"Organic" is the right word for what Elvis felt in his soul. Never really bought the narrative that he "stole" music. He covered songs of different genres, but he definitely had soul from the get-go. Though I grew up during the time he was alive, I only learned about the kind of man he was in the past year. I have a deeper appreciation for him now. Good points being made in this reaction. That was a GREAT reaction guy's, very interesting chat, uncle's a very wise man. And yes ORGANIC is a perfect description of how Elvis evolved, and unlike what many still believe, he melded all his knowledge of music from his surroundings, church, and what he heard on the radio...country, gospel, pop, even opera, blue's, bluegrass, ballads. You can hear it ALL in his vocals and style, he was unique and brought it all together and changed the world. Here is a true story elvis hairdresser who was very close to him as they have so much in common he was in Elvis room before one of his Vegas shows . Elvis was so sick lying in bed with a very high fever About 3 hours before show time parker came in the room asked were he was they said he is not feeling well lying in bed He walked up to his hairdresser and said the only thing that is important is that man gets on stage tonight I don’t care if he is dying he has to be on that stage .

This movie is gonna be EPIC! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Baz made it clear in his interview that "black music and culture is not a side note or a footstep in Elvis'story. It's the whole canvas. You can't tell the real Elvis story without the black influence". Baz just yesterday posted pics of the girls portraying Elvis' black backup singers, The Sweet Inspirations on Instagram and one of them posted that this movie is gonna be a historic classic!

Thank you for pointing out what many have overlooked about Elvis musical roots. His love of gospel followed him throughout his life. The Col. Who was a carnival man and saw dollar signs with Elvis. He left Hank Snow who at the time was a big act. The singing in the trailer is a mix of Butler and Elvis voice. Also Remember Elvis would give new cars to total strangers because he knew what it was like to have nothing. He was charitable to a fault. He never looked for publicity like entertainers do today. We hope they capture the human side of the man behind the glasses.
In 1974, "Colonel" Parker made *more money* than Elvis. Elvis did not even own his own music anymore. Elvis never liked the business side of it and gave a lot back to his fans. But he should have payed attention. It *IS* Elvis singing the later Elvis after 1968. Butler would never sing "Unchained Melody" just like Elvis with the same voice.
Love this trailer. Hopefully people will be able to see who Elvis really was and what he stood for. Should put to rest a lot of false rumours. Austin Butler gives a great portrayal of Elvis. Great reaction. Watch the interview that Baz Luhrmann did with Elvis's childhood best friend Sam Bell. There will be no further discussion after you hear what Sam says about Elvis. It truly was organic and Elvis was the extreme minority in the neighborhood. What you had in Parker was a very experienced older man that paired up with a naive southern gentleman style of a man that honored his word no matter what. However, even with all the talent Elvis had, the Colonel was essential to being who Elvis was or became. What we heard was Elvis singing in this clip.
@@OverandOutChief1I just saw an article where Baz Lurhman said that all of the songs Elvis recorded in the 50’s is Butler singing and I thought Those two songs were originally recorded in 1956 and 1957. He also said that the music from the 60’s was Butlers voice mixed with Elvis himself. Anything from the 70’s was just Elvis himself. I guess if the want those two songs to sound exactly like the Comeback special versus his earlier recordings they would use Elvis’/Butler voice mixed together since it’s the 60’s, but if they are showing him in the 50’s recording those songs it will be Butler singing.
@@reneebush2399 Interesting. Heartbreak Hotel and Jailhouse were from the 68 special (he is dressed in the leather as well when they are playing the songs). I have the audio recordings and that is Elvis. I will have to listen for Butler if he is indeed on those recordings.
Thank you for your comments about the importance of Elvis' organic relationship to the music around him. Other RU-vid channels have charged him with" appropriation" but his culture was the poverty of a white a boy straddling the color lines in Memphis. Music doesn't belong to a color, it belongs to the people who experience it and are transformed by it.
That's very true about how Leonard Chess handled things with a lot of those Blues Legends. Side note - Soul music great, Billy Paul, was mentioned in your reaction. So I have Billy Paul / Elvis story. He and Elvis were friendly with one another. They both served in the Army at the same time. Billy had asked Elvis to join his band at that time but Elvis politely declined. (He had already committed himself to being strictly a soldier and not doing anything musically related until after his discharge from Army.) Billy spoke very highly of Elvis and even defended Elvis against slanderous made up rumors that were not true. He said his biggest regret was not long before Elvis passed away Billy was in Memphis to do a show and thought about dropping by Elvis's home to say hello. But his time constraints at the time he figured didn't have time to visit Elvis at home but he was thinking there would always be another chance to visit his old friend. He regretted that Elvis passed away shortly after so Billy never got his chance for that last visit with Elvis. I was always such a huge Billy Paul fan. I thought it was awesome to learn that he thought of Elvis as a friend. And yes his manager was an "Opportunist". Their relationship became a cautionary Tale in the music industry for other artists and their managers. Most from the industry agree the colonel really was more a "promoter than a manager". Managers (good ones) have their clients best interests at heart and allow them to have artistic freedom. This is where the colonel failed miserably. He was great at business promoting and making money. But not great at asking Elvis ..."what do YOU want to do?" Elvis wanted to do serious films, He wanted to do collaboration music, albums with other artists, He wanted to do TV shows, Wanted to tour the world ... Wanted to do many things that the colonel was known to always come up with reasons to tell Elvis "No". Some people say Elvis died not just from pill addiction but from a broken heart, because artistically speaking, he felt stifled. His soul felt robbed as his career went on so did Elvis's health problems. And some people close to Elvis point directly at the colonel has responsible for artistically undermining Elvis and causing him great private heartache ... hence the reason many in the industry over the years use Colonel as an example of what type of manager *not to be*. Great reaction gentleman. As soon as I saw the opening of film showing Elvis as a kid at Gospel Tent Revivals, I consider it a great Omen for this film. It's a sign that the director actually cares enough to want to show a side of Elvis that so much have history has overlooked. Looks very interesting.

