See updated video without background music linked in 'i' card above or check my channel. Thank you for the feedback.
These are the top ten changes I've made to setup my Olympus EM1 MKII cameras for use in wedding and portrait photography.
1. Back button focus : Custom Functions (CF/gear icon) Menu - A1 - AEL/AFL - Set S-AF to mode 3 - Set C-AF to mode 4
2. ISO/White Balance mapped to front button: CF Menu (gear icon) - B - Button Function - function button - Set to ISO/WB
3. CAF mapped to Lever: CF Menu (gear icon) - Tab B - FN Lever Settings - Set to mode 2
(AF settings are now sticky to the physical lever positions on the back of the camera and will remain where you leave them. In position 1 I leave S-AF set and in position 2 I leave C-AF)
4. Flash mode viewing S-OVF mapped to FN2: CF Menu (gear icon) - B - Button Function - FN2 and set to S-OVF
5. Card Slots Set to Dual independent (arrow down) with card 1 set to RAW and card 2 set to JPG: Camera Menu 1 - Camera Icon with Shaded Diamond - 1 Set to Raw - 2 Set to LN
6. Image Review Off - Wrench Menu - Rec View -Off
7. MF Clutch Off: CF Menu (gear icon) - A3 - Inoperative
8. Picture Mode Set to set to Muted and -1 Contrast -1 Saturation: Camera 1 Menu - Picture Mode - Muted - Info and then set contrast and saturation
9. Flicker Reduction Off: CF Menu (gear icon) - D2 - Flicker Reduction -Off
10. Auto ISO Warmth set to off: CF Menu (gear icon) - G - Auto ISO Warmth - Off

Excellent videos Joe. More please!! I've been using the EM 1 for a year now and still fine tuning it, so it's refreshing to find additional views and ideas from someone who knows his craft inside out (and not from 'equipment reviewers' who just compare specifications and think they are therefore experts).

Since I got my camera a couple of months ago, I haven't played with the settings for a while. Now, I got firmware 2.0 and trying to dig into the features, I just found your video. This video is tremendously helpful. Thank you very much and I wish to more of this kind. Oh, I already have subscribed!

Thanks, Joseph for a very informative video. I just got an EM1 MKII, having switched from FF Canon and immediately wanted to setup back button focus. Your video showed me how quickly and easily. I also changed the grid, RAW and ISO settings right out of the gate. Looking forward to watching your other videos.

Bingo Joseph! Thanks for being so patient with me. Also got firmware to update. Problem I had was how the mac worked, I've recently switched from windows to mac too.

I'm just getting into the Olympus system, having shot FF Nikon. I'm keeping the D810 bodies and glass though, just in case I have a job come up where they are better tools. I suspect though that the EM1 bodies will be seeing a lot more use. The first EM1 arrives tomorrow, so this was very useful - thanks! My setup would be similar to yours so extremely useful not to have to spend 3 months of fiddling around just to get in the ballpark.

Thanks for great tips!!! I've had Oly Digital, Oly 3/4 and Oly micro 3/4 systems. I just got this camera and learning curve is tad steep even given my experience. I can't imagine starting from scratch or from another camera. Unfortunately the toggle switch in the back was in No. 2, and I couldn't get aperature or shutter to work. I thought I would go crazy. A simple thing.....but this camera was not "go" out of the box. Unlike my other cameras. I guess you really have to be a pro and have the commitement to get this baby to really work. Thank God, I didn't have any projects when I got this camra.

Hi Joseph, Just quick note to thank you for this and the other videos on your Olympus kit. I have found them informative and helpful. I have been an Olympus shooter since the four thirds days but switched to Nikon FF due to hight ISO performance, heading back to Olympus as I don't find the Nikon as comfortable as my current EM-1 MkI (hope to soon upgrade to MkII).

I Share most of your settings, even I’m not in wedding business, but there is one I saw you have different than me, it is RESET LENS. This parameter when set to ON, force the lens to start focusing from a different point than the last one you used. The issue is that this happens not only when the camera is turned on, but also when it cames from iddle status. When you are waiting for something to happen there, it causes the lens to start hunting the position and missing a precious time to catch up the moment.

The link appears as an {i) icon right at the beginning of the video in the top right corner. This was a response to viewers who didn't like the background music of the first version. I tried to title the newer one as honestly as possible as "new version without music". My apologies if you wasted any time misunderstanding my intention.

Thanks for the great tips, I have included many of your customisations in my own camera. However, I have one query regarding SAF and CAF. Do you really need a dedicated switch if you have back button focus set up? I was under the impression that one press locked the focus to a single focal distance.Then to initiate CAF you just have to hold the button down continuously. Then to return to SAF you just release the button. press again and then release when you have focus confirmation.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Ok, I've gone back and forth with this over the years and with the OMD EM1MKII the trouble I've had is that in dark environments like ceremonies and receptions the C-AF will give me a false lock (green box) a good percentage of the time when I'm trying to get accurate focus on a face that isn't moving. If I use S-AF it almost never misses if I get a confirmation of a lock. Now obviously if the subject moving/walking I use C-AF but for still subjects I just find I get more keepers using S-AF. I do get what you're saying in that if you use C-AF and BFF you can just release the AF button and the camera will be "locked" and if that is working for you a high percentage of the time, that's awesome. I will say the nice thing about the way I have the camera set up is that I can go between modes so fast with the camera up to my eye that I never feel like it's a burden.

