I work at a LSB in Mississauga Canada and ive caught our lead mechanic singing about the bike he's working on to the tune of hacks and bodges a number of times. It's one of our favorite parts of the show.
Embarrassing moment that also relates to last weeks hardtail poll: was about to start a ride on my trusty hardtail when I ran into a few guys at the trailhead on full sus' with 170mm travel. They told me I couldn't ride those trails on a hardtail and that I should stick to the fireroads. Frustrated, I went to buy a coffee as they began their ride. Warm coffee in me and feeling better, I hit the trails ten minutes later only to catch those pathetic full sus riders walking down a techy section as I zoomed by!
As with pretty much anything in life, the person matters more than the equipment. If you know what I mean..... Back in the mid to late 90's a friend of mine rode a Honda CB650 Nighthawk from the 80's, hardly cutting edge technology for the time. But he would overtake all those one-piece clad posers on their sports bikes as soon as the road got twisty. They'd blast past on the straights but he'd piss all over them in the corners. Talent > gear every time.
When the bike shop was fixing my dads bike they gave him a 10,000 dollar trail bike to use until they were done. I was practicing my bunny hops over a log I put on the road and my back wheel hit the log and I went over my handlebars and slid across the road but luckily I only scratched the dropper post remote and brake leavers.
That red hardtail they couldn't identify but gave a SUPER NICE was a Specialized Fuse. I have one in lime green I've been trying to get into the Bike Vault for a while now.
I run about 15psi front 18psi rear for wet/muddy conditions, and about 18psi front 20-22psi rear for dry/dusty conditions. But if I'm going to be riding bigger jumps I go with 25psi (max riding pressure on my current tires) front and rear to avoid hitting the rim. I'm seriously looking at getting some plus size compatible padding. I know CushCore is supposedly coming out with some soon.
I've got lots to say these week lol I watched the Matt Jones edit a few days ago and it really is amazing that back flip to double footplant blew my mind totally he lands so softly and with such precision it's unreal!
MOST EMBARASSING BIKE: Road bike. Here’s why. Quite few years ago I signed up for the No Baloney Century ride in Lebanon, PA. I loaded up my bike and headed east. About a half hour later I realized that I forgot the bike’s front wheel. Since I was on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I had to keep driving east until I finally got to the next exit. I exited, reentered and drove home to get the wheel. I then got back on the Turnpike, and drove about an hour or so until I got to the venue. It looked empty. I drove around for another half hour assuming that I was at the wrong park. Nope. I eventually figured out that I got my dates mixed up and I was there a week too late. I drove home about $20 poorer from all the road tolls, $50 in gas money and another $50 for the registration fee. Ask not for whom the road bike tolls, it doesn’t toll for free.
A lot of super nice awardees in the bike vault this week! The unknown red hardtail is a Specialized Fuse, I think. It has those diamond chainstays. Building myself a hardtail as well, but it's taking longer than I'd like.
My embarrassing moment is when my friend and I went to snow summit bike park for the weekend and tried to hit a log roll on one of the main trails. Unfortunately when my friend attempted the feature his tire slipped off and he ended up going over the handlebars right in the middle of the trail. The embarrassing part is that Aaron Gwin and his friend were riding right behind us that day and he ran into my friend laying in the middle of the trail when he came around the corner. lol
Hi GMBN. I have an idea for a presenter challenge. It's a race between presenters it starts with them waking up in each other's house and have to get all the other presnenters gear ready and load the car ready for the trails . they must get to the trails and race in whatever the other person has packed for them. Scoring is possible based on things packed and who wins the race . It could even be a few races ,trials, DH Enduro. I hope to see something like this. Many thanks for all the awesome content cheers cam lesley
Half the bikes I have ever ridden or owned were of this category and embarrassment is the last feeling you could feel...especially when you ride em like you stole em
I've got the Cannondale to end all cannondales. My first carbon build and it's def super nice. I'll try and submit it this week. Also, I look forward to your show everyday you guys are by far the best mountain biking channel on RU-vid and my favorite place for mountain bike related anything. thanks and keep it up
At the beginning of the spring this year, I was so excited to be out on the trails but I wasn't on par with some of the challenges that I had in mind. I was powering up this climb, made a bad line choice and ended up bucking myself over the bars, and tackled the front tire with my shoulder. I ended up with a bruise on my shoulder that matched the tread on the tire. I have a dope photo of it as a memory.
I love a hardtail. It is all I have ever ridden. I began racing in 1985 in Cairns on fully rigid, stopped racing in 1995. Took up mountain bike racing again in 2017 and bought a hard tail becasue it was the best value.
