For modeling I use primarily SolidWorks and for toolpaths Autodesk Fusion360. Fusion would do fine for the modeling too, but I have more experience on SW, so I use that.
Hi Frank, I think Maximat 11 goes with the same milling unit. I did use the original lead screws, and it was a mistake. Go for ball screws, they are be better in every aspect except the higher price. I wish you success with your project !
No servos, just open loop stepper motors. The cross slide had NEMA 23 motor, that was little too weak for the job, so I ran it with little more current that it was rated for. So I added some heatsinks on the sides, to keep the temperature down.
