainly nothing ethical about hoarding more wealth than you could ever reasonably spend.
Givenn that one of the first things that he did at Twitter was to fire the janitorial staff, I wouldn't want to live in any garbage town that he founds.
It's worth noting that company towns led to violent uprisings by unions. Actual violent, armed uprisings because it was the only way the workers could escape from the horrific conditions of the bosses. Pullman and Blair Mountain were the largest, with the former spreading from the town of Pullman, IL. across the entire northeast, and the latter being an actual modern battle with snipers and machine guns on both sides, and the bosses brought in a plane to bomb the workers with poison gas. This will not end well, especially since Musk already despises unions
I think we should be applauding people for going “oh no I realized this person I liked was shitty and am now acknowledging that” instead of shaming them for fake internet victory points. The more people that get on board hating grifters, the better, full stop.
I don't think there's anything wrong/shameful about falling for a grifter that you might barely follow closely online until they become a problem. The only reason I identified him as a grifter early was that I have a super niche set of skills that made me think he was a moron back in like 2013 because he tried talking about my field and sounded like he was an elementary school student. Like how all the comp-science people right now are dumbfounded hearing him talk about technology.
He talked a good game, he fooled a lot of people and still has plenty fooled. He has good a great PR firm because a lot of people still think he founded Tesla & it seems like his followers don’t know much about the billions in government subsidies he’s acquired over the years or the foreign funding he received purchase Twitter. I noticed he was a grifter when he first started claiming his teslas were self driving, but at that time, google (I’m pretty sure it was google) had to scrap their self driving cars because of the accidents it caused. Too many are still under the impression that teslas can truly self drive, when really it’s just glorified cruise control.
The idea that someone can criticize you for having an opinion about X, then learning more about X, which ultimately led to a change of opinion regarding X, is absolutely mind-boggling. That's what humans are, like, supposed to do... Way to go on being an awesome person, Savy!
They’re just stroking their own egos for supposedly seeing through Elon 5 years ago when he wasn’t constantly publicly making a fool of himself and it wasn’t popular to criticize him
Yeah, that’s definitely weird. We’re supposed to be able to change opinions upon learning all of the facts. I wouldn’t knock a person for falling for a scammer before knowing all of the facts.
hahaha well thank you. i get it, sometimes i too can be like "ohhhh i knew this thing was bad all along!!!" but not everyone learns the same things at the same time, and it's good to just keep getting the word out
It was Roy Disney (Walt's brother) who nixed the original Epcot project, letting it die with his younger brother, but Disney did make Celebration, Florida nearby. They're also planning on making other master-planned communities which was announced about a year ago. Also being in control of an employee's residence is one of the red flags to look out for when it comes to human trafficking because of the extremely high level of control over almost everything it gives you.
yes i completely agree re: the red flags! even though i'm not a big disney fan, i really enjoy learning about walt vs roy's different visions for the company from the defunctland channel. walt disney scares me tbh
If I were building a factory, I'd want it near existing freight infrastructure like railways or navigable waterways as part of an existing town and build low cost housing for (unionised) workers near the factory so that workers don't need a car.
We had company towns here in the Philippines since the 60’s. The nearest one from me was owned by a sugar company, and they had housing, hospitals, schools, churches, pools, etc. It’s a ghost town now. The company has been closed for decades and their land was recently sold to another company. They are violently displacing the ex-employees who still live there.
It's so disappointing to see that people can't understand that people can like something someone did without obsessively knowing everything about the person. Yes, he is an awful person but we didn't have the same access to information (and many of us still don't) than is common today. This says more about our society's need to victim blame people who fell for a scam instead of the scammer than it does about your due diligence 5-10 years ago. I used to like Dr. Phil and Tyra because I learned a lot of empathy from those shows (even if the shows and people were problematic).
The reason why the information is relevant is equivalent to a character witness and maybe the individual is supporting something and by supporting the individual it might be considered enough to stop supporting the individual. *It should be everyone’s personal decision* if you want to support an individual that you found out is unethical.