I was riding with a group of people. One of the guys missed a bridge and landed in the water in a ditch. I turned around to laugh at him and when I turned back around to keep riding there was a tree in front of me that I hit head-on. It was a pretty funny and embarrassing time
My embarrassing moment: I was chatting with my friends while doing a track stand. Some girls were passing by and i just tilted over. Everyone including me just laughed so hard. Like how often do you see someone fall of their bike while stationery.
One time I was with my family and I was in Ireland and I was really getting into it and riding to fast and there was a lot of braking bumps. My hands slipped off the bars and I went flying over a berm 10 feet into a bush. I was so stunned my brother had to pull me out of the bush.
Pulling a wheelie in front of 3 cool girls on my first skateboard @1984 and the bearings had disintegrated allowing a wheel to slip off over the outer Nut and me going otb .
red mystery bike in the bike vault was a specialized Fuze. last years model, they changed the frame for the new ones, but it for sure deserved the super nice, awesome bike.
me and a friend were riding along right next to a river. i stopped and tried to put my foot down on the river bank but missed and fell off the bike into the river. both my friend and a nan walking past with his dog laughed alot.
I had an OTB crash at Llandegla the first time I ever went, I was lying on the floor in a fair amount of pain with my nose bleeding, but as I rolled over and went to get up I seen a group of about 20 other guys just watching me... I had concussion for a week but still rode the whole day!
I wheelied into the window of a hairdressers. I just stared at the 5 people looking right at me from inside then cycled off like nothing had happened.😂
I just got my first full sus, but hardtails rock! The trails around where I live are very slow and technical and they are often easier to ride with my nimble hardtail, than the longer and slacker full sus.
Re: embarrassing moments, I once went out as a teenager and did like a 30/40 mile bike ride. I pulled into my estate thinking I was Jason McRoy and went to send it off a kerb (to the praise and admiration of all those looking). Failed massively crashed, landing on my elbow, I felt rather faint/sick and I still have the scar on my elbow 22 years later.
I carry a rake with the poky bit at the top my mum asked if it was safe i said yep then it swung into a tree then pushed me onto my back weel and I got stuck under the sadle
Was riding at Alifia River State park in Florida, USA. On a trail called Franks Loop. 100 meters dozen the trail with my crew following, trail takes 3 big steps down then hard right turn less than a bike length from the drop. Swamp at the bottom. Went over the bars as I tried to make the turn. Went head first into the swamp and discovered my fat bike floats really well.
embarrassing moment when i started riding different bikes at age 18 and I'm still learning to do basic tricks while the kids sending their bikes into the air like it was too easy.
Definitely an Australian Shepherd, that is my trail dog and she is faster than I am flat out downhill! Amazing, friendly and lovable dogs, plus very intelligent and live to learn and interact with the owner. It'll be your best friend in no time!
Serious style points for Winterfell 7102! Love that move. And most embarrassing bike is a broken bike, like once during this past summer I snapped a right pedal completely off the crank and had to sort of pedal and push that bike about ten miles to get back to my apartment. And there's no way not to look like a kook doing that. But the all-time biggest embarrassment was pushing a BMX bike with a flat from Half Moon Bay to Daly City in the Seventies because I didn't have a pump and patch kit and I know I looked stupid pushing a bike up the shoulder of Highway 1. But I was surprised nobody stopped to offer help as it was a sunny weekend afternoon and lots of folks were out for a drive and my fellow Californians were supposed to be a mellow bunch. But oh well, not that day and that's okay.
Got a double whammy for you guys. The most embarrassing bike to ride is my old Walmart FS "MTB" in front of a massive group of fantastic-looking hikers. I came around a turn, said hi, hit a root just the wrong way, and my handle bars came off. The whole freakin' bar! Managed to stay up until the next turn, but couldn't get my hand on the brake lever in time. Next thing I knew I was 10ft below the trail in a creek bed with half the women from the group around me asking if I was ok. I was still holding the handle bars.
I have a Giant Roam 1. It has a 60mm travel fork, long stem, 700mm bars, 3x10 drivetrain, cyclocross tyres, 700b wheels and commuter grips. I started to ride trails with it and want something that is better off-road. What should I upgrade to make it more trail-friendly?
First off, definitely keep the "Hacks 'n Bodges" song, it's great. Secondly, as I was listening to you list off which bikes should be included in this weeks poll I went straight for recumbent, only to find that you decided not to include them. So, I picked unicycle. Not really because I think that they're embarrassing, but because they would probably result in the most embarrassing moments.
Embarrassing Moment: I was riding with a few friends around a lake in Northern California. I came around a tight and off cambered rooty corner, right near the edge of the lake. I cleared it and was biking on when suddenly I heard a "Whoa!" and a splash. I went back to find one of my friends swimming in the lake. Apparently he hadn't made the turn and went straight into the drink.