Elvis wad first influenced by AFRICAN SPIRITUALS ( back in the day called "Negro Spirits") via the African church Dance and Songs. I'm a pro touring and recording drummer. Really lucky. But honestly the most joy I get playing music is when I serve in my church. Believe what you want, but I feel closest to Jesus Christ when I'm playing music for Him and helping people to know Him. And I know a lot of fellow touring cats who serve in church when they're not on the road. Playing secular music to a packed house is great, but when you see people in the congregation crying because they're feeling the Holy Spirit, it hits a lot different than a paid gig. I believe that as misguided as Elvis became, he was always serving in his own way. His spirit was always with Jesus Christ. God bless you both.
Col. Parker was actually an illegal alien and never let Elvis tour outside the United States because he was afraid that he couldn't get back into the states if Elvis toured Europe or Japan , so yes he did hold him back, another example is the Elvis was asked to costar with John Wayne in True Grit, but because Elvis's name would not get top billing he told the studio no and the part went to singer Glen Campbell , same thing with A Star is Born with Barbra Streisand the part went to singer Kris Kristofferson. So yes Col. Parker held him back in many many ways. Love Tom Hanks in this role and if you find video of Tom Parker, Hanks sounds just like him. And the singing park of Austin ...he sang all of the early songs, and the later Elvis songs were a mix of Elvis and Austin . Fantastic, insightful reaction, gentlemen! Parker was definitely a hustler, not so much a good manager. His star far outstripped him as his career progressed, and Parker knew it. But he needed Elvis and he kept him from leaving because, by then, his gambling addiction was so far gone he needed Elvis to pay for it. The only thing that mattered to Parker was money, he couldn't care less about art and how Elvis felt about it. And Elvis knew that too. I think there was a lot of love and respect between them, but that 50/50 split was ridiculous and Elvis ended up suffering for those terrible business decisions and the lack of care for his creative interests in the end. He was nearly broke when he died.
@@ikewp901 You could be right, but there's a direct quote from Elvis during one of his shows where he wants to introduce Parker to his audience, and he says something like, "I'd like to introduce you to my manager, Colonel Parker. I really love him." But he wasn't there 😕 and Elvis said something about how he was probably at the roulette table or something.

"Things aren’t always black or white…there’s a whole range of grey in the middle… and sometimes gratitude, loyalty, and love are responsible for all those shades in between." Spot on, Parker was good for introducing Elvis to the world, after the 50s he held him back in many ways. Trouble was Elvis was a extremely loyal person and couldn't bring himself to fire Parker, they shook hands a gentleman's agreement and that was Elvis's word, that was that!
My main men Mojo and Uncle Ted! This should prove a very interesting biopic, though I have the feeling the reviews will be mixed. Parker cost Elvis and himself a fortune on notable fronts. One, signing the long term movie deal kept him from touring revenue from 1961-68, Parker's own status as an illegal Immigrant kept Elvis from doing shows and appearances outside of the U.S., and not allowing Presley to sign with one of the two major music publishers (ASCAP and BMI) cost them additional money from royalties Elvis would have accrued for songs he was listed as author or co-author on. In my estimation, on the whole Parker did the King's career more harm than good.
So many musicians focus on their music and not so much on money, and often get taken for a ride by their managers. By all accounts that's what happened to Elvis. Elvis was a naive country boy from a poor family, who grew up around a lot of good people, so he likely couldn't imagine that someone as important as the colonel would not be the same. Hope this movie does Elvis justice.