Apart from the fact that, even If you have that Access to information, expecting people to Invest all that time and resources into looking into someone who says sth they Like online is... Just plain unrealistic. I have never been interested in the Personal lives of people who's music i Like. And that has Led to me liking some people who later turned Out to be horrible. Could i have prevented that If i Had stalked them online for several years? Maybe. Do i have the time to do that for every single Person im aware Of? No. I dont. I have a life i need to live. So yh, when i find out that people do sth i cant personally Support, i will step away from them, but i dont expect people to have the same information that i do. And im Not judging them for it, since in Most cases, it is Not a realistic expectations.
YES!!! as a teen i was a huge dr phil AND tyra fan! i had no idea about all their MLM connections or about dr phil's extremely unethical exploitation of his guests
As some one who has never participated in celebrity (due to circumstances and a minor disability) worship I just want to say that it's not cool to pretend to be superior to people who do. It's completely human and us as humans aren't as good at character assessment as we want to believe. Not to mention it's counterproductive to shame people for nor knowing or changing their minds. Being factually correct is only a part of being actually correct. Hang in there. you're doing great.
I when to a Montessori type school in primary school. The transition to high school was extremely easy since I was already used to switching classrooms for each class and dealing with long term team and solo projects.
i don't think you should feel bad about once having been a fan. i have people i used to actively listen to and seek out that i would never confess to watching now, cause i know the reaction i would get. something that seems to get forgotten into today's new version of purity culture is that we all have to learn. some of us are born in an environment to learn from a young age, some of us are brought up in environments that fuck our heads up and it takes a lot of unpacking to get to where we "SHOULD" be.
i think purity culture is a good comparison. i think purity culture is ingrained in a lot of us, and even after we leave a church or religious community, the same type of behavior and rhetoric is still present on social media, just applied to new situations
Gives me "The Firm" vibes: "The firm encourages children." Oh, and, Savy, you will never disappoint me. (I may not be your mom, but I'm old enough to be!)
Love seeing someone I respect as much as I respect Savy being able to change their mind and be honest about it. I would say Elon has always been like this. Love you Savy. Your honesty about this makes me respect you even more than I did before. Epcot was a planned community. It's nothing like a corporate town. And Disney's plan for Epcot kind of exists. Just search for Celebration, Florida. It's a real town close to WDW.
thanks so much -- i appreciate that. i think elon probably has always been like this, but he's definitely publicizing his true colors now more than ever. or maybe it's another part he's playing - trying to get the edgy fanbase of people who think bullying is cool. idk, but either way, he's a nasty person who doesn't deserve his success
Interesting I think this might already be in the works. My grandparents live in Georgetown (suburbs of Austin) and a couple months ago I flew into Austin and drove pass the TESLA facility. I was amazed at how large it was plus right next to the facility is indeed already new apartment complexes. On the opposite side of the street they are building what looks like maybe more apartments and office spaces. What’s also weird is Facebook is also building something in Temple, Texas. I remember thinking why are all these Silicon Valley companies migrating to central Texas?
@@maryeckel9682 that was my original thought with inflation and legislation changes a lot of businesses have been moving to the South. But Tesla and Facebook have both secured large plots of land.
I remember before Elon took over twitter and I announced that I was no longer a fan of Elon Musk as the stuff he was doing was abhorrent and ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ONE of the leftists who followed me for my activism UNFOLLOWED ME. It was really jarring cuz I was expecting to get backlash from the right. But I guess ever being a fan of Elon Musk is a bigger crime? Bruh, I'm still confused. But I won't stop calling out the man regardless of what it does to my own following because stopping this stuff is more important than anyone's opinion. This is the kind of man who would think Esau scrip is a cool idea.
i got my first inkling that musk was WAY less smart than he thinks he is when i encountered the hyperloop. that thing is beyond stupid. and each new 'innovation' or 'revolutionary idea' he proposed hammered that home. much of it can be summed up 'oh, did he invent busses again?' and then there is the build quality of the cars. and the buggy software...
