@@leahflower9924 He's never stopped being popular, with 600,000 people visiting Graceland every year since 1978. Elvis in Concert traveling the world since 1997.
Best introduction ever! I just can't get enough of this moment when he joked about singing a sad song you NEVER heard before with BEAUTIFUL words hahaha. I love his sense of humor 😂
Crazy to think that ppl thought Elvis’s moves were inappropriate, he truly was just feeling the music! Parents of those days would drop dead if they saw the artists of today lol
The fact that in 2024, we can watch live footage of a rock and roll legend who once existed is a huge blessing and shows the power of the internet at its best, thank you RU-vid.
What blows my mind is this guy was just a singing, dancing, handsome rock star but to them that was the first one they’d ever seen so it just took their breath away
He’s so fine. Like, I haven’t seen a fine ahh singer like him dance and dress the part. He’s not just a guy, he was a fine mf with a beautiful voice, looks and charisma lol
Elvis was kinda like Eminem. Rock and roll was very much a thing before, but like with Eminem, what was once an art often performed by black artists and relegated to black audiences really broke out into the mainstream and became something EVERYONE listened to. And like Eminem, Elvis was also actually very respectful when it came to crediting their influences and inspirations while doing well distinguish himself and his art. As far as the "stealing" of black music and exploitation of black art and artists goes, that falls squarely on the record labels.
That's an over-simplified take. Elvis was exceptionally good looking and had a vibe about him that drove girls wild. I've heard women today say he was one of the best looking guys ever.
The parents back then thought THIS was a bad influence. Imagine their backlash if they saw the way artists dance today.People today make Elvis look like a saint
@@scoldingwhisper It’s always hilarious to me that it was on a toilet. Nobody took a sec to see if it was drugs just, “yup guy took a crap and died nothing to see here folks……wait it’s Elvis”
Are you understanding that you are now the boomer you are blaming ? They were blaming Elvis because he was outrageous and you are litteraly doing the same thing
Currently on an Elvis binge after seeing the new film. What a showman he was and what a great voice. Its so tragic how he went from this man to who he was at the end. Long live the King 👑.
Just seen the Movie tonight. As how very tragic it was They do so much Justice for him in it. Reminds you he wasn’t just a thing in time but a real caring person.
Watching this you can feel the electricity in the theater. He was an incredible talent. Its funny from our perspective now, that controversy-wise his performance was nothing compared with what ppl do onstage now. He was just being himself, feeling the music, and at the time, audiences had never seen anything like it. Ive seen the recent movie as well, its a shame the direction things went in later years for Elvis (to no small degree via Col Tom) but the gifts Elvis provided us will bever be forgotten!
Yes. He is truly in the groove of the moment and the music. So authentic and free. It's not just performing, it's a true expression of a life force along with the force of the music.
@@ozz7602 they’re all kings. They all had more talent than anyone we got right now-that’s for sure. People take that king stuff too personally. Of course, Elvis came along at the right time, but he was talented, and that doesn’t take anything away from Little Richard or Chuck Berry. They were all great.
@@beerbread Elvis was influenced by many styles of music but he never "stole" anything. He in turn influenced countless others. Did the Beatles then steal from him. I think not.
his style wasnt necessarily unique.. his style was entirely based off black r&b artists. His managers had said that they wanted a white man who could sing like a black man
@@BBPalmer420 that doesn’t mean his style was entirely based off it… it played some influence but he took inspiration from mostly white artists So yea it’s as I said it’s obviously horseshit if you have a modicum of intelligence. He’s not some derivative black rip off. He’s his own and always will be, hence why he’s the King.
It's striking that he laughed it up when the girls screamed at every little motion of his body. It was like he couldn't believe it himself, and took it with laughter. What a man! The King, indeed.
@@peaceandquiet290 It’s truly a testament to how great the man was. Having haters nearly 50 years after your death is a true accomplishment, so he must have been doing something right. Say what you want, he changed the world with his music and left a mark that will last forever.