She wears a black leather jumpsuit, and Pricilla Presley hair too. Its her voice makes this cover spectacular and the way she slows the song that makes it so special. The different voice Hanks is apparently using for Parker doesn't really bother me. To me this film will either sink or swim based on Austin Butler's performance, and Baz Luhrmann's direction. I would rather Hanks' have done the voice closer to Parker's, but if they aforementioned other 2 are great, Hanks' rather strange vocal interpretation of Parker's voice really won't matter. This will be the first time in a movie theater in about 4 years for me, so clearly my interest level is high. We'll see. By the way, Salisbury Steak is the meat I think the senior gentleman was referring to.

What I love about this movie is that the did not shy away from Elvis roots or the fact that a lot of his influences came from black artists. Some biopics tend to gloss over that fact but this one did not. They also presented his story in a way that lets the viewer decide on their own, how they feel about that. I think it was beautifully done.
Finally! A movie befitting THE KING ELVIS PRESLEY? Let's hope so. He certainly deserves it. Can't wait to see if the movie lives up to the legend. His momma "the way you sing is God given so there can't be nothing wrong with it!" Touche Mrs Presley, Touche!

I attended a Pentecostal church in my early teen years, and yes the dancig and all of that, would definetly classify as Pentecostal. I agree Parker saw Elvis as a meal ticket, you will see that in the movie. That "man" imo was a weasel that drained Elvis,severly, financially.

Colonel parker was a genius a marketing genius he never let elvis take a back seat to anyone he put elvis by himself because he wanted people to come see an elvis and elvis only not elvis and another singer by doing this it made elvis untouchable.
Capitalism doesn't necessarily make you a thief and a liar. We didn't even know the colonel's real name. Elvis wanted to travel but couldn't because the colonel couldn't get a passport. He lied about Elvis having security issues and pretended to be concerned about his safety. Austin is awesome and definitely deserves an oscar. As it was told, Elvis' voice was blended with his.
People do not understand that Col Parker was a genius promoter! Despite his faults, he got Elvis contracts and appearances that other promoters wouldn’t have been able to have got. He definitely propelled him to ranks pf super stardom unseen by any other Artist!

Parker may have been Dutch, but he did not have a heavy accent like Tom Hanks portrays in this movie (plenty of clips of him talking on RU-vid). Most actors who portrayed Elvis made the same mistake that Austin Butler makes: they talk with a deep voice that is more reminiscent of Elvis impersonators. Just look up Elvis interview clips and you'll hear he actually had a pretty high voice when he talked. And nobody who ever played Elvis was as handsome as he was, that is just impossible. Elvis was born in a 1 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. He always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. But he was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.
"Chopped Steak" is ground beef smothered in gravy. Parker did impede Elvis' career since due to legal issues Parker didn't dare leave the U.S. because he wouldn't be able to return. Therefore, Parker refused to ever allow Elvis to tour overseas. Parker also pushed Elvis into a brutal movie making schedule and tour/appearance schedule in Las Vegas in order to pay his gambling debts which took a major toll on Elvis' health leading to his early death.
Uncle Ted may be talking about Country Fried Steak. It is usually ground beef or ground veal, or even a veal cutlet, that is breaded in a frying batter, and then fried in a frying pan. Sometimes, it is referred to as "Chicken Fried Steak". I LOVE Country Fried Steak dinners at Perkins Restaurants and IHOP Restaurants and Bob Evans Restaurants.

The Colonel most definitely had a negative effect on Elvis. He didn't want him to do the 68 special and Elvis went against his wishes for the first and last time. It was a HUGH success. He wouldn't let Elvis play in serious movies. Barbara Strisand wanted him to star with her in "A Star is Born" and he said no! Why Elvis was so loyal is beyond me. He could have been a singer and movie star. The Colonel blew his money on gambling!
The colonel was terrible for Elvis. He had a 50/50 contract which is unheard of, puts Elvis in movie contracts for years without doing live concerts. The movies were terrible but still made money and that’s all the Colonel cared about. When Elvis did return to live concerts he signed Elvis to Vegas contracts requiring him to do two shows a night sometimes 3 at seven days a week for a month straight also unheard of. The colonel turn down some big movie rolls such as Co-starring with Barbara Streisand in a star is born. On top of the Vegas contracts the Colonel would schedule concert tours where Elvis would do an afternoon show and an evening show . And Elvis never did a world tour because his manager was not a legal American citizen so the colonel would not allow Elvis to go overseas without him and since the colonel would have quite a bit of trouble getting back into the country the world tours never happened