Your last video made it seem like you were a fan of Elon til just now 2023ish. I'm glad you gave more perspective and also gave the perspective of the people taken in by the grift and having to say "welcome to the club" instead of "you should of known sooner."
It’s incredibly disappointing to me that ppl in this community were so quick to jump down your throat for being a fan of Elon in the PAST, and openly admitting very honestly that you were wrong and don’t feel that way anymore. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I genuinely get sick of seeing ppl so ready to drop content creators they like for not being 100% on board with their own opinions at all times. It’s counterproductive, and leaves absolutely no room for growth. And of course im not trying to hate on ppl who criticized you, but yeah, im just very disappointed that ppl wouldn’t have better faith in you when you’ve shown consistently that you do not like Elon Musk. And if anyone who left a comment like that is reading, this isn’t meant to attack anyone. But I’d absolutely consider giving people more room to make mistakes, if I were them.

We were also younger with less access to info. People learn shit as they gain life experience, and life is a lot more connected to media than it used to be. (i also fell for elon and "dr" phil's bs)
yup!! in high school i was SO CONVINCED that dr phil was a real doctor! i was like "he has a phd in psychology! he used to have his own practice!!!" i would ignore that he never renewed his license and hadn't practiced psychology in decades.
I have side step many a con, but not all of them. The reason I've avoided so many cons is that they were not targeted at me, not because I have some innate wisdom or super human perception. I may have stopped being a Musk fan in 2018, but I was one before that. So the "Musk con" did work on me for some time. The thing people need to remember is that there's always a con out there for you. Company towns... That's not something I thought we'd be seeing again. The Grapes of Wrath is not an instruction manual...
yup, i'd say around 2018 was also when i stopped liking elon musk - it was whenever that cave submarine thing happened. i did give him another chance but he quickly blew it, i forget on what this time
Ok, so for me, I think there are two ways to look at this. We have a major housing crisis, where it is nearly impossible to find affordable housing. I can see how CEOs of massive companies might think that it’s better to build affordable employee housing vs paying them a higher wage. I grew up in a ski town and employee housing was very common (plus there were always the BEST parties at the Heavenly housing, but that’s a side note). But this is just crazy. You don’t need a whole ass town. And he lost me when he called it a Utopia. Oh and I was also out when you said it was Elon Musk. No way that’s not going to be just awful. This whole thing makes me feel icky.
i get where you're coming from. i can also understand why employees would want to live there, especially when rent prices are advertised as well below the average for the region. but letting an employer control employee housing can turn culty REALLY quick -- people shouldn't feel pressured to combine their work life and personal life. i can see how the ski town does sound fun though!! :)
@@SAVYWRITESBOOKS oh yeah, I guess my comment didn’t quite make sense. I think it’s MUCH better to have the actual housing issues addressed rather than expect companies to build housing. I also think it’s better for companies to pay their employees more rather than make MORE money off them by having them live in employee housing. With the example I gave about the ski resorts, it was the best solution because most of the employees were seasonal, and many would come from other countries and work for the winter, then return back home. For them, having the resort also provide housing was the best option. I don’t at all see how what Elon Musk is doing is a good idea AT ALL.
6:35 Don't feel stupid. Feel ANGRY You were lied to. It's not your fault that you were scammed. There's a very obvious person you can blame for screwing you over, and getting mad at them might lead to a solution
Like you, I gave Musk the benefit of the doubt until he clearly didn't deserve it. I wouldn't call myself a fan by any means, but I thought that his devotion to innovation and electric cars were a net positive. To me, this is fine. We aren't all going to research every aspect of a human being before we form a base opinion of them. We should be open to new information, and to changing our views on people and the world as data becomes available. That's exactly what you're doing.
You deserve a full blown high five, you changed your view publicly and admitted that things may not have been as you thought, if ppl have a problem with that that's insane. I love admitting I'm wrong or changed, it shows I'm growing and won't hang on to bad ideas to save face.
