Ironic that this is probably the same accelerometer in the flight controller that's in my $1000 plane.

Probably. I think the gyro is probably known, but the integration code is somewhat new. I put a great deal of faith in the ELRS team to incorporate code after they're thoroughly tested it. So until they mainline it, I consider it experimental.

Great and thank you, I did all the steps and I had Success flashing but I can't get the binding mode for the BETAFPV superp 14ch?

This is really great. Thanks for posting! edit: I got this working on betafpv super-p rx with a few notes. Could not get any flip mode gyro orientation settings to work, the work around is just invert non-flip outputs. You must manually set PID & gain values they default to 0,0,0,0 thus no output. Again, really cool though.

It’s good times to fly RC. Everything is improving so fast. Even tough it’s experimental, this conforts me in my decision to migrate everything to ELRS. And off course thank you Alex. 🙂

SAFE is registered to Spektrum. Alex might have to pick another name. I believe what he calls SAFE mode is bank/angle limits without self-leveling. Spektrum calls it SAFE "Envelope" mode. Spektrum's other SAFE mode is "Self-Level/Angle Demand". This is apparently Alex's "Level" mode.

@@Mikeylikesit1968 What an incredibly stupid thing to say. People can learn to fly RC planes however they want. I've been flying for years and still flick the SAFE switch occasionally when I'm close to crashing doing low level aerobatics...

Great work Alex, Thanks for doing this great video John, So works with ER6, ER8. Will it work on any other RM RX's? You mentioned the option to solder on the ER8, if a person did that will outputs 7 and 8 be available, if yes is that an option on the ER6. You will need to do another video using your microscope and soldering directly to the board.

Jeff, It should compile for other RXs. The problem you'll have is figuring out where to get SCL/SDA. I'm not going to go down that road, so ER6/8/Beta 14ch for now. Outside of those three, I'll just wait for the production units to come out. For me this is simply an experiment.

I am wondering the same thing. The only thing keeping me from moving my fixed wings to ELRS is having to have a separate gyro on my smaller stuff.

Hi John, very informative and great vide, as usual!! So far I have found the following bugs: - Gain only works with the Rate mode, all other gyro modes seem to be at their max gain set in Gyro Gains in the Lua, and are unaffected by the master gain from the Gyro Inputs channel assigned. - Only input channels for which there is a possible pwm output, can be assigned to the Gyro inputs, for instance, for an ER6, only channels 1 through 4 are seen by the gyro for inputs, for an ER8, only channels 1 through 6 are seen for inputs, and so on. All the possible "virtual" channels up to 16 have no effect as inputs (for gain or mode) if they are beyond the channel number for which there are physical pwm output pins. So for an ER6, this only leaves 2 channels to use for model control if you want mode and gain inputs. The "Input Mapping" setting in the Lua always shows 5, and if it increased to more, like 8 or 16, it is reset upon rx power cycle. - The Min/Max pwm pulse width under the Model menu of the receiver wifi page doesn't only affect servo deflection for the gyro, it also sets the min/max deflection with the stick/knob/switch from the TX as well. So if a pwm servo, say ch2, or elevator, output is set to 1500 mid, and 1300 min and 1700 max in that menu, even if the gyro if off or centered and has no effect on the servo, the elevator servo will only deflect from 1300 to 1700 uS pwm pulse width, not its usual 988 to 2012 or what have you, so that setting acts as an end point adjustment rather than only for servo deflection commanded by the gyro. It is somewhat restrictive, and if it is left at its max, since the master gain has no effect on the gyro in level or any other mode other than Rate, the servos do slam all the way past their physical end points sometimes. So either that needs to be fixed, or the master gain needs to be fixed to work in all modes.

Nice walkthrough. Unfortunately, it does not appear to want to compile for my Happymodel EPW6. It is an ESP8266 based board, and from the looks of the errors, libraries are missing. Do you know if there are plans to support those receivers? It does work for my two EPS32 Rx'es. Thanks for putting this information 'out there'. Gordon

I run my ELRS through a Radiolink BYME-A or BYME-D. I have the RX set up as SBUS . $22 for the Gyro plug and play ❤

Can you pass telemetry to a VTX? Maybe involve FC with Gyro? It will allow us to add GPS module for speed tracking, gyro data etc... Is it possible?

