Our host visited Satonotabi Resort Lodge Kiyokawa in Bungoono City, Oita Prefecture, to experience the activities making the most of the abundant surrounding wilderness.
Lodge Kiyokawa sits by the Okudake River, which flows from Mt. Sobo - one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
Accommodation facilities include the adorable Tree Hut, Log House, Domi, and Cabin House, each allowing groups of friends and family to spend time amongst nature.
You’ll enter the Tree Hut by climbing a small staircase and opening the hatch.
The inside is spacious, and gives visitors the distinctive feeling of floating up in the air.
There is also a hammock under the eaves for an afternoon nap.
Pets are also allowed to stay with you at the Cabin House (dogs only, limited to designated locations).
In front is a dog park, which can be used for free while staying.
Along with swimming in the river and having a barbeque, one of the attractions is that you can join a multitude of hands-on activities arranged by the facility, including packrafting, river fishing, and hiking.
Our host tried packrafting in the pristine emerald green stream right in front of Lodge Kiyokawa.
You’ll be able to enjoy a slow and blissful time rocking in the river’s flow, while waterfalls and dynamic walls of rock hidden from the river’s edge await explorers.
Within this lineup, we particularly recommend trying out the Finland-style “tent sauna,” which sits in the middle of grand nature. Being a wood-fire sauna, those who usually feel suffocated by saunas will be at ease! After heating up your body, plunge into the Okudake River right in front to feel yourself invigorated by a wave of euphoria.
Finish up by sitting on a chair placed by the riverside to enjoy an “air bath.”
With the whispering river and chirping birds providing a natural soundtrack, you can relax and let your fatigue wash away.