It really disappointing seeing people shaming others for such reason. He didn’t reveal himself to be an evil cult leader in the past, just because some could see his shady side doesn’t mean everybody could, have some empathy.
Good to hear that there are more people in the world who can say, "Hey, I was wrong, I feel stupid, but I know better", instead of doubling down and complaining about "being canceled" or others being "woke" or some other narcissistic nonsense, then flying to a usually right-wing audience for validation. Watching political commentators on that pipeline can be annoying.
One thing that I think is worth discussing is the privilege usually involved in previously being a fan of these kinds of people and overlooking/not noticing problematic things about them. A lot of times when people didn't realize someone like Elon is problematic until recently, it's because they didn't recognize the problematic dogwhistles he has always used. And they didn't recognize it because they're not in one of the groups it harms. For example, he has been saying grossly ableist things about work ethic as long as he's been famous. Most people just didn't notice/care about that kind of ableism until recently. But as someone those comments are normally directed towards, as someone who's had those comments used against me, I could see them for what they were because of the ableism I'd personally experienced. Someone who hasn't experienced much ableism probably wouldn't have. The ignorance isn't necessarily the person's fault or a justifiable source of "disappointment," but I think it's worth examining the privilege of ignorance.
Becoming a super villain? I’ve said for years he’s a James Bond villain 😅 Though it wasn’t his attitudes or how he acted- it was literally just …. I dunno something about it just made me think he had a volcano lair. I don’t think anyone who was a fan is dumb- my husband used to think he was cool.
Hannah (of Hannah and Jake) was the first person I remember who poked holes in the mask of Elon. It was a running joke that she hated him and people would regularly send her Elon things just to see her reaction to them. Even though, at the time, I didn't see why she hated him so much, seeing someone I respect so much hating this man made me hesitant to trust him. I didn't take her word wholesale, but I was sceptical of him and resisted the urge to get caught up in the "Elon hosted LAWAY" hype. And dang, she was so right.
Yep , from her i got a lot too. Also i remember a stream where anonxm ex employees did gossip pretty i interesting stuff how he isnt smart, at all. Or avoinds domehow being held acountable for gross obvious environment regulations, like space x , sendibg rockets whete you explicit shouldnt. Honestly what got me was the, yeah in reality robots are about functionality , not looking human. Why do you want a human looking warehouse robot?! And of yourse the only showcase, being a robot dance, by a person. And hannah is great 😊
The idea of Elon Musk is really cool. It’s unfortunate that the real Elon Musk just doesn’t measure up. I was a fan, too, until I signed up for Twitter and saw his Tweets. Speaking of a company town built by Elon Musk - I see him paying people in Dogecoin.
Honestly the thing that disappoints me about this video is a Chicagoan not discussing Pullman when bringing up company towns. For shame, how dare, and whatnot.
i watched his show sooo much! when i was 12 his show was the first place i heard of OCD, and that's what clued me in to the idea that i might have it (based on relating to a lot of what the guest was saying) and that turned out to be true -- so i felt an emotional connection to his advice for far too long
Also, not an expert on motessori schools, but from my own experience, they don't give enough support to nuerodivergant students-esp adhd, reject disabled students, and the one I went to just ignored science and social studies. It's not all bad, but there needs to be more regulations.
To be honest, I’ve never liked him. He was always giving off apartheid, manifest destiny vibes. It was a running joke with my white male friends (I’m a Black woman) that every time Elon did something questionable, they’d say “Jasmine’s going to say it’s the apartheid showing.” After the twitter purchase, they’ve stopped being as sarcastic. Rather than PR, white people in America also engaged in segregation. The dog whistles don’t always register because they don’t realize how normalized it is in American culture.
