Elvis was raised in a ghetto and his family was very poor. Even after they moved to Memphis, he lived in the projects until he made his first recording at 19 and started making enough money to move his parents to a house of their own. He never forgot where he came from. You would love the video of "Don't from rehearsals 1970 LasVegas/ Resync with Don't with the Philharmonic Orchestra". Anything from 1968 Special is 🔥 Love your reactions to Elvis. Thanks!!❤❤

What ghetto did Elvis grow up in? He grew up in a 1 room house in Tupelo, but it was not a ghetto

So he knows very well from a poor life in a ghetto. So lyrics had a meaning to him . Hard cycle of life.

@@mvdh877 after his father went to prison they lived in the projects. He was in prison a few years and it wasn’t until he got out that they moved to Memphis and still lived in projects then. Googles your friend research it.

Elvis record label and Colonel Parker didn’t want him to do this song, but Elvis was raised in the Ghetto and felt he maybe could help by singing this song, Elvis never forgot where he came from and always helped others. They didn’t want him doing anything about social injustice, but Elvis wouldn’t give it up. It was presented to Sammy Davis Jr. and he turned it down, he said he had never experienced what the song was about, but told them Elvis had and that’s how he ended up recording it.

And it is important to note that the song was written by country singer/songwriter Mac Davis from Lubbock Texas.....

You would absolutely LOVE "Trying To Get To You" from the '68 Comeback Special. He is wearing a leather suit...so hot! Also....from the same special...Elvis singing a tribute to MLK..."If I Can Dream". He is wearing a white suit in that song. The man was way ahead of his time. Will never be another one like Elvis.

Mac Davis wrote it sweetie but I can tell you that Elvis used to sneak out and watch through the windows of the clubs and was drawn to the music and touched by the things going on around him as a child of the Era. That's why he bought his mama a pink Cadillac

One of Elvis great talents was that he sang a song with so much feeling that he made you feel it too. He could sing ANYTHING to perfection, rockabilly, rock n roll, country, blues pop, christmas music, Gospel and even semi opera. And you put that together with his looks, mannerism, stage performance, clothing style and you have the GOAT. Hell even his hairstyle (from the 50') was voted as the most iconic hairstyle! Also I once read a book about Charisma and the writer used Elvis as the prime example.

He was advised not to do this song. It was the 60's and he had his way of telling the story. There were times when a venue refused to let his black back up singers in and he'd refuse to play. They let him in! Best artist ever..

Elvis wasn’t a song writer. He was a singer and the most underrated music producer in history.

Another song along the same theme is If I Can Dream, it was meant to honor MLK and JFK..Elvis sang it at the end of his 68 Comeback special. Its a beautiful song and you can tell it meant a lot to Elvis. A lot of my favorite Elvis music is his gospel music.. You Gave Me a Mountain, How Great Thou Art, are just two of my favorites but there are many more too.

Elvis started singing about the REAL LIFE ISSUES coming from where HE came from, the GHETTO. In his case not Chicago but EAST TUPELO, SHAKERAG, and MEMPHIS DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND SEGREGATION. Elvis first grew up in a SHACK with no running water or electricity. So poor that his TWIN BROTHER that died at birth was buried in a SHOEBOX, that is all the Presleys could afford to do. THAT is POVERTY. Not even 10 years later rap music was born speaking on the SAME issues. Grandmaster Flash played parties and collaborated with rappers such as Kurtis Blow and Lovebug Starski. In the late 1970s, he formed his own group. The original lineup consisted of Cowboy (Keef Cowboy), Melle Mel (Melvin Glover), and Kidd Creole (Nathaniel Glover), and the ensemble went by the name "Grandmaster Flash & the 3 MCs". Cowboy created the term hip hop. Elvis innovated in EVERY DECADE he lived. He had a short career and even shorter life, but what HE DID with his extremely limited time, he changed the world and made success int he music business MUCH MORE DIVERSE.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935, to Vernon and Gladys Presley. Born in a two-room house built by his father, grandfather and uncle, Elvis was one of twin brothers born to the Presleys. His brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn. Elvis grew up in Tupelo surrounded by his extended family including his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Financially, times were hard on Vernon and Gladys, and they had to move out of the house where Elvis was born when he was only a few years old for lack of payment. Vernon and Gladys worked various jobs while in Tupelo and moved several different times during the thirteen years they resided in Mississippi.

Viewers of this video should not get caught up in the (subtle) movements by Elvis when reacting to this particular song. The message is the most important thing about it, not about how it may look to you/me. It is about the sad, stark reality of living in poverty for many in our country-no matter what their ethnicity or color.

Having read some angry A.A. commenters, and not to be overly pedantic, but this needs to be made very clear. "Ghetto" is not slang for "Po black folk".....The term is German. Ghettos were 1st used as population control centers. Nazis would force 100s of 1000s of Jews into the least developed, worst kept section of a city. Then, just for the privilege of still being able to breathe, they imposed extremely oppressive rules upon them. In 1960s America, those (racially universal) who lived in what was originally dubbed "The Projects" adopted the term "The Ghettos".....Modern A.As, God loves ya and so do I. But, you need to get over yourselves. Suffering and poverty strikes at the heart of every racial group. And not everything is specific to you.
