Replacing the rear suspension coil springs on the Volvo 745 wagon/estate. I originally had Nivomat shock absorbers on this car and swapped them for standard ones, so I decided to buy standard springs to match them. I also doing a little Fluid Filming whilst in the area.

A bit unsettling to hear you do the commentary that way :) Like your own presentation better ;) In any case, watching your vids is like visiting a mate's place to tinker on cars.

The suspense is killing me! Did the ride improve with the new springs?
@fhwolthuis
@fhwolthuis 2 года назад
Yeah, I wondered the same!
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 года назад
😄 it did, but I think maybe only in the way that new springs would over older tired springs, nothing drastic, but she does seem to sit very slightly higher and rides slightly firmer 🙂

@@Involvod My first thought when i saw the bouncing, I suspected that the shock absorber had gone bad... But it's only an "unqualified" guess, since I wouldn't consider myself an expert on automobiles. Edit: I was checking out some other videos on your channel when I stumbled across a video where you replaced the schock absorber... so, yeah...

I recall having a customer back when I worked as a mechanic that wanted these self-levelling shocks replaced (this was not a Volvo), when he heard what they cost I think he had a minor stroke.

Serious coin! The good news is on these Volvos the conversion parts are sensible prices and the car rides great actually!

Meyle is a good brand for shocks. I always use German parts if I can ie FEBI or Meyle.

Well done with the plummy accent commentary - please continue this it's very helpful. When I did this same conversion I had to get a rear anti-roll bar - apparently they don't have those if they've got Nivs - are you doing this? And this opens up a debate which no doubt other RWD Volvo drivers have experience with: standard vs heavy duty rear springs. The main point of Nivs was that the rear self-levels if there is a load. But when I put in standard estate springs and stock Sachs shocks, (240 estate) the rear droops badly if there's more than a medium load in the back (But it rides nicely if there's no much in the back). The common cheaper option to remedy this is heavy duty cargo rear springs and standard shocks - though the complaint is usually that they are harsh and the rear bounces around, particularly with no load. Another other option is air shocks and standard springs - but they were becoming hard to get hold of (for a 240, don't know about a 7/940). What have others done about this?

Cheers! I didn't know about the roll bar, will have to look into it. But she does ride fine as is, but I don't exactly chuck it around the corners. I think the other wagon 'Rosalie' had load springs on the rear, they certainly looked alot beefier and yeah, it sat higher and wasn't very nice to drive unloaded (didn't try it loaded to be honest)

"Same size springs" ofc they are, they haven't been compressed a million times though so their stiff, Then you back the car out at the end like you gave it a new paint job. Jump up and down on it again... didn't even show the results like 😕

Haha loved the How To Guide 🤣🤣 those new springs have more turns of metal so firmer. Rear springs and shocks are usually a lot easier than front struts lol Awesome video as always fella!

Sledge, I've been in the same situation with my XC90. It started when it failed the MoT with (among other things) a leaky rear shock absorber. I soon found out that it had Nivomats (Volvo's self-levelling shock absorber) which were fitted to all UK-spec XC90s and cost about £300 each! There's no aftermarket ones so you have to get genuine Volvo ones. Like you, I renew shock absorbers in pairs so it worked out cheaper to fit standard springs and shocks. You have to match the springs to the shock absorbers. I ended up having to farm out the job to my local garage because I was struggling to remove the top nut on one of the shock absorbers. It is all documented in Part 19 of my XC90 videos. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7NA08U3D0Ng.html

Love your content and presentation skills...I would suggest stretching each video to closer to 30 minutes if possible to allow for more "how to" "fun". I really never get tired of seeing different hosts doing essentially the same steps over and over with the same results (insanity?)😃 Anyway, don't know what other constraints you have on you day-to-day, but will always take more of the cars and your wrenching skills if you have the time. Best regards! 👍