Just my own personal belief, but I find it FAR more commendable for a person to admit that they were wrong in their support of a person or philosophy in the past. As opposed to a person who was (or more often claims to have been) 100% correct in their belief from the very beginning. It demonstrates far more accountability, and a willingness and more importantly a drive to consistently grow and adapt their views. So yeah, you're awesome for being willing to own up to your own mistakes ^_^
They didn't want to call it "Boringtown"? It makes me wonder if he's planning to build an ark for escaping earth. Last I checked epcot's international employees are basically indentured servants.
I would love to see you review the Conspirituality book when it comes out and Collab with the folks who are behind it. Their podcast is great about discussing the nuance about how folks fall into this stuff.
Elon is a control freak. He can barely run a company much less 6, and don't forget in a few years he wants to manage a Mars colony, on top of a company town
Savy promotes Defunctland? Now that's cool- and goes to show how 'Company Towns' are not exclusive to vague companies or MLMs, but also big brands we do know and debate about, like Disney and Tesla.
A real world supervillain... He's Louie Luthor, Lex Luthor's rich but stupider cousin. He puffs himself up as an inventor and visionary, but despite his ideas, his genius is a bluff that some people believe due to hiring the right press relations team. Supergirl keeps accidentally defeating him because he keeps saying creepy things in public about her, and also his staff.
I don't know about a human supervillain, but there is a quick quiz online now where you have to figure out if a quote was said by Elon Musk or Mr. Burns from 'The Simpsons.' I kid you not, the only way I could tell when the Mr. Burns quotes were being used was that they sounded like they were deliberately written for a cartoon character. Other than that, fairly indistinguishable.
All the pointlessly smug comments on the last Elon video acting like you were stupid for being a fan of his years ago and they were so super duper smart they always thought he was an idiot were so dang irritating
Yes! “Supervillain” is perfect. However, he always was; just kept it under wraps so long as his ego was fed, and no criticism came his way. No, you weren’t stupid, Savvy. You are a person of good faith, and had not seen otherwise in the man. Also, what you say about hustle culture is true, and is an ingrained dimension of almost every American or person raised in the US. As someone who mostly was not, I see it rear it’s ugly head in even the most progressive, liberal people I know, unexpectedly and often unbeknownst to them.
Don't you know Savy?? People aren't allowed to change their minds when presented with new information and/or new perspectives, EVER. And their first opinion is obviously the most true one. /s Content creators aren't pillars of moral purity, they're people who can and will develop over time.
I always kinda side-eyed Elon. I thought he was smart and funny, but also very immature. And then he bought Twitter and now I've got full-on disgust face whenever I hear about him.
One shouldn't be so afraid to admit that one was wrong. After all, that's the first step forward! It's sad that people try to shame you for admitting a mistake. We're all humans (I assume), mistakes will happen to all of us. The important thing is to correct them =) For me, I was a huge fan of Rowling before finding out what a horrible person she was. It's not always that visible and people are also different in how we pick up clues. So, some notice it earlier and some later... that's no reason to shame anyone. Rather, if you think you are seeing something others don't... point it out and make it known instead of blaming the others for not noticing!
I was a fan of Rachel Hollis until she put out that video completely unmasking herself saying she never wanted to be relatable. That’s when I found Savvy.
I honestly didn't know much about the guy or even tesla as I grew older. From what I've seen now, he seems like those undercover villains until the mask slips and he never puts it back on. Also be wary of ppl who "always knew." Hindsight bias makes people recall skepticism that they didn't really consider in the past. There's nothing wrong with realizing someone u like is a major butt.
Also those company towns literally happened down in S. America with the United Fruit Company and had an all out war and killed thousands of the workers during a revolt.
I used to like Jeffree Star as an LGBT emo back in high school; I didn’t learn about the racism til I was at a BLM march a few years ago where someone asked where I got my highlighter… 😅 Luckily they were kind; I felt awful but that’s part of learning… I never really got into drama channels or followed controversy in the beauty community because there are plenty of more serious causes I try to keep up with. No one knows every thing… Though I don’t know how I missed the lipstick nazi thing…
