In this video, we look at the voice of Elton John when he was starting out and how his voice has changed over the years. Join me as we celebrate the singing career of Sir Elton John!
Elton John - Singers Then And Now
The goal of this series is not to make fun of people, to show a picture of them in their youth and then mock them in their older age.
The goal is to showcase how voices have sustained over time. And who has taken care of their voices and who hasn't, and what was the result. And what could've been done differently for those that did not take care of the voices.
Could they have sustained their voices? And can they be rehabilitated now? Some singers (few) are just gifted with great genes and have been able to sustain their voices on their own. This is a rare exception. The rest of us mere mortals have to work at it, just like we have to work at our voices to get range, pitch, power, control, longevity, stamina, and so forth.
In addition, it's just really cool to check out the incredible careers of these artists and marvel at their singing.
So today, we are looking at none other than Sir Elton John!

Elton had vocal nodules, vocal cord edema, and lots of scarring that decreased his elasticity. That's why his falsetto became breathier after 1986, and why you can hear something vibrating in his voice today. He smoked pot and then would go on stage during the Euro leg of the 1986 tour and it caused a great deal of vocal trauma. By September 1986, he was diagnosed with nodules, and, in December of that year before laser surgery, was coughing up puss and phlegm during shows. His vocal abilities were restored to before the nodules after the operation but because of the scarring earlier in the year, his tone remained huskier, falsetto breathier, and his voice lost some of that ease he once had. An abusive tour in 1998 further caused trauma and that was when he began to retire the falsetto in a more dramatic way. Today, after 2 years of rest, he sounds better than he has in the last 20 years - but you can still hear the effects of the scarring to this day.

The scarring is mainly due to the use of weed in the 80s

Tbh if I can say one thing, I'm glad he got to rest his voice during the pandemic, cuz most shows from 2010-2019 sounded rather dreadful (with some exceptions such as the hyde park show shown in this vid)

I've noticed that a lot of singers who are known for having strong vibratos when they're young, develop that dark "wobble" vibrato when they're older. I'm wondering now if that is inevitable, or if there's a way to not hear an artist's age in their vibrato. Thank you, Ken.

Wow hadn't thought about this... But if I'm not mistaken when Callas returned to singing she had a problem with Wobble. Apparently its common; would make an excelent topic for a video and probably a series on vibrato
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 2 года назад
That is a really good question, thank you John for posting it. The problem lies not with the Vibrato itself per se. The problem lies with the original vibrato being a "true vibrato". And Eduardo, before you start chiming in on Maria Callas I want to clarify a few things about that (I'll get back to that). First, there are an incredible amount of singers, not the least of which were Enrico Caruso, Jussi Björling, Plácido Domingo, Mario Lanza, Whitney and many many others that had a huge vibratos and maintained the consistency of their vibratos until the very end. As I have aged, I have noticed that if I do not practice every single day, (and I mean pretty much every single day), my vibrato starts sounding like a wobble as well. But it's not just the "practicing" of the vibrato. As I have stated many times, true vibrato is a relaxation response to a strongly supported whole tone "relaxing" into the state of oscillation. In the case of Maria Callas, she did not have just "one" vibrato. Often times she would use multiple speeds and widths of her vibrato in a single passage of a song. (This was done for emotional effect and was not just a "relaxation response" for holding a note). This is a very important key note to point out (and I will get back to that in a minute). This begs the question did she use a "real" vibrato. (I know my bel canto aficionados are going to come in like a freight train on this one but it's the truth. And by the way she's one of my all time favorite Sops). When she came back from a long hiatus of singing, she struggled through what was her real vibrato and what was manipulated in her younger and mid years. Which brings me to a very important point that I have argued with the biggest names in the vocal coaching business. If we were to use a spectrum analyzer to look at different vibratos (kind of like looking at a heart monitor that spikes up above a flat line or below a flat line) we would see something very interesting. In the case of Elton John, we would see that his vibrato spikes "above" the flat line. This is true of Freddie Mercury and many others. One of the world's most famous vocal coaches named Seth Riggs believes this is the correct way a vibrato should respond while viewing on a spectrum analyzer. As I have argued with him over this, that would be an impossibility if true vibrato is a "relaxation response" to holding a whole tone. If you are holding a tone and then relaxing into a state of oscillation, it would only stand to reason that the whole tone with dip below the line not push above it. If it pushes above it it cannot be a relaxation response and must be a forced response of oscillation. This is precisely what Maria Callas was dealing with. This is precisely what Elton John is dealing with here. Now this isn't to say that a "true" vibrato can't deteriorate into a wobble. Of course it can. But so can many other things such as losing pitch and strength in a sound if it is not kept in shape. So we must exercise our vocal folds in order to keep the moisture in them for resiliency and elasticities just like stretching any other muscle in your body. And we must also have the corresponding body strength to accommodate this. I have three videos on the subject here on RU-vid for anyone interested. I also dig deeply into these subjects in my webinars that I give monthly at Kentamplinvocalacademy.com for those doing my course. Here are those videos. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AorKMnKgTw8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JHbMvgIhE3w.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dy01DsSWmyI.html

