Any reasonable person would be cautious in the beginning. I know I was. I retired, sold everything and bought a motorhome. I traveled and did so well saving money that I realized I could actually spend a lot more. I start my 8th year very soon and I've added cruising and traveling internationally.

From 2012, I traveled to dozens of countries and honed my short list of places to retire. But during the pandemic, a lot of visa rules changed and no longer worked for me. I also started an online retail business that requires my presence so now my plan is to keep my Chicago live/work loft as a home base, and slow travel 2-3x year. That way, I don’t need to deal with residency visas, taxes, etc…the best part is because I can source goods from other countries, all my travel expenses are tax-deductible!

We did a VERY simple thing, I don't think it's "burnout" it's usually boredom, and you become disappointed that place you visit isn't actually what you wanted it to be, you still call home, home. There is a HUGE psychological pull and it shouldn't be ignored. There is so much pressure to sew the world and experience travel but what people often overlook is you are just visiting other people's homes as in, the boring place (to them) they grew up in and call home, they took dream about getting away from it. We have fallen back in love with the UK, not because of the weather, food, etc etc but because it's HOME...and even with all it's faults we love it and now realise there is so much to discover. We often chase happiness and many of us believe it's in another destination, travel has become such a huge part of marketing and consumerism, it's also becoming harder and more unenjoyable to travel. The quote that hit me hard was "wherever you go, there you are" We are glad we travelled but we are now looking at going on little adventures whilst we build a happy home life.

As a solo full time traveler, I enjoy your conversations because they help me think about how to find balance as I explore. I am learning how to find a balance between staying in one place for awhile and discovering new places. I’m learning about the balance of sticking to a budget and indulging in special once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. I’m learning how to create relatively safe and comfortable temporary home bases and also to take some considered risks to stretch my comfort zone. I’m learning a lot about how to recognize when I need to slow down to avoid burnout and when to move on to new places. I am learning how far ahead I need to plan accommodations and transport to feel at ease. Mostly I am learning to be flexible and self reliant as I explore. Your conversations help me reflect and appreciate how much I am learning and how full time travel enriches my life.

I’m so glad you’re doing this NOW. So many people wait and then are restricted due to health issues as they get older. I’m a single Mom who loves travel and have taken my teenager to Europe, and South East Asia many times. It is hard to pack for multi seasonal travel, but have come to believe that you pack for your weather for first 1-3 months then add once weather changes. Good motto is to never pack an item that has "I might" attached to it. Might items you buy on the road. Travel has gotten much easier with less in our bags it is hard at first but makes life better. Now after almost a year of travel we have found a base in southern france at a VERY reasonable cost that we will be able to leave our items we don't need when we travel from there. So then bags should really get even smaller!! Fun fact to share . . . We got caught in some unusually cold weather in Poland a few years ago and went into a thrift store to snag something to help, and found a polar fleece zip up and no prices on anything? So I get to the counter and they weighed it!!! Fifty cents! Thought that was so interesting clothes by the kg?!! Then when we got to warmer climate I donated it. Glad to hear you are finding your comfortable travel routine because that is what is about and everyone's is different!! Cheers!

We would agree! If you aren't sure if you'll need something or not, then don't pack it, buy it on the road if you end up needing something!

Im back watching this video. it's like listening to friends. You both are doing great with sharing your knowledge. Thank you so much. We are still in Albania, making our way to Turkiyë, heading back to Miami in late October on a repositioning cruise. It's been wonderful, but we have had to adjust so much due to foreign economic changes, our own changing needs, and the climatic factors (I did not think it would be so impactful). I lived in Florida for over 30 years, Miami, so Im no stranger to heat, but this heat in Europe has gotten worse and longer, there has been days that we could not go out. The dollar is not taking us as far as it used to. We started 8 years ago with a base in Barcelona in the spring and short trips out to other countries in Europe. That became economically prohibitive. Thank you for sharing all of your methods and PIVOTS. We😅 don't feel alone in this amazing lifestyle.

