Elton being interviewed in Australia by Michael Parkinson. This interview took place in mid August 1982, at the end of Elton's US tour.
They cover a variety of topics and Elton sings Rocket Man, Empty Garden, Blue Eyes as well as a medley of tunes (including Crocodile Rock and Waltzing Matilda) on an old pub piano.
This new HD version was recently broadcast online and is in much better quality than previously seen versions.
Enjoy!

Elton speaks about the Middle East blowing up in the 80's. Wow nothing has ever changed there, it's been a constant for an eternity. Nice to hear Empty Garden, one of Eltons best songs thats rarely played in concert. Incredible interview at the height of Elton John's career.

Emotional seeing & hearing Elton so many years ago. I’m not sure if it’s nostalgia or a love of him and music from my youth. He seems like a gentle soul here. I pray he enjoys his retirement from the road touring and spends time with his beautiful family and great friends. ❤

Wow, this was excellent. I started not to watch it, due to its length, but I'm so glad I did. I had no idea he could be so patient and nice in these interviews that were so extensive. He was so open and talkative....about pretty much everything....even highly personal things. As far as his singing, it was as good as ever, and one thing that struck me with all the songs he did......I don't think I've ever heard an artist perform every song as well LIVE as on the record! But he does it here on every single thing he sang! It was really incredible. And playing the piano the way only HE can play it, while singing so well at the same time....well, I am simply amazed by it. It just shows what a once in a lifetime talent he is. And lastly, when he sang "Blue Eyes" here, I actually thought it was BETTER than the record. Much better, as a matter of fact. And the fact that this was in 1982 and 40 years ago made me think that's impossible! Blue Eyes doesn't seem like it could have possibly come out 40 years ago, but indeed, it did! Where has my life gone?!?! 🤔😊

Elton is considered by musicologist a genius because he was trained in classical music but can play without written music in front of him which is a rare talent combined with the ability to write melodies and sing in a unique voice which makes him a total one off the like of which don't come along very often
@cindytartt4048
@cindytartt4048 7 месяцев назад
@@michaeltrimmer8899this makes no sense whatsoever. As a musicologist and classical conductor I can state that a natural but studied trait of ANY musician is to read music but also to play without manuscript, & to write melodies & sing them. Obviously EJ is in a class of his own but I don’t think those traits you’ve mentioned are particularly rare.

So many of these old interviews of stars when they were young you see the very humble and idealistic side of them before the business and life harden them and change them. Like unpolished diamonds. Elton almost reminds me here of how one behaves when you visit your grandparents. Certainly a charming glimpse into the past. Obviously a legendary talent.
