I have to agree, they were trained and qualified in security, martial arts etc plus experienced in top notch security. The problem lies within that they would not have had the perks that they were accustomed to from a younger age working for a superstar . It's a possibility that after so many years of living a certain lifestyle, they spent money like there was no tomorrow because working for Elvis Presley was a monetary guarantee or perhaps not as they learned that there are no guarantees in life as the rest of us. It must have been a terrible wake up call.

I did hear a couple of years ago someone had fouvd in the attic years and years ago some writings of Elvis he write after his moms life was over and he was so distraught that he started to write some things down. Then some writings he did in the military about his plan after he got out. But that was all. I can only guess he was too busy or lost track of what he had written so it didn’t continue. Too bad too. Or maybe his reading got in the way. You never know. Possibly Lisa has it someplace. And isn’t sharing it cause she doesn’t think it’s anyone’s business. Which it’s not.

Richard Eidemiller - Well Said!!! In as much as Elvis was a public figure and loved his fans probably more than any other celebrity, he was still a very private person and that should have been respected! Especially by those whom he trusted and were close to him because of that trust. He gave them a life that most only dream of and they betrayed that trust and love in the worst possible way, they broke his heart because they were mad that Vernon fired them and they reacted like vindictive greedy punks. I don't believe for a minute that they did it out of love to help him, BULLSH#T!!! I Don't blame them for not saving Elvis from his Addictions, at that point in time no one could have done that except for Elvis himself. If he could have lasted just a little longer until Betty Ford came out publicly about her battles and opened her clinic he may have had a chance. She changed the worlds perception of addiction and made it understood instead of something shameful to be hidden at any cost. But for his closest most trusted friends (family) to release a sordid tell all knowing what it would do to him is unforgivable!

How can anyone be an Elvis fan and defend these 3 men’s actions writing that book. Talking about kicking a man when he’s down! What’s wrong with people to think that’s ok? Elvis was struggling with his mental/ physical health and prescription dependency, and they thought humiliating him was going to help him? give me a break! They wanted to destroy Elvis’s popularity. Well, it didn’t work.
@synchronicity1470

these men's tell-all book DID effect Elvis to a terrible, horrible degree. It was the last straw; destroyed him that these men he entrusted his life & personal private time to would betray him in such a way with that book! He was stricken! devastated. He felt horribly betrayed and rightly so. His nurse Tish said it impacted Elvis right up til the end. It doesn't even matter if they shed tears, regretted the book. They should regret putting the last nails in his coffin. You don't 'help" a world-wide superstar by destroying his reputation. They wrote that damned book in revenge, not to help. Saying it was to propel him to Rehab or get off drugs was a nice after-thought of excuse for doing what they did.

Great interview as usual, thank you! I found much of what he said unbelievable though. First of all, that must have been the worst deal in publishing history, if he only made one and a half cents per book, and no say about what went into the book. Why bother? And then there's the old issue of - if you love Elvis - why publish something that could destroy his career and claim it was to "help" him? Help him how? He said right in this interview that they were fired with 2 weeks pay and how could he take care of his family? So that's the real truth right there. As Lisa said, they "took away his dignity" and I agree. I especially was turned off by his asides about Vernon. The subject is not Vernon, it's him. He sounded like a sincere guy, but I found what he said very hard to swallow.
@jimfoster7986

katgirlblue Took away his dignity? You don’t think shitting his bed because he’s loaded on dope didn’t take away his dignity? @katgirlblue
@katgirlblue 3 года назад
@@jimfoster7986 "Nearly drowning in rice soup because he passed out from drugs didn’t take away his dignity?" No it didn't. He was hooked on drugs as you didn't stop mentioning. That and the first incident you cited were awful, but were the result of terrible addiction to drugs, and happened in private, behind closed doors, not on stage for all the world to see. That's what happens with addiction, you lose control. It's a terrible sight to see, but anyone else who's been through it, fortunately for them, doesn't have "friends" publishing the awful details for all the world to read about. It was humiliating, and even worse was the charade of saying it was for his own good. Give me a break, destroying his career couldn't "help" him. As for being overweight he was very bloated especially in the middle, that's for sure, his colon was very enlarged and digestion totally screwed up. Should he have been wearing a white jumpsuit in that condition? No, but he also should not have been on stage at all in that condition. I really don't think a poor choice of costume, that he decided himself, can be compared to the public humiliation his "friends" decided to do, to "help" him. No comparison.

