Once you've got all those basic outline stitches down, you've got to start working on some fill stitches! Satin stitch is the easiest and most commonly used stitch, while long and short stitch is the basis of thread painting. Fishbone can be done so many different ways just by alteration the angles, space, and length of the stitches, but it's always going to be best for leaves. And finally, crow's foot... well, okay, there's not a lot you can do with crow's foot, but I just think it's super fun!

@bn3842
@bn3842 4 месяца назад
The proper stitch always goes top to bottom, so you're also doing a full stitch on the back each time. The saver goes top to bottom then bottom to top, making just a short little stitch on the back. You can't stitch as closely this way, so you then need to go back and fill in the gaps, also using top to bottom, bottom to top.

If I can just add to folks: for the satin stitch, the thread saver method is not NEARLY as stable as the “proper” method in my experience. Save yourself some frustration and gaps and go for the “proper” method - you’ll be glad you did. I also found that I got much neater edges with the “proper” method and since I do designs that are very bold and require cleaner lines, it is a must for me. Definitely a hard lesson learned!
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
Very true! The thread saver method can be helpful when you're trying not to compress your fabric too much, when you're on the last leg of a thread color, or if the section you're sewing doesn't need a lot of back stability to it, but when in doubt and when able, it's always better to go with the proper way.

Hi! Awesome and very helpful video :) , but I have a question, what are the differences between the proper and thread saver satin stitches? Also, do you have any advice to avoid loose stitches when filling big figures (when there is a big length side to side) ? Thank you!
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
Thanks! To find out more about the thread saver vs proper stitches, check out my video on hoop butts here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c9JblTcRgjI.html As far as the large spaces go, I would recommend not using satin stitch to fill them. It can be tempting to go with satin stitch so you have those clean, straight lines, but don't be afraid to try out other fill stitches like brick, long and short, chain, or split stitch. Those will add some texture to the shape, but they will also keep your stitches tight and close to the fabric. If you really want to do satin stitch, make sure your fabric is pulled as tight as possible, and give each stitch an extra (gentle) tug to make sure you are leaving no slack as you go around.

What is the function of going back and forth with the thread saver satin stitch? I've always just worked it "left to right" like the proper part you did, just working very close.
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
So when doing satin stitch the proper way, you are putting just as much floss on the back of the fabric as on the front. This gives you a nice, sturdy stitch, but it also leaves a lot of floss unseen. If I'm running out of a certain color and want to conserve my thread, I'll do the thread saver version, when puts a lot less floss unseen on the back of the fabric, and therefore uses less floss overall!

I don't embroidery at all but wondered the same and eventually guessed that it might help stabilize it during wear to prevent bunching. Stress on any single thread in the fill will tug at several different parts of it, right? So maybe it recovers from accidents better?

Thank you so much for this video! I'm a beginner at embroidery and I had the HARDEST time filling in space without gaps or messed up lines, and the piece I'm working on requires shading so the blend technique was perfect!

how is the thread saver satin stitch a thread saver? what's the benefit?
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
The thread saver option will cover the same amount of area using less thread, because there is not as much left on the back of the fabric as in the normal method. Sometimes, we are scrimping to save the last bit of a certain color, so a thread-saving method of a stitch can help prolong the running out.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I really needed to learn how to do a thread saver correctly. Also the video was straight into the point unlike a bunch of other youtubers who take decades to properly explain or is just too fast to understand. We need more Tutorial youtubers like you. Seriously i couldn't thank you enough.

I try to embroider, but I can never seem to be able to fill it up completely, even after this video. I suspect that my thread is too thin
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
If you are using only one or two strands of embroidery floss, or if you're using a regular sewing thread instead of one meant for embroidery, it's going to be super hard to fill an area (especially a decently large one) with thread. I definitely suggest going up to 3+ strands of embroidery floss to make it way easier, then think about making each stitch almost on top of the one before it. Hope that helps!

@@gettheetothestitchery Oh Ok thanks so much, I don't have any needles specially for embroidery, so I tried using two strands but it couldn't fit in :P

May i ask how many threads are you using on the satin stitch filling ? Because whn i used a thick thread it didnt look this clean at all, especially tht im making anime characters and stuff, also every tiny mistake would be so flagrant it didnt look pretty :'((
@gettheetothestitchery
@gettheetothestitchery 3 года назад
Satin stitch will definitely look cleaner the fewer (or thinner) thread you use. This was done with three strands of embroidery floss, which is a really comfortable zone to stay in, but if you want it to be even cleaner, you can drop to 2 or even 1 strands! It will take a lot more focus and patience to make the edges perfect and fill in an area, but in the end, it will look amazing.