@@emmadiri7189 in the movie I thought the girls were over the top because how much they screamed. But it was actually accurate after watching this video 😂 the girls really were crazy for Elvis
@@fordastreeets8019 Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, girls got really crazy. I saw Harry Styles live and their screams were already like something out of a movie, I can only imagine what it was like for them.
Short Story: I was 5 and my brother was 7. Dad was a very good disciplinarian and, as such, he set our bedtime each year, and enforced it consistently. On the occasion of Elvis' very first appearance on Ed Sullivan, my brother and I were in bed asleep. At about 8:40 p.m., he came into our room, woke us up, and told us something was coming on TV that never occurred before and that we would Remember for the rest of our lives. Sure enough, it was Elvis. We kids thought we were in another world - and have never forgotten it. RIP, Dad. Love you....
I now get why my mother was so crazy over Elvis. He was so handsome, talented, charismatic and cheeky. He really connected well with the audience. RIP King of Roll n Roll
He’s not even trying. He’s just having a fun time and it’s amazing. What natural oozing talent and charisma. Talent of course but that smirk or smile is killer. I am in awe by pre-70s Elvis. There’s still nothing like that and I’m only 33!
Lmao?? It's comical to me. The screaming the goofy moves, the basic overdone music. It's utter ridiculousness. What's hilarious is the boomers that talk about the old "classics" and refer stuff like this clown show lol
@@disco4535 What matters about a performance is what the perfomer makes you feel, that's why people like different kinds of music, even though all the ones that make it big sound good, you won't like them all because you prefer certain genres. Elvis was a legend and no one can deny it, its not only about his music, but also how he perfomermed and made people feel.
I love watching this clip because it shows how fun and silly he must have been. His live performances are always better than his practiced, choreographed movie performances, in my opinion.
His handsome face, tall shapely figure, distinctive unique voice and charming personality,no matter what decade, no matter what song he sings, he will become a megastar
His charisma is just... wow. i can see why everyone fell in love with him (except angry fathers ahah). He KNOWS he's in control, but somehow still manages to have a humble feel to him, laughing and finding it amusing when the girls scream.
What's interesting is that at first he was confused, and I believe he went to one of his crew or band members and was like, "Why are they screaming like that?" And they went, "I don't know, but whatever your doing I want you to do it again!" Of course at this time he gotten used to girls screaming. Or at least made it tolerable. Lol
tenía amplia experiencia de vida, eso lo hacía confiado a comparación de los actuales jóvenes que viven encerrados en su casa, escuela, universidad, trabajo
People need to understand what this video represents. You are seeing the first superstar in history. The moves he was doing on stage had never been seen before on television. They were common in the south (where he was from) but conservative adults had never seen anything like this. It was exceptionally provocative. MANY church groups, parents, conservatives rallied together to boycott Elvis. They even had a class-action lawsuit against the Ed Sullivan show for broadcasting "such filth". This is the birth of rock and roll. You hear those girls screaming constantly. This is really the first time that had happened in history, especially for television. Some doo-wop singers were famous/handsome and the girls would get excited over them but Elvis was such a different story. He was such a disruptor in the 50's and singlehandedly changed the culture of the nation. If I recall correctly The Ed Sullivan show was made aware of the dance moves that Elvis was going to do and the FCC or someone wanted a close camera angle on his upper body so the audience at home would not be able to see the dance moves. I believe the show ignored that and showed his entire body, which results in an FCC lawsuit. I could be wrong about the details but I recall there was significant controversy PRIOR to the show deciding to go with that camera angle. You can see that up until @1:13 they stay with a close shot and they INTENTIONALLY slowly pull back and then Elvis does his moves. Elvis also keeps laughing while singing because this fangirl thing was new to the world. He likely thought it was ridiculous how crazy they were going.