As I recall wasn't it Dave Hebler who said in an interview, "how do you protect a man from himself"...............I wasn't there, but that response to a question at the time, seems so genuine and tells me they did all they could in their position at the time to try and stop the madness...........The question was always why didn't someone try an do something to help Elvis.............well, they did and were fired.......Elvis was not going to let anyone tell him what to do.........I used to call my Mom, my female Elvis.......she is no longer with me, but she was addicted to cigarettes and the multiple cancers and chronic issues that it caused made our family life very difficult, I was the caregiver ........ but finally I had full control.......and I got her another 12 years of life..........I shut it down and was demonized for it........so, I do have some insight into this on some level.........unfortunately I had family and friends bringing her cigarettes and medications behind my back, the complete opposite of Red, Sonny, and Mr.Hebler who tried to stop it...........I will stop there, but in conclusion.....I was the Elvis guy in school.......I miss him like all of you.......being a kid waiting for those movie albums to show up at the store was the highlight of my youth........I remember sitting on the sofa in our living room waiting for Elvis to come on Dec 3rd , 1968.....I can still feel the fabric of that sofa ........I wish I was there sometimes to help Elvis if I could........take care.....stay safe

They are superficial. Cant see past anything. And think for themselves. These guys TRIED TO HELP. But you will NEVER SAVE A MAN FROM HIMSELF. @@fender1000100 Well by your and this POS own words if you can't save a man from himself then you know a poorly penned , tell all , tabloid trash book wouldn't either. Not all fans are "low IQ" nor think Elvis was a perfect man. It was his personal struggle and he at least deserved it to be kept private by those he trusted and took care of all their lives. This was done out of anger and and Sonny West admitted as much in a later interview. Red West later said he owed Everything he had and accomplished to Elvis Presley. With the emphasis on "Everything". This crumb wasn't in his life for enough years to tell the Elvis story. Nowhere in that mess was a "plea" to their friend to get help. Poorly written garbage by idiots who were angry the "party" ended, and had to figure out their lives on their own.

Don't you remember why they were fired? There were many lawsuits against Elvis because they were getting women pregnant and tearing up furniture in hotel rooms. They said they were fired with 2 weeks pay. What did they need? Didn't Elvis buy them homes, cars, jewelry. The book was made to hurt Elvis, not help him. I will say I think during the last several years that Red had regrets and maybe Sonny to.

@Saphire Blue Under the law an employer does have some responsibility for it's employees actions while on the job. If they were touring and people were being unnecessarily roughed up under the guise that they were only protecting Elvis or rooms damaged occupied for his concerts he can be held responsible. Getting women pregnant doesn't fall under the scope of part of the job of being Elvis bodyguard so not sure about that. I'm sure he didn't want that type of publicity either way.

In 1973 Elvis spent six months on the road touring. This was a grueling schedule especially for Elvis’ energy sapping shows. That just wouldn’t be allowed to happen these days. Just finished listening to the whole interview. I also bought the book back in 1977, mine is also yellow, split at the binding. I have heard Sonny West say that most of what they told Dunleavy was not printed, he chose only the juicy bits of their stories. Sonny also said that they had no say in what was actually in the book. So I do believe what Dave said. I wonder if those tapes still exist. I do believe the 3 of them were conned, as Dunleavy was a tabloid journalist who rushed the book straight to paperback to make a fast buck. He had no intention of publishing their honest recollections. Anyway, that was a very good interview Steve - Thank you very much. 💖

