This is the machine I have been thinking about getting!!! Thank you for posting the videos, it is really cool to get to see it being used. I have a list of ideas that I have been using as my "reasons for getting an embroidery machine that I don't really need" :) They are mostly for gifts and are all pretty useful.... 1. Quilting a quilt with a simple redwork style design in some of the blocks as an accent. 2. Making small zipper bags (completely in the hoop patterns are on etsy!) 3. Felt "Paper" dolls (also some adorable etsy patterns). 4. Quilt labels...because we should. 5. Luggage tags! I will keep a lookout on your channel for more ideas!

Hmm, I don't mind sacrificing some safety pins and making them curved just so I can pin a whole hat. Like wow, I love that you thought this up and shared this w everyone, thank you! I always thought we needed a specialised cap hoop

You could also thread shoe string through the hat "air" holes. Maybe try and punch holes through the stabilizer, run the string through the hat and stabilizer and tie a knot to the string on the back of the stabilizer, then snug the hat tight to the stabilizer and add a small binder clip (Office Depot Binder Clips) to the string so the hat stays flat. There are usually several circular air holes on ball caps where you could try this method. I'd assume the stabilizer would need to be thick enough not to allow the knotted string to pull back through.

Great Video Jennifer. I just got my machine a few days ago. You made that look easy. My only wish on this machine would be for a few more hoop options, like the hat hoop that I saw on Amazon. But the quality of the stitchng is as good as the higher end machines that I've seen. It would be nice if Brother would throw in a few more bones in the software.

Yes, the product support on this machine could be improved, although my 1034D serger came with a CD-ROM video that had to have been produced in the 90s.

I've had very middling results doing hats with this machine. The logo has to be narrow, otherwise it runs into the edges of the brim. You also have to be careful that the logo isn't too high on the hat, which is something that happens when you are compensating for the width (trying to clear the brim). I did a beautiful hat one time, only to find that a third of the logo was was on the curve to the top of the head. I didn't bother with the pins, all that did was rip the stabilizer. I used peel and stick to hold the hat.

I did not know it was possible to embroider a hat in a flat hoop. I always thought this needed to be done on a professional machine with a ball cap frame. of course, I wouldn't want to do 100 hats in a flat hoop. that would just be crazy. one might be ok
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 6 лет назад
Believe me, I feel the same way! It is possible to embroider a hat this way, but it was not a project I'd call "super easy." Doing a couple at a time was okay, but I would not recommend trying to start a production line using this method. The second one I did, I think I used too much basting spray which gummed up the needle and caused the tension issues and thread breakage. I'm wondering if peel and stick stabilizer would have worked better, I may order some to test out. I also ordered a sample of a $6 hat from JiffyShirts.com and it was too structured to pin down to the hoop. Also, the smaller the design footprint, the better as it is challenging to pin down a large area smoothly on the hat.

I worked at an embroidery production place for about a year and hats were the most hated. putting them on the frames was absolutely miserable. I can't even imagine trying to wrangle a hat into a flat hoop the way you did. as for the peel and stick stabilizer, I'm thinking it's still going to gum up your needle. we didn't ever use peel and stick at the embroidery place. only tear away or cut away.
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 6 лет назад
I can see why hats were the most hated... I've seen others just use straight pins, but I found that it loosened the hooped stabilizer with all the wrangling, so the curved quilt basting pins cut down on that significantly.
@dindog22
@dindog22 6 лет назад
putting them into the hat frames is miserable. it really hurts your hands. actually, working at that place made me never want to mess with an embroidery machine ever again in my life. I'll stick to alterations. lol

Hey! Do you wash the hat after to get the sticky residue off? Or how does that work?
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 5 лет назад
No need to, once you tear it away it's not sticky on the inside of the hat. Another option would be cut away stabilizer and that wouldn't be sticky either since the spray is in between the layer of the hat and the stabilizer.
@AshleySaechao
@AshleySaechao 5 лет назад
Sewing Report oh okay thanks! Maybe I am using too much spray. Every time I remove the excess stabilizer it’s sticky from the spray adhesive. Or maybe I’m using the wrong spray. Trial and error lol
@angelaellison3907
@angelaellison3907 4 года назад
Jennifer, why do you have to use the spray adhesive? I saw you use it on another embroidery video too. Once the hat is pinned down, it's not going to move. So, is it necessary to use the spray if the item is secured to the stabilizer? Thanks.
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 4 года назад
Pins alone will *not* be enough in my opinion, the combination of the temporary adhesive plus pins is what makes this possible. If you just use pins, there will likely be quite a bit of shifting around which will mess up the design. I also strongly feel accurate placement on the hoop would be much more difficult if you're trying to pin it. Another option is peel n stick tear away stabilizer, but I've seen a lot of reviews state that it was hard to remove which made me not want to try it. It's been quite some time since I shot this video, but if I do more hats - I'm going to use temporary spray adhesive on cut away stabilizer (I think it looks better on the back side) instead of tear away. That being said, I found hats on the Brother PE800 to be frustrating to do and would not recommend getting this machine if you plan to do a ton of hats like for a small business.

@angeliaklee

Yes, it does! It gives you the options to insert the text in a general small, medium, and large size, but you can always adjust it to your liking once you set the design.

Sooo I bought a PE 800 but I'm scared to open it because I'm not sure what program software I need lol . I have a pretty simple company logo I want to embrioder . Any suggestions on embroidery software needed if any ? Thanks
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 5 лет назад
I downloaded Embrilliance Express which is free, but SUPER BASIC. You will need to purchase individual designs on various websites/Etsy if you want anything that doesn't come with the machine. You can't really design anything in Embrilliance Express, you'd need upgraded software which costs a LOT more. I don't need to design much, so I've just been buying a la carte designs.

@@SewingReport Thank you so much I have the design on Adobe illustrator which embroidery program would you recommend to purchase?
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 5 лет назад
I'm probably not the best person to ask, but from what I understand - a design needs to be specifically digitized in embroidery design software (to create the stitch patterns) and can't just be imported from a non-embroidery specific program like Illustrator. I'm not creating designs myself, so Embrilliance Express fits my needs as I don't need sophisticated/advance features. If you just have one or a few designs, I'd just pay for each to be digitized from an online shop like this one: www.etsy.com/listing/481138617/digitizingninjascom-embroidery If you are doing TONS of designs yourself - it might be worth investing in a more advanced software but they are upwards of $1,000 and I have not personally tried any of those so I can't recommend a product I have not used.

Hello This is my first time to your Channel Do you think this process can be done using the foam to make your letters or graphic puffy? If you have a video doing this could you please forward me to that video? I would love to see that. If not, can you please make a video if such a thing can be done. Thank you.
@turkey510
@turkey510 4 года назад
omarklever hello, i’m 2 months late, but as long as the design is properly digitized for 3D foam you can use this method! 3D embroidery is tricky at first but once you’ve done it a few times its all good to go!

did your machine come with a hat loop?
@SewingReport
@SewingReport 5 лет назад
The PE800 only comes with a 5x7, which IS what I used to embroider this hat but it's not specifically for that purpose. There are third-party vendors that do sell "cap hoop" attachments but the reviews seem lackluster and I'm not going to buy it. If you do a lot of hats, you're probably much better off going with a commercial embroidery machine that has a legit cap attachment.

Multi-needle industrial grade embroidery machines, but they're a LOT more expensive, think $8,000+. They typically have a metal cap hoop that is meant for hats.