I’m glad to see that I’m not alone in the accommodation costs. No matter if we go to Spain, Portugal, Italy, France etc…it’s getting pricey. Can relate to much of your experience. We have done several pivots in our lives. Very glad though that we decided to get permanent residency in Mexico 3 years ago. Once you get it there is no time limit on how much time you have to be in country. Come and go wherever you want. Requirements get a little more difficult every year so glad we got it when we did. Had not planned to buy a place but glad we did now. We have a home base in our pocket as we watch prices climb here as well. Can travel wherever we want with the security of having a home to come back to and just be.

If you are going back to SE Asia put Tokyo on your list! The US $ exchange rate is insane right now, our hotel was $100 a night (APA Ueno) and ramen for two + Sake for $6.75. Love your videos. Looking forward to hearing more on how you are considering altering the length of your stays. We're moving more towards regional "home-base" model; typically a "lower" cost mid-sized city, that's also a viable transportation hub - where we can stay longer than 30 days. Take Bologna IT for example - it's a great city in and of itself, but it also has very accessible and affordable regional transportation (plane/train) options to explore northern Italy as a whole, via day trips or long weekends..

There was a comment at one of the videos that I can't find anymore, it was about someone wishing to visit India for a vacation but having concerns. Well, I've been to India several times (I'm a European) and I met with an exceptional level of hospitality there and stayed at such beautiful places that are up to the highest of Western standards. If you're looking for that, and you like early 1900's elegance check out places in Pondicherry, Goa, Kochi, Chennai or the private houseboat experiences in the Backwaters of Kerala. Even older than that, amazing Heritage hotels are in hundreds-of-years old Havelis in Bombay, Old Delhi and Calcutta. Staying at one of those is truly an experience of a lifetime.

Hi guys, you are correct that prices have increased significantly, and accommodation costs differ from when you started your adventure. I like the idea of traveling for three months at a time; this way, you can still have a home base and connect with family and friends. I prefer the podcast videos over the destination ones. I love to hear your thoughts about each location rather than what to see and do. Your time in Mexico will be exciting and open up a new world for people looking to get off the beaten path, so I look forward to that. Less is more with nearly everything in life, and I am a proponent of keeping everything as simple as possible. From possessions to Michelin-starred recipes, the secret is having the best tools or ingredients for the job and not overcomplicating everything with superfluous items. Keep up the excellent work. I am looking forward to Saturday's video!

What scares me is the fact that prices not only have "increased significantly", as you put it, but are skyrocketing since Covid abated - at least with regard to my budget. There are " budget travelers" who have 3x the means (or more) that I have. I'm following many YTers with that in mind. And I do appreciate B&C's vlogs very much, knowing that my means can't approach theirs. Es como es.

Thank you so much for your honest input! My husband and I in 2-3 years plan to obtain a flat in Portugal since I was born there and but grew up in USA since 8.5 months old. I grew up as a child visiting Portugal. My husband would be able to work remotely but I would not as a BSN RN. We plan to visit 2-3 times a year with a total of stay in Portugal 4-6 months a year. As you know, that is our present plans but I’m sure it will change. Though we will always have a base in USA and Portugal. Thank you for your info blog!! Question - did you ever go back to Portugal?

Having one base would be amazing but having two would be even better!!! 36 days until my retirement, 74 until I depart for Cambodia after selling everything 🙂 I have a dog, so it would make it way too difficult to travel from country to country monthly. My base will be Siem Reap, and I'll do short trips to neighboring countries from there (already found dog boarding places while I'm away). The first few months I just want to chill and test my budget. That's the "plan", but I'll see how it goes, and adjust like you did!

Of all the places you traveled, I’m curious if you had to pick one place to live, where would that be. In terms of cost, weather, healthcare, safety, etc. I was thinking of Greece, (because of the ocean) but may be too hot and I don’t know renting costs, or anything else. Planning a trip soon. It’s too expensive to retire in the U.S.,at least where I want to live. Been to Panama in February, again too hot. Wondering your thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your next video.