None of us were there. I do believe Red & Sonny loved Elvis, Dave too sounds like a good fella. Sounds like he developed a good relationship with Elvis too, at least until Elvis addiction really took hold. My gut tells me they did try to stop the medication and that's why Elvis had them fired. It's a shame the rehab plan didn't come off. Why shouldn't they write a book on their experience with Elvis, the friendship was practically over. It may have forced him to do something about his lifestlye, they weren't to know it would do more damage. Just like Dr Nick stated he regrets taking the contents out of capsules as all it did was spur Elvis on to take more. Fans need to accept life happens and leave these matters alone. All of them would have been deeply upset when Elvis died and they knew they weren't welcome at the funeral. Great interview, I believe him.

Yes you are right. Too many Elvis fans think he was a saint..And despite his good qualities. He could be a pain in the arse on the other hand. And Elvis biggest problem was self DENIAL. He couldnt see what the terrible diet and prescription drug addiction was doing to him. What contributed to his death was the FILLER in the drugs. They ended up blocking various organs in Elvis body made him chronically constipated. Now add to that his TERRIBLE DIET. Which was basically VOID of any fibre. Which would have acted like a brush to help clear out the crap in Elvis's body. And what do you think was gonna happen eventually. The REALITY IS without these guys around Elvis he would have died 3 or 4 years earlier than he did. And thats the REALITY. He was in such a mess by 73. He was basically a walking zombie most of the time. This is the IGNORANCE of your average Elvis fan. They want to gloss over this reality and pass the buck from Elvis to everyone else. The buck is firmly in Elvis's hand and always will be. The only person responsible for Elvis's early demise is ELVIS. If he had used his money more sensibly. He wouldnt have ended up basically Parkers prostitute in the last 8 years of his life. This is where alot of people see Elvis as being SIMPLE. A BIT DIM. For ALLOWING himself to be in that position to begin with.

@Saphire Blue agree to disagree. Have you read Alannah Nash book on Elvis, came out a long time ago but very in-depth comments by some of the MM guys. Took her a very long time to put it together. Billy refers to the damage that book did to Elvis and also how Elvis intended to deal with it if he heard comments from the audience. There are many anecdotes in the book about how the three who contributed to the book tried to stop the drugs, they paid for that effort with there jobs.
@zucan100
@zucan100 3 года назад
@Saphire Blue Really... I thought it was pretty clear. I disagree they tried to ruin his career. They outed him in the hope he'd wake up to himself, nothing else worked. Vernon, in Elvis name, did the absolutely dirty on them by sacking them with only a couple of weeks pay. 2 weeks after many, many years. They didn't deserve that. I don't see it as a smut book either. There book has stood up over the years as true. We know what happened to Elvis now, if they'd all said nothing, we wouldn't know the things we do. Doesn't stop endearing Elvis to anyone. His popularity is proof of that.
@zucan100
@zucan100 3 года назад
@Saphire Blue I don't have the book anymore to fact check that. I certainly don't recall the points you raise. I also don't think Dave, Sonny or Red had anything to do with the Albert Goldman book, I thought that was Lamar. I read the Goldman book and was blown away by the detail in it. In saying that, over the years so much of the detail here has proven to be factual. Sure it doesn't need to be said but in their defence, fans struggle to understand the decline with someone who seemingly had so much. You then get his last girlfriend who declares he was just a bit overweight, not that sick. Was making big changes in his life for the better. Fans seek to understand the facts. Billy who was there and I believe more than the Aldens, talks about how bad he really was in that last 6 months. End of the day, these 3 involved in this book stated they thought Elvis would die if he kept going the way he was, they were right. They were sacked without any proper assistance and they were treated poorly. They had every right to do what they did in my view.

His account of how the book was written seems plausible and Steve Dunlevy would have naturally embellished or sensationalised it as that was his job. Thank you Steve and Mr. Hebler. I enjoyed the cordial interviewing style, yet you didn’t avoid the hard questions. I do have one constructive critique, if I may, the interview ended quite abruptly. Maybe if you could give the audience and the interviewee a notice that you have so many minutes left, or for whatever reason, that you need to to wrap things up, it would have a less disruptive feel. Then possibly end with a final question. Appreciate your podcast non-the-less. All the best.