Not really. Telemetry is usually layered on top of the video stream as graphical information, not textual. This is done by FC's who ingest video from the camera before passing the video stream on to the VTX.

The Radionaster ER6 and ER8 have an extra dedicated -/+/Rx/Tx connection. Why can't this be used to connect to the gyro instead of losing 2 channels or soldering direct to the cpu? This output is a regular serial output as far as I can tell, I just configured it as sbus on my ER6 in the usual way and it works fine. It appears to work just the same as configuring 2 x pwm channels as one serial output.

There was some tinkering with it, but it didn't work. Unclear as to why. Not a bad thought if you want to get in there and fiddle with it. You might find the combo. Keep in mind this is very recent material and new information will unfold. This is also not a long term strategy, just short term while we wait for integrated options.

I tried connecting a gyro to my ER6 tonight using the serial connection. I followed the procedure shown as closely as I could, flashed the firmware then wired SDA on the GY-521 to the serial port Rx and SCL to the Tx. On the hardware.html page I deleted the serial pins 1 and 3 and entered these pin numbers for SCL and SDA. It seemed to go OK but unfortunately the ER6 would not then bind to my transmitter. It looks like this isn't as simple as I'd hoped! Fortunately everything worked OK when I re-flashed the ER6 with the standard firmware.

great tutorial! very informative. BTW 1) gyro stablization is usually used with FC. I think the gyro here can be used for some RC planes without having a FC. Otherwise, what's the point of mounting a gyro (via i2c) to a receiver? BTW 2) Yeah somebody is gonna solder the gyro into a upcoming ELR receiver.

No, because the code running on the ELRS receiver is what is interpreting the gyro outputs. You can use something like a Hobbyeagle or NX4 gyro stabilizer which takes SBUS or multiple PWM inputs.

I can't say I like tinkering as much as flying. I'd always rather be flying, but I do like to use 3D printing to solve RC problems. It's a great time to have have tools like this at our disposal.

So I did everything you did but when I go to flash I get an error saying this : Not a PlatformIO Project 'Platformio.ini' file has not been found in current working directory. To initialize new project please use 'platformio project init' command

I saw the Matek PWM converter has DA and CL pins, i suppose it can be use them for the gyro ?

Probably not fed back to the RX. Those pins are probably used to support devices for telemetry purposes. You could always give it a try.

ELRS is opensource. If RM wants to use ELRS (and it's clear that's the choice they've made) they are somewhat dependent on ELRS opensource to develop the code.

This is a bit bi-directional. ELRS has reference designs that are used with manufacturer specific spin. The point stands though: Firmware is the gating factor and it is not in the hands of RM. It's in the hands of the ELRS dev team.

Very good point that you show this gyro functions. But I was in touch with one guy developping this gyro mid november last year. He was very reactive and the progress went very fast (sometimes I had to test 3 versions in 1 day). But since severals weeks, it seems that there are no more activities on this subject. He told me that now the project should started to be officially supported by multiple devs, but no more news... I really hope this project is not forgotten, or with very low priority

On my PJ last Friday ELRS expects integration in 3.5. So, not forgotten. Just have to prioritize efforts.

ok, could be long time to wait, 3.3 was in july last year... then at least 6 to 10 months to wait. It's a pity because there were very great progress before and status was very close to a good usable solution.

@@RCVideoReviewsFully agreed with you they make an amazing job, but the drawback of elrs is prioritisations, focus on long range and fast response time fully for fpv. I see very few interrest to have even more range than already acheived, several tens of kilometers should be enough as well as more than 333hz, both are useless for at least 99% of usages, and also for fpv. Other point, there is no roadmap to give better view on futur dev. If I know how long I need to wait, I don't have to ask, wether I can wait, wether I find another solution. Edgetx is also free code but devs gave us a clear visibility on what they do, and where they are going. For me, this is missing for elrs.