For me, the young Elton John is a completely different singer than the older one. That already applies to the "I'm still standing" Elton. He somehow managed to completely change his tone, his phrasing and the way of feeling in his voice. I mean the guy who sings "crocodile rock" is the same then the one singing "Circle of Life". That's unbelievable! And in my oppinion this modern Elton is the singer with one of the most unique voices on earth. The singer who sang "crocolile rock" was just one out of thousands. Phenomenal! Greetings, Klaus from Germany

Besides your music being the soundtrack of my High School and College years, Elton's songs (Crocodile Rock, Rocketman, Tiny Dancer) were the soundtrack of my childhood. Good points you make regarding his progression over the years. Hard living and not keeping up with the vocal exercises shows through on the later year's performances. Would love to hear your then/now take on Kenny Loggins. Loggins & Messina was also part of that soundtrack of my childhood that my Dad introduced (along with Poco, Pure Prairie League, The Eagles, Steve Miller Band). God bless and rock on bro!

I really love Elton John's voice and his music. I think his voice was best in the 70's and early 90's. But I don't think he had a vocal coach. Maybe if he trained his voice more it would help him recover his voice after his vocal cord surgery and it would sound closer to his youthful sound.His voice before and now sounds like two different people.

I think some of these artists just begin to take it easy, much like any older person moving up in years. They're in a different place now as a person. There's less importance placed on certain things in their life. Their priorities shift. It's also becoming more and more apparent that a lot of singers back then, as great as they were, were just singing higher than they were really ready to or should have.

I was singing Rush songs and the Garfunkel parts with my guitarist friend singing the Simon parts by the time I was 17, but I lost my practice in emotional turmoil by the time I was 26. I didn't start to recover until 2013. Even then it's been a struggle to get to good tone and get past the desperate tension I once had. I really enjoyed this comparison and I've watched a number of yours Ken and think they are very interesting and useful. Elton has always been a pianist that happens to sing to me personally. He only ever writes the music and Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics as far as I know. Years ago really good singers mentioned drinking water and you talked about maintaining moisture in your vocal cords, I think. Perhaps there's a correlation. Really successful singers would be tempted to 'dish the water 😀' (a pun?) and drink something more expensive.

Darn ... Now I wanna listen to a rocketman cover hehe Think I really like the first song, but age shows a lot more on the other 2. To be honest, what I like most about this series is how their approach changes not only due to changes in their voice, but also due to their growth as musicians. In this regard, I think Halford did a really great job. He often tends to be a bit more selective about using his higher range making it very focused. As a result his songs sound slightly less energetic but more dramatic and focused. Now specifically in Eltons case, its somewhat hit or miss... But hey, it still sounds good overall

You never mentioned that he had vocal surgery to remove lymph nodes back in 1986! I think that's kind of important to mention and explain how that might affect his sound in his later years.