One of my many embarrassing mountain biking moments. Just started riding clipped in. Whilst waiting for a charity ride to start at Silverstone with more than 2000 rides. I thought it would be cool to wheel down the pit lane... over cooked it landed on my back with the bike still attached above me. Blood hurt my arse and broke my saddle... had to try and ride off like everything was cool.... lmao
Embarrassing moment: On a group ride at Glentress, got a big gash in my shin from a pedal strike - kept going to the bottom of the section, on of the guys was like 'thats bleeding pretty bad man' I was like 'don't worry I've got a first aid kit in my bag' went to get it out and realised I'd left the bag back up at the top, so we all had to cycle back up to the top for me to collect my worldly possessions of phone, keys, wallet, lunch and bandages. We did get to ride Spooky Wood twice though so not all bad.
Embarrassing moment: I was at a bmx racing event, and on the first race of the day, as I stood up to get into position, my jeans ripped open from top to bottom. Completed the race with my butt showing and every convective race after that for the day. I also stood on the podium with my butt out. Tried to fix it a spare break cable , but just wouldn't hold.
Could be embarrasing, but I spotted this guy riding his unicycle on the local MTB track... And that's got some crazy climbs and drops too. Instant legend status.
Hey Guys looking good in the shed with the Hats!!!!!!! Scrap the no hats in the shed rule!!! Love the show. BTW how about a a year coaching for 2 old guys ....proper progression sessions?????? Hoss
Just yesterday, I was coming off a trail and was focused on some barbed wire my buddies and I was trying to avoid but in the process, I hit a black pipe of some kind, and I ended up tumbling about 3 or 4 feet and busting my knee real good. once I hit the ground I sprung up gave my best impression of a sailor's vocabulary, luckily there was only a minor paint chip.
I think the point why I've stayed loyal to the Hardtail is simply I just about max out the weight on a bike, I play rugby, I'm 6'5" and playing as a lock I'm over 110kgs. Being that size wears components out at a seriously fast rate. I couldn't afford the maintenence costs of a FS.
Embarrassing fail - Finishing a 98km ride, popped a wheelie over the finish line and had both legs cramp up mid wheelie and went for a slow-motion crash in front of a few hundred people. Luckily I had a soft grass landing, but did not help that I was still clipped in, cramping and had to be helped upright.
Embarrassing moment: Tried to take a small roundabout (needed to do roughly 270° in it) at 40-45 km/h on a MTB, immediately fell to the side and slid on the asphalt for about 20 meters. Luckily my backpack took all the scraping on me and my bar ends saved my hands and cockpit.
Most embarrassing kinda crashes, when you stop put feet down but bike hasn't stopped and you get bruised by the bike. My biggest bruise was half the back of my thigh black, cause the seat hit me when I braked. Otherwise general tripping on bike on group rides when stopping.
I went went mountain biking with a group, it was a last minute thing and someone had a spare "mountain bike" so I thought id tag along. When I got there the bike was more like a hybrid city bike, 26in wheels, rim brake, no sus, welded stem. Any way 2 hours in I got complete lost and split up from the group. And decided I try to find the car park. I made it down and everyone was sitting in there cars ready to go. I came out of the forest, caked in mud and blood, my sock rigid with dry blood, and a crank missing. I rolled up to the group and got told off for taking too long and making them late. I just wanted to crawl back in to the forest, curl up and die.
I was on the final downhill of my ride, on a track where there was a mates race the next day so people were practising and pushing up. Final root section, came in with a little too much speed with what I was used to and went straight over the bars and my dropper hose came out right infront of a group of people...
The aussie is indefinitely the best trail dog. Incredibly loyal and one of the smartest breeds. It helps that they stick on your heels and are quick to get out of the way.
Embarrassing moment: riding my old claudbutler when I was young, first ‘Trials’ Bike so a dirty great big tioga seat with tioga fat 66 tyres and magura hs33 booster, busting out some sick wheelies past some ladies, my massive tioga seat snapped I slipped on to that huge tioga tyre which then dragged my plumbs between that and my very very close fit magura hs33 booster, I let go of the bars and just barrled down the road, with my bits stuck. ripped my squashed bits out of the bike and just shed a tear on the way home. I still flinch today that’s 17 years later.
I have started to ride exactly one year ago. My buddies are all into enduro so I have joined them saying that all tge technical features I wouldn't ride. I was fully equipped except that I had my running shoes and no glasses. First feature we came across, I came out of my bike and walked down the feature... it was slippery so I felt down when walking. My bike felt after and the side of the handle bad punched my nose bone at some mm from my eye. . So my first crash was out of the bike :( Things change since, I have felt many other times and always from top of my bike. So at least that I have learned: )