Agreed on everything except the "birth of rock and roll" part. This song, for example, was originally recorded by a black woman, Big Mama Thorton, and then they brought it to Elvis. It was common for white artists to crib from black music in order to mass commercialize it. I would say this performance was the birth of the first true pop star, but Elvis should not get credit for the birth of rock and roll.
After this appearance, At his next appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show: They cleaned up his look to be 'more conservative' and filmed him from the waist up.
oh I see you're really a true fan of Elvis and I can see you have a good taste in music, well I have been an Elvis fan since I was 10 I guess, even my mom is a huge fan of Elvis she makes me love Elvis so tell me which Elvis song do you love most?❤❤
@@noroyalty9348 Considering there is no such thing as "god", no one knows for sure, but it's fair to say that some of them still live and some of them have died.
Elvis was fantastic in the 50's, 1960 and then the 68 comeback, 1969 Las Vegas, and the 70's until near the end of his life. He was fantastic and beautiful in every decade. The King of music and the King of hearts.
He could have stepped into a time machine right then to 2021 and he’d still be a total boss. Wouldn’t have to change his look, moves, anything. He wouldn’t seem old fashioned or out dated, he’d immediately be the coolest person just as he was then.
The reason they are all going so crazy is because around this time what he is doing was high controversial and considered very sexual at the time (the way he was moving his hips that’s why they screamed so loud when he did it)
His pre-army performances were Elvis at his purest and happiest, which is why I absolutely love watching his performances over and over again! Talent, looks, charisma - it's a shame they tried to tamp this energy down, and make him 'family friendly' then send him off to the Army when they couldn't do it - imagine how much more his star would have shown if the Colonel would have encouraged his talent rather than suppress it!
It wasn't Colonel who suppressed him was it? I think that was just network TV and standards responding to the backlash among puritans who thought he was doing the devils work on their horny daughters.
Elvis was a patriot and willingly joined the military. He hated Communism, showed support for Richard Nixon during the Vietnam War and met with him at the White House. Elvis had no regrets about joining the military.
I saw the movie and I loved it and will go see it again. Elvis, like Parker said in the movie --"You are the greatest show on earth" with his first performance in Vegas.
Its so funny to think that his dancing was considered risque back then. Like, he's just dancing there, grooving. The movie was more intense than this. Modern dancing would horrify them XD
Yep, his Charisma, good looks, voice, and stage presence, and sexual appeal --- was awesome and off the charts. He's the only one and they will never be another one like him.
oh I see you're really a true fan of Elvis and I can see you have a good taste in music, well I have been an Elvis fan since I was 10 I guess, even my mom is a huge fan of Elvis she makes me love Elvis so tell me which Elvis song do you love most?❤
Always wonderful to see people thanking God like that. I was watching Keith Urban stuff a while back, and he does that a lot too....he is also a very humble person.
I think its fair to say that any entertainer that has been dead longer than he was alive and nearly 50 years latter, millions still sing his songs, dance, smile, cry and people are still mesmerized by him: He isn't a once in a lifetime but a once in history.
Right, I thought the movie was over the top when the girls were hollering at him, after watching the video, made me realize that the girls actually were crazy for him. They screamed the whole time while he was singing hound dog 😂 I can see why he the king
Elvis grew up dirt poor. He never forgot his roots. He once said that his generosity to others wasn't because he could. He was generous because he knew how it felt to have nothing and he never wanted anyone to feel that way. Very empathetic man and very humble. Truly God sent. I feel so anyway.
tell me just why he never produced anyone, any independant filmakers, any artist... people like such great authors, underground music,... nobody. I love Elvis anyway, but just why? I ask you because you said he was generous... yes he was, but never with art. Where the money went? he had a real empire, he could help young artists. Don't you think?
Cool! The uncensored version! First time I saw Elvis on Ed Sullivan, the bottom half of the screen was blocked, bc of Elvis' "suggestive movements". Thanx for sharing this little gem with us!
