As a musicologist, and after 30 years of study, I have found Elvis Presley to be the greatest vocalist of any kind, ever. And, when I began this journey of study, that was not my thought. However, after one goes through his entire catalogue and realizes that this man sings more genres (even semi-operatic music) at a level of exceptionalism in all genres and finding no one else who has ever done the same, I must proclaim him honestly as the GOAT!

This is one of my favorite gospel songs and the other one is "You'll Never Walk Alone". He could sing pretty much all genres of music.

It's Elvis first time on t.v.. this is an epic performance. The birth of rock and roll. The first show nobody knew who he was by the 5th show well you be the judge. This concert was a really big deal back in 1973. It was shown live all over the world via satellite. Elvis was at the top of his game at this time hard to believe he had only four years left.

Notice in a few shots Elvis has a band-aid on his ring finger...fans had a habit of trying to take his rings when he bent down to shake their hands. the band-aid prevented that.

I relate to this, unfortunatley. I fought in a war, lost a son, lost my wife, lost my house, lost my money, was homeless for many years.......................................I am old now, and I am still trying to climb up that hill, it is hard.

This is actually my all time favorite Elvis performance, and the song makes me cry every time. This song was covered several times before Elvis did it, and the other versions are no where near as great as this one. He definitely added a lot to this song, and he made it a masterpiece. A fantastic arrangement, and great vocal phrasing. Just genius. To realize just how brilliant he was, you have to listen to the other versions which were also hits.

Marty Robbins wrote and recorded this song. Frankie Laine made it a hit in the summer of 1969. When Elvis has spoken of the song, though Robbins wrote and recorded it, he speaks of it as Frankie Laine's song. I don't remember if Laine changed any of the lyrics, but Elvis alters some of the words to greater effect. Laine speaks rather than sings for a good part of the thing. Man, every time I hear this by Elvis, that wonderful voice of his hits those notes with remarkable power.

It tickles me to death to see young dudes like you respond to Elvis all these decades later. He really put the message of a song across, with his beautiful voice, and what he did with it - and did with his whole body and all the other performers who were part of his show. There are many other recordings of his passionate singing, and I, for one, have not tired of listening to them for the past 60+ years.

This concert was aired live all over the pacific rim. Incidentally after the concert the musicians and Elvis came back on stage and recorded 5 more songs, all performed live. These were used as bumpers for the u s showing of the concert. If you listen carefully on the outtakes you can hear the musicians griping about performing in the dark.