Also important to note about Elton is that his voice really changed after he had nodes removed from his vocal cords in the mid-80’s (it was after the live album that he recorded in Australia). Also, Elton turned 75 last week. 🙂

I'm sure I read somewhere that he lost his falsetto range after a vocal surgery and hasn't been able to/tried to train it back since.

For what Elton John had to work with, he really became great. He was not the power Balad singer like Steve Perry and others like that, and he never tried to be, he always had a problem with his weight and more, but he took all that and outsold most and became very successful. In his way he had a great unique voice, especially his diction. Truly a legendary artist

EJ is in his early 70's. He struggles badly these days. He's actually not very bad here in your vid. But I do notice his changes in tone. Still a great entertainer.

Hes been sounding better than he did 20 years ago in recent shows. Hitting im still standing notes effortlessly and at a fast tempo. I think elton has more of a range than he shows

I saw him two times live in 2022, he definetly sounded better than in 2018/19 before Covid. I'm with you, I think he don't pushes it to the limits cause he had to save his voice for his hundreds of live shows. He's 75 now, taken drugs for almost 30 years and he's still able to sing live and sound great just in a different way. This Man is a force of nature, Love him forever

Great video, actually Elton went to a vocal coach in the 80's but because he had sung with a terrible technique in the 70's and used a lot of drugs in the process, the damage was already done and he had to go to a vocal surgery in 1986. After that he couldn't really sing falsettos and started to lose upper chest voice as well. Still, his singing has been pretty great when considering he thinks of himself more as a pianist who happens to sing along with his songs.

I've watched many Elton JOhn performances... especially from the 2000's and up. Sounds like he's constricting his throat a lot in order to artificially recreate some of the naturally lost range in his voice from age. Also, in the early 1990's I read he had throat surgery in order to remove some nodules or growths. He complained that after that surgery he lost the high range and the ability to sing falsetto and had to resort to the constriction technique. The one positive I hear is that Elton improved the melodic orchestration in many parts of his songs to make up for his net loss. He sings passages differently with more inventive melodies and adds more "bluesier" parts.... which is something I wish more singers would do. I'm one of those guys that believe that what was recorded on the album doesn't necessarily have to be exactly what you perform live. Songs can always be improved and remain works in progress.

To me his voice sounds better nowadays. I prefer dark tone. He is more characteristic. He has some distortion on some notes. Ofc Lost some range. Maybe he should change key a bit to make song fit his voice.

In fairness to Elton John, he’s freely admitted the damage cocaine did to his voice. He also has embraced his baritone vocals since the late eighties rather than trying to rehabilitate his upper range. David Bowie went through something very similar in the 80s and then worked his way back into developing a somewhat healthier upper range on songs like Ziggy Stardust. Elton John has developed what appears to be an intentional tone that I know some fans actually prefer now. He’s almost become as you’ve referred to as a “character” singer of sorts.

Can I ask you a question?….. is there such a thing in singing a automatic transition? Or automatic something or other? When I took singing college my teacher wanted to know if he could work with me due to the fact that I have albinism and I have oscillating eyes. They just move whenever they want and I don’t always know when because they do it regularly. This is due to my optic nerve issue. Evidently people with albinism have their optic nerve effected by no melanin. Anyway I wasn’t interested then but I still love to sing and now I sing and my cat goes crazy!!!

If Elton was technically perfect, I wouldn’t be such a fan. It’s his amazing tone and style choices that pull me in. Even in the more recent years, it still comes through for me. Kinda like Stevie Nicks. Just doesn’t matter that it’s changed some over the years.

Ken two questions: Were the "then" tracks studio or live? They sounded like studio cuts. Or maybe he was that good to do it live. And second, I believe Elton had some significant polyp surgery .... maybe in the 90's? Anyways, love your honest expert reviews!