The bottom half wasn't "blocked" as you state , he just wasn't shown from the waist down. The cameras focused o n his upper part of his body. However on the second appearance a month later-the restriction was removed
It’s crazy to see this 66 years later and not think a thing about his dance moves and yet realize how they must have seen him then😆esp with the screaming girls, that’s the icing on the cake🤣
When he starts clapping and moving to the beat-it's fantastic. He was an amazing performer. The music was in in his soul and just couldn't be kept down.
Fun fact: He actually didn't like being called The King, because it mad whim uncomfortable. He said King of Rock and Roll was okay (although he'd debate you that Fats Domino was the one who deserved that title.) Because to him there was only one true King, Jesus Christ.
Sometimes I actually tear up watching his live performances. We don’t see artists like Elvis anymore, he had it all….authenticity, raw talent, genuine good looks, a sweet though tortured soul, no auto tuning, playful, fun and he loved his mama. Tragic he died so young. It would have been a privilege to see him grow old…he would have been such a handsome silver fox.
There will never be another one like him. I met him after his show at the Hilton International in 1972, soon after I moved to Vegas. I had just turned 18 and Needless to say I was star struck. He was so gorgeous, even more so in person and rather shy. Nothing like his persona on stage I was devastated when he died so young

I'm confident that no modern day soloist or band could ever reach the absolutely legendary heights or Elvis, nor could they ever reach his legendary status
82% of the total television viewing audience in America watched this live in 1956. Elvis on Ed Sullivan was a seismic cultural event. Like a meteor hitting the earth, the landscape of everything was somehow changed from that moment on.
You know what I hate, I'm a black man and I can not stand other black people saying elvis is a culture thief I CANT STAND IT. He grew up in a black neighbourhood he grew up in a poor neighbourhood just like Slim he would have been called white trash he had the same opportunities as his neighbours same influences but he was amazing. If you grow up in certain neighbourhoods that is what is going to influences you. If he grew up rich listening to opera would we have elvis today NO he was a product of his environment and I'm so grateful for his amazing music.
Elvis grew up in the white community just like all other whites. He graduated from high school in 1953. Schools in the south were segregated and not integrated until 1957 and most not enforced until the mid 60's.
Yes, well put. Thank you. I know people get angry that he got famous and made big money off of songs that were originally written and performed by great black musicians. But I do not blame Elvis for that. I blame the industry for wanting a white version of those incredible songs, including Hound Dog, of course. It's not a happy situation, and Elvis did try to give credit where it was due, most famously, I think to Fats Domino, saying HE was the King of Rock and Roll, not Elvis, at one of his Las Vegas shows where Fats Domino was in the audience. But I agree that he was not a "cultural thief." He heard something in the black music where he lived that compelled him much more than the white pop that was going on at the same time.
@@nspector The Industry for the most part wanted nothing to do with him. It was Sam Phillips who used to record black artists who recorded Elvis and Elvis touring city after city, state after state and then the infamous Tom Parker getting hold of his contract and became his manager that got him to go nationwide. Elvis took a lot of abuse by reporters, parents and even variety show hosts who had to have him on for ratings. Elvis stated that his music was a blend of country, blues and gospel. Yes, these were his influences as this is what he grew up around. The young people loved it, but nobody else did until he got drafted by the damn military. RCA then loved the money flowing in when they signed him to a contract.
@@nycsue Yes, you're right about most of the industry in the early days not wanting to do with him, Phillips being the one who was not put off by him sounding black. And you're also right about the way he was treated by reporters and most of the variety show hosts. I do think ultimately, though, that he was, controversy and all (or maybe *especially* because of the controversy over him), a marketable white artist who could bring regional and black music to a huge audience.
Elvis had such energy to move like he moved whilst singing and dancing. No one is like him by a long shot. He was unique. That is why he is remembered so many years after passing out.