Great interview. I actually feel it for this man. We don't know what Elvis was like. As much as we LOVE him we didn't hang with him like these guys did. Vernon didn't help this situation. Never keen on Vernon. Seems a lazy man who never wanted to work. Never wanted Elvis to run out of money cos Vernon wouldn't of wanted to work. He was workshy. Sonny protected Elvis for many years. Iv never actually heard of Dave. Red was a nice chap and I actually think all the Memphis Mafia helped Elvis. They weren't hangers on like ppl call them. Elvis wanted them around. They saw what Elvis was doing to himself. No one could help Elvis but himself. Could u imagine telling Elvis he is doing things wrong or he shouldn't be doing something. Thank you for this interview. While I believe that much that was included in 'that book' was NOT necessary, in my heart I truly believe they wrote it out of their love for Elvis and was hoping it would help him see that he indeed needed help. If they had come out before been fired I could have understood it was to help him. Like he said about Frank Skinner doing a hatchet job on him seems if elvis were their 'Best' friend why is that no more of an hatchet job? Too much blame was laid on Vernon who had come from poverty. The one thing that I do agree with that Dave once said 'how do you protect a man from himself'. I truly wish elvis had cleared house after his divorce when he met Linda including the Stanley boys. I have never heard Dave say anything about Elvis. At all! So anything I hear here is new to me. I don’t think I ever heard anyone speak much about him! So this a new refreshing listen for me. All I knew was he wrote the book which I haven’t read, with Sonny and Red. I chose actually not to read it. I don’t want to read what someone who is negative wrote about Elvis. Sonny said he wrote it with the other two and he was angry at the time he did it. I really don’t think had it not been for a joint effort with two others he wouldn’t have done it. He said he was sorry he did it and then wrote one on his own. To try to make up for what he did. I knew he regretted it. So I decided to not read it. That was another thing how they didn’t get to read the finished book till it was published. I don’t like that a publisher can do that. Too bad they couldn’t stop it. See that’s why chose not to read it cause of what Sonny said.

Interventions with professional guidance were unheard of in the 1970s. Ideally, ALL Elvis's close friends and family members (excluding Tom Parker) should've confronted him TOGETHER. He couldn't have fired them all! Then Elvis should've gone to Hawaii with a new type of entourage: a physician (not Dr. Nick), nutritionist, chef, masseuse, physical coach/trainer, a qualified therapist and his daughter. No contact with Tom Parker! Elvis needed to break some co-dependent relationships.

I never read the book! This guy is just a bitter excuse of a friend. All three of them wrote a revenge book they all felt. Elvis owed them money but they were young enough to find work. Besides who gets paid when you are fired. The book was just another nail in his coffin. Elvis' world was glamorous to the world but in reality it was almost like a prison. Not knowing who you could trust and who loved you for your fame or money ! Do we blame this book for his death no but it was a series of events that helped to speed it up a d they truly needed to accept their part in it. What hurts the most when. I listen to old interviews is they all didn't think he was going to die Just makes me sad.he surely must have thought that no one really cared about the real. Elvis the human being.in so much physical and mental pain ! !

Why do people protect Elvis. Not saying he was a bad person the man had a good and kind heart, but he had emotional issues big time. Dave once said when asked about the book. How can you save someone from themselves and that was Elvis to a tee. He loved being a image and had no touch of reality or wanted to deal with it.

I think Dave, Sonny and Red were unbelievably, stupidly naive to not realise what the book would become. What parts of their stories they would use, and so forth. That goes for Lamar Fike too, with his collaboration with A*** Goldman.

Fantastic interview Steve, and personally I thought Dave’s accounts were balanced and accurate to what I heard happened by various other characters who were around Elvis at the time