We head home today..... 10 countries... 30 ish cities 12 months I "pinch myself" too Brian.. After two years of watching you two.... Hard to believe that it has been over a year now that Minnie and I started our journey.... 1. Have you considered a one time life membership to your private group? 2. Have you ever considered talking about return trips to previous locations? I know you've returned to Turkiye.... We have mixed feelings... On the one hand desire to see new places vs unfinished business vs feeling guilty about "already been there". I know this seems confusing.... Do you ever feel like almost obligated to go somewhere new? Versus.... We live this life unapologetically with the freedom to go back to the same region or Country? Hope that sort of makes sense. Safe travels Larry and Minnie....

Another quality discussion and update. Tne philisophical question becomes, had you not embarked on the slow travel for the last three years, do you still think that you have landed in this spot (more frequent times coming home, with fewer long stretch journeys)? So had you bought a new home base in Portugal would this still be the case? I think that you clearly made the right choice for you and as a result have had remarkable life experiences to share. Having not even started on my journey yet it is interesting. How often do your kids come and stay with you in your places around the globe? That, for me, would make it easier to stay abroad. I do like this more relaxed conversation - it just needs some craft beers and a patio by the ocean! One day! Cheers to both!!

Great video. Adapting to new a situation is very important. I have been retired in Budapest since 08/23, but I'm chasing the Sun. Therefore, in wintertime I go to S America or SE Asia. Summertime I take short trips in Europe. I have a condo in Budapest where I can relax and recharge. I had always problem with the FIRE definition. Financially independence means to me that you can comfortable do whatever you wish, with a reasonable limit. If you can not live this way you are not financially independent. When you go back to US, do you stay with friends and family members? Again, this is a form of dependency. I was very lucky bcz I loved my job and had a very good salary. I have traveled a lot during my working days. Therefore, I was financially independent. Having a base for me is very important. After 5-6 months of travel I go back to my base and relax, surrounding by my own furniture, kitchen and belongings (including cloths). I was very happy that you like Budapest. It is a great city. I'm also glad that you guys are happy and wish you luck and good health. The only important thing for you to be happy with your life.

We are excited to start our travel in a couple of months-a mix of time periods to start-a few days in a major city, a guided tour in an adventurous place, six weeks, a month and a week in different places in Italy. We anticipate returning to the U.S. annually to see family and possibly take care of personal business, but our family is spread out in various locations so “home” will not be as specific a concept for us, and we won’t want to return multiple times during the year. However, we might explore in the U.S. for periods of time. Question: have you needed to receive mail or deliveries while in a foreign location, and what did you do? We will have a mail site, but what about receiving a new credit card, things like that?

Hey Brian & Carrie, love your videos and appreciate all the info you both share. Thank you. My wife and I would like to start doing this, but don’t feel like we have enough saved up to stop working and start the slow travel lifestyle. I would like to humbly request a video on how much one would need to have saved total to do what you guys do. I know you’ve both mentioned many times what your monthly budgets are, which has been very helpful. And of course one can add the months up. But would you both recommend starting this with $100k saved? $200k $500k? more? Less? Thanks in advance and appreciate all the video. Evan.

We're in our 50s and are cutting back on work to do travel stints and develop more of life outside of work. I hear you. We left the US in October 2020 and headed to Albania. We thought we'd do the slow travel route but learned that it's too expensive for us. Don't get me wrong, we are loving our retirement, but we have to keep on budget. We got residency in Albania in 2022 and then at the end of 2022 we moved to Mexico and got residency here and didn't renew residency in Albania. We're now looking at a visit to France this winter to get residency there. It may be a back and forth between Mexico and France, or France may work out long term. We want a second residency because we want the healthcare in France while we can get it as a long term back up because that's one cost we have yet to have covered going into old age. Under no circumstances will we return to the US for healthcare, especially after being away from that horrible system going on almost four years. We are the healthiest we've been our entire adult lives and are on no medications and have had no issues. But it's time to have the coverage for something big down the line which is inevitable. And France is at the top of our list. Countries are starting to shut out foreign retirees and you can't blame them. For example, Colombia is shutting out new retirees from other countries starting in 2025. And Mexico is getting tougher approving retirees into their system.
