Yah....me too. Had it on the Asheville District here in Western North Carolina many times over the years. It's a shame that NS got rid of these Geeps. They were excellent switchers on the road and in the yard!
@@davidandyvonne06 I went to engine school with a guy from there, Bill. Old head conductor decided he didnt want to work the ground anymore. Good guy, worked the Saluda mountain run. I worked all over the lake division and the former CR. Most likely top 3 most reliable products GM has ever made
This unit was originally built for the Southern Railway so I wouldn’t doubt if it spent time in that area!! Far from home up in Ohio, but it’s got roots from down south.
work with at least 1, sometimes 2 every day. Hope its more taken care of than when they're still owned by NS. Absolute old dinosaurs in dire need of rebuilding.
@@CDROM-lq9iz The engineers felt safer running LHE lead. In the event of a wreck, the brunt of the damage is the air compressor and sand box instead of the SHE sand box and the crew cab. Made since
@general5104 I've heard that and I've also heard that it was N&Ws attempt a bidirectional capability. When running long hood lead your sitting on the right where all the signals and important stuff is, so the long hood being in your field of view doesn't matter much. Meanwhile running short hood lead, you're sitting on the left but only have to see around the short hood to look at everything.
Noticing the two columns of exhaust upon startup, I think this locomotive is the non-turbo. It would still utilize a blower for air transfer through the cylinders...
That’s right, it’s a roots blown non turbo. That’s why it’s got that more thump-thump-thump sound rather than the more whiny sound of a 40 series unit.
The GP38-2's & SD38-2's are the last units from EMD that were naturally aspirated/roots blown. All other EMD units with the 645E3 motors are turbocharged.
Not WHAT it did but ohhhhh what it WILL do.. An orchestra of demons drinking the Devil’s water a mechanical concert all in time all in tune.. Can we get Vincent Price to narrate that statement??
Just because it has a Roots blower dosn't mean the engine is supercharged! The blower provides the scavenge air only. Maybe you should learn how these engines work!