Sorry to bother you but I bet your tired of answering this question. I got it to change function lever button from mode 1 and 2 single autofocus and continous, but the speed of the shutter on the super control panel does not change - Single autofocus for mode 1 and sequential low for mode 2. On when changing to mode 1 single autofocus the sequential low shutter remains. Is this suppose to happen?

Great video Joseph! One quick noob question though; Why are your camera set to sRGB instead of Adobe RGB?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Well, the world is slowly moving toward being more color space aware but sRGB is still the standard for everything web and mobile and my lab does a great job with sRGB as well so my whole color workflow stays in sRGB for ease and consistency. The only time I dabble with larger spaces is when I'm printing in my studio where I'm applying paper profiles from the larger color gamuts and even then I usually use the ProPhoto RGB space instead. Also remember raw files can be developed into any space you want so you've lost nothing if you archive those.
@MGraslund
@MGraslund 6 лет назад
Thanks for your really quick answer! Much appreciated. I´ve totally lost track about the fact that "all the colors" stays in the raws, so now I see the much bigger picture. Thanks again Joseph for clarifying!

Do you updated your camera to the last fimware (2.0)? How it works the smaller points for you? And if you shoot only with Olympus pro lens, is not the easy way to use the "L-Fn" button from the lens to change the single point autofocus to c-af when that button is pushed? Do you use that button? Thanks!
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Hi Alin, yes I did update to the new firmware and yes, I do love the new smaller AF points, they seem to be able to really pinpoint focus with the 1.2 lenses in a way the larger points could sometimes struggle with. I do know some people that prefer the L-fn button for changing focus settings, my problem is that it's too easy for me in while I'm shooting for that button to get pressed accidentally so I prefer the lever. But that's the great part about these cameras right, there is enough customization to make it work for everyone's shooting style?

My apologies Edwin, I did miss rotating the clip from the last segment, by the time I caught the mistake it was already online and if I replace it I lose all the comments, views etc. I will do by best not to repeat that error in the future. I did also summarize all the customizations I made in the comments, if that helps.

Valuable hints, but why this noise in the background? Like in a disco! I can hardly concentrate on the words.
@garry-garaidhbryant-obriai6700
Old photog here, seems leaving out a step or two on s-af & c-af. When get to the function lever settings & scroll over there are two files; Fn lever Function (mode 2) & Switch Function (off). I switch to mode 1 & press ok, nothing happens. Does the lever need to be set on 1 or 2 before pressing ok? What is mode 3 about? I press ok on 2 but it reads after as MF. Switch to 1 it reads C-AF tr (I like this for sports) How do I get 1 to 2, and 1 reading s-af? Ok, got 2 to read C-AF tr, but 1 has up/down arrow only with 'off, mode 1, 2, 3.' How do I set 2 to S-AF?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Garry-Garaidh Bryant-O'Briain Once you have the FN lever set to mode 2 the AF settings are sticky for lever position 1 and 2. If you go to lever position 2 and set it to CAF it will remain that way until you change it... same for lever position 1 and S-AF or whatever you like. Does that help?
@garry-garaidhbryant-obriai6700
No. position 1 still reads CAF-tr. I want position 2 to read this, but position 1 reads CAF-tr and I want SAF. Is SAF the third symbol found when on mode 2, scroll and there are three symbols with check marks. Does turning off check marks only leaving third do SAF?
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
OK let's back up for a second, under the gear menu, tab B, have you set the '[Camera Icon] Fn Lever Settings' to Mode 2 which reads: ' Changes AF mode/.... The target is selectable.' ? If yes then set the physical lever to setting 1 on the camera and go to super control panel and set the AF to S-AF then go to setting 2 on the physical lever and set the AF to your preferred C-AF settings. Those settings for the physical lever positions are now sticky so they will be wherever you leave them. Did we get it?

I cannot get the Fn Lever (1/2) to switch between S-AF and C-AF. Instead it switches between S-AF and MF when I set it to mode 2. How can I get it to work the way you describe in this video?.
@JosephEllisPhotographer
@JosephEllisPhotographer 6 лет назад
Doug Chamberlin The mode 2 makes the AF settings sticky, go to mode 2 and use the super control panel to set it to CAF and then whenever you go back that’s where it will be unless you change it

How is it possible to customize and use dual dial to move horizontally and vertically the focus point. I dislike that only point by point move is possible with the pad
@howardcurtiss5048
@howardcurtiss5048 6 лет назад
Marc Kogel try programming "AF Area Select" to Fn1 button (convenient to dual dials you intend to use). Once programmed pressing Fn1 will display the AF point matrix which you can then move the AF point to desired position via dual dials. Hope this helps.

I love your tutorials Joseph but due to a hearing impairment if there is music the voice becomes hard to understand for me. I tend to lipread but of course, I lose bits when you switch to camera views. You have a good clear voice and background music adds nothing to a tutorial, could you please consider reducing the music level on new videos, or better still, don't add one. Thanks buddy

Hi Bob, sorry for the trouble, I had background music in a few of my early videos but stopped pretty quickly since many folks also found it distracting. Hopefully the newer stuff is easier to understand. Best, Joe
