Ex-Navy here, I polished decks with MarDet people from 0200 to 0400 every morning for six months onboard ship. Later, they even held me in the brig for a short time (12 hours), my guards wondered why, with my military bearing, short haircut and such, that I didn't just join the Corps to begin with. I had a great job, the Cold War was my meat, and I was good at it down in CIC. Always loved the Marines anyway, old Uncle Bill got it in the back at Guadal, survived it, became a lifer and eventually oversaw maintenance for Eisenhower's "Marine One". At the age of five, Uncle Bill placed me in the cockpit of Marine One so my parents could take a photo (still have it). Uncle Bill was the most squared away Marine I ever met, and I've met plenty. Surprised when I saw him in the coffin as only a Captain, but later learned he started out as an Enlisted man in 1938 or 39' and later deferred promotions in order to work for IKE. Capt. Bill Bracket USMC retired in 63' just before Kennedy got shot, I remember this, because we went down to Annandale, Virginia to visit the extended family when I was nine years old on a prop job, probably a DC-6. He never talked about Guadal much, wish I pressed him more later on, that is. We know the story but had to hear it from other men and the records.

Well they missed the boat one hot summer day in 1965 at the embassy in Saigon, when the cong created a diversion at main gate and they all left their posts to reinforce the main gate. Three snipers and a bomber got over the rear wall heading towards the rear embassy. It took one off duty Army private to end that incursion.

Its crazy how much the program has evolved since this time. We are at over twice the countries, twice the headquarters, and well over twice the manpower...but those locks they trained on are still taught at the schoolhouse.

I almost re-upped to go to MSG school. I rescinded my request. I even got Meritorious Sgt. Because they thought I was staying in. My CO was really angry when he learned I wasn’t staying in.

Its the highest washout rate school in the corps, and unlike MARSOC that's not because of difficulty. They asked us everything from body count to drinking habits and 90% of my class failed the first test just to be told that the results weren't part of our GPA after the fact. If you can demonstrate patience and bearing and resist the urge to enact violence upon the staff then you are seen as ready to work around diplomats.

@@jacobschrift2448 that makes sense. My brother who was an 0351, went to Sea School and served on the John F Kennedy and Carl Vinson. Now they closed that. The 3rd Mar Div only has one infantry regiment, and there are no more tanks. Sad what is happening. SF

@@JeepWrangler1957 That's all the flashy stuff, nobody is talking about LE being disbanded thus removing our ability to properly take prisoners. *laughs in warcrimes*

In the early 90s I used to wangle an invite to the Marine parties at the US consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Utterly awesome until some bastard tried to blow the place up in 2004 killing 9 people

Did they use the same vaccination needle on every soldier?? It would just take one of them to have hepatitis to give it to every solider after them...
