He was so good because he never, ever outshone his guests. He respected them by being prepared and was truly interested in what they had to say ... because he learned something from each of them. Urbane, humble and always a gentleman. He was a gift from England - not just for England but the world. Rest in peace, dear man. And thank you for the many delightful years of interviews of the most interesting among us.
He was simply the best at what he did, some great interviews and memories to look back on, thanks for all the great memories and laughs, R.I.P Michael Parkinson, 🙏❤️
I've just found out Parky has passed away, I'm in shock and saddened that this Gentleman of British Television has left us. I spent most of my childhood, teen years and early adulthood watching this lovely man cast his magic and light around us. RIP Parky, truly you will be missed Sir.
Yep, I was born in 1961, so it was similar for me. He was big in Australia and did a series or two here (and, of course, this special). Parkinson was a great show for the family to watch together and I have many fond memories of laughing loudly at the Billy Connolly and Dame Edna shows. I was a film buff from 10 and so I also loved the shows with the Hollywood legends too. RIP Parky.
R.I.P. Sir Michael Parkinson. Both your parents and the whole of Britain & Ireland thank you for the extraordinary public service you gave over your life. It truly was a "win win" situation in every way. Thank you. We hope and pray you have been well rewarded with eternal joy.
The song Summertime had me in tears, I’m leaving my second home. I’ve lived in Scotland for 23 yrs and now I’m moving back home to be there for surviving family members. I’m a mess internally through the thought that some of the people I’ve met have turned out to be some of the worst I’ve met. But some have shown me what it means to be a true friend and supported me through my years here, of the loss of my mother in 2003, and my father in 2021 …. My marriage in 2015 through an uncaring partner. But if any of my friends whom l haven’t seen for quite a few years , simply “thank you”.
A fantastic 75 minutes of class performances. Laugh with Billy Connelly & cry at Dr Jacob Bronowski's description of his visit to an extermination camp. Wonderful television
Saw Barbara Walters complain how Fred Astaire was very difficult to interview, yet saw Parkinson do so with apparent ease and enjoyment. A skilled interviewer! A wondrous talented guest
That's surprising to hear, because I've seen some great interviews with Astaire, including Parky's and also Dick Cavett's. Maybe Fred just wasn't a Babs fan.
I still find it incredible people had to have a license to watch TV and cops would knock on doors of houses with an antenna to see if they were complying. Australia had them too, but gave up TV licenses long before the UK did (at least I hope the UK has?)
OMG!! I had completely forgotten about this interview. As always l was overwhelmed by these two very amazing men.Thank you so very much for reminding me of the gifts that these musicians give to us.😊
I remember watching the Emu interview in the 70's as a kid with my nan, I laughed so much I almost wet myself. The golden time of Saturday night TV. Rip Michael and Rod.
There aren’t any celebrity that I would be proud that my son would interview. Those days are gone, when there hard working people who became celebrities, these days , just pop your boob or do a stupid job & these young ones think they’re celebrities. I’ll end it by saying that Mr. Parkinson was a rare gem that you will not find ever again. May Mr. Michael Parkinson RIP, with his parents. 🙏🙏🌹🇦🇺🇬🇧🥂
Because anyone with a smartphone and RU-vid access can be a "journalist" or "talk show host" and as many seem to do it for their fame, rather than an interest in OTHER people, interviewers such as Parkinson and Dick Cavett (whom I consider his American counterpart) are harder to find. There are some who can ask a question, then sit back and listen to the answer, formulating their next question from what's just been said to them, rather than from the list in their lap, NOT missing a scoop or great story because they WEREN'T rudely staring at that list as their guest dropped a bombshell, but they are few and far between. We were spoiled and we didn't know it. Interviewing is an art. It doesn't just "happen", because you're a good talker. They're the worst interviewers, more interested in the sound of their own voices than their subjects! I'm probably rambling, but that's because I just saw another "interviewer" ask a question (with opinion included) then let the guest get a few sentences out, before interjecting (or rather, talking over till guest shut up) with an anecdote about herself, about how the guest's film reminded them about that time in their life when....
I adore Sir Michael Parkinson, as he is one of us; a great British Northener, and from a mining heritage. He was also an extraordinary journalist and chat show host.

Proud to say I nearly met Mike once. He came to the Barnsley Chronicle offices where I worked as a reporter around 50 years ago. We were not introduced to him but he knew our News Editor Don Booker, who actually appeared on This is Your Life, when it was Mike's life story. Marvellous interviewer. Mike you are much missed.
The Greatest interviewer ever on tv. There will never, ever be another Michael. So intelligent and a remarkible talent to extract what he did from all these people. Stevie in Scotland.
Michael Parkinson - for me the very best "talk show host" ever. So be "read up" - so well prepared!! So positively engaged. So relaxed, so mentally present for those he met. And his ability to be constructive, creative and completely trustworthy at all times!! surprised (and perhaps not always forewarned, but still - his human factor made everything very easy!) at what "emerged" from his interviewees (a bit rudely - from his guests - who, despite everything, were the most important!). And - most importantly! - he was NOT tempted to take the main role. Never.
What a great interviewer who was always game for a laugh, and what a career. thanks for all the great shows and Interviews. R.I.P Sir Michael Parkinson
Ustinov was great...Orson welles was good but he was a bullshitter...ustinov was a statesman...and a fantastic story teller...That's what lacking now...storytelling...their just plugging some book, song or film
The greatest compliment I can pay 'Parkie' is what I think is his biggest attribute and that's his ordinaryness, what you see is what you get, no airs and graces!
Watch the 50 years on BBC last night one of the last pieces in the show Dr Jacob bronowski ,made me so emotional , just hearing his account.of the war and happening.
Such a delight to listen to, I wish this went on for another hour, it was so much fun and eye opening! Mr. Parkinson is such a wonderful interviewer, always asking penetrating questions and actually listening to his guests.
Kathy Holland makes sense as many Aussies’ ancestry is there (though mine is predominantly Scandinavian and Germany with a smattering of Ireland and England, which I’m glad for! I love your country and can’t wait to visit again. Glad you liked the video!
Have not ever met a fellow Aussie that didn't adore Parky. Even as kid, loved his style. His biggest asset was to ask a question that demanded a 5 minute response. (Not counting Meg Ryan)
So sorry to hear you’ve died Michael, I remember you a lovely guy who sent bottles of wine to our table when I was with Peter Dawson. And watching you play cricket in Bray. Lots of fun in the Crown pub. I have wonderful memories of you. Love and condolences to your lovely family. Love Diana.
Thank you for this. 👌 Means even more knowing Sir Parky has moved on. Deep respect for you Sir Michael 🌹always looked forward to your shows and laughed so much. 💜💌🙏
Love love love the Bing Crosby song. He is my favourite entertainer ever. Kerry Packer interview was also terrific, highly intelligent and fascinating gentleman. Muhammad Ali was very handsome, smart and charismatic. Thankyou this was wonderful.❤️
what an incredible guy and what a wonderful life he had. so educational, so many experiences that made him the man he was. the youth today will never experience anything like this.
In the 70,s I was allowed to stay up for 3 things. Miss World Eurovision Song Contest And Parkinson Not sure about the first 2 😂but Parkinson has giving me joy my whole life since youtube
I always watched Michael Parkinson’s on a Saturday night in the uk. Had fabulous guest on. I remember Bill’s first time. Rod Hull & Emu. Bett Davis , when she was allowed to smoke. So many over the years.
Why does the BBC not bring back this kind of exceptional TV , is it because we don’t have exceptional people alive anymore, to star in this sort of programme.
All the BBC now has are a group of woke indoctrinated people with no sense of humour. You can only laugh if the joke includes enough four letter words beginning with F & ending in K & heaven help you if you believe there are only two sexes...male & female. That is why they are incapable of making decent programmes that real people actually want to watch.
Yes - Parkinson was in a class of his own. I thought Clive James became a very good interviewer. But I suspect that Clive, God rest his soul, would agree that Parky was the best.
@@PetroicaRodinogaster264 Well, sure. But I've seen all the main US and UK ones, just because of the Tube of You. Melvyn Bragg is very good as well. And in a different mode, Johnny Carson was fantastic: he was like a great passer in basketball: always gave the fine assist to the comedian-guest, for example.
Wow...what a piece of music...the violen and the mouth organ ( that's sounds like a euphemism)... I should say harmonica..but that's a beautiful bit of jamming
Really enjoyed revisiting with Michael Parkinson at 50 show tonight will always be the best interviewer for me brings back so many memories this was the show to watch there was some very emotional interviews it made me shed a few tears especially about what the nazis did in the camps so sad it really brought it home to you very moving Well Done Michael another fantastic show with your families help from one Yorkshire person to another great stuff take care ☺😷💗👍👏🍺🌹🌈
Another lover of Yorkshire (in fact he reminds me very much of my grandfather) and just taking a trip down memory lane and to see all the celebrities in the audience now looking a teeny bit older and being reminded of my husband & my own first feelings on landing in Australia by a fellow countryman. What an extraordinary nights viewing.
I adore Michael Parkinson, as he is one of us; from a. mining family. from the North of England. He is also an extraordinary journalist and chat show host.
