Emerald tree boas are absolutely beautiful snakes. One of the most beautiful on the planet. And though they have giant teeth, and a reputation for being a bit grumpy, they actually can be very pleasant snakes. But are they good pets? Is the emerald tree boa the best pet snake for you?

My first and only snake is an Emerald Green that my Dad got us. Going into it, every source we found said that they were incredibly aggressive. When we talk to reptile stores that had a shipment or two, the employees always mention how every time they tried to clean the enclosures they almost got bit. Even other EGB keepers we've talked to have said "sorry" and reported their snakes' grumpy temperament. Our Emerald Green, however? His name is Pickles and he is the most cuddly baby in the world and he loves pictures. He's a nervous little fella so we make sure to accommodate his needs, but otherwise he loves spending time with us. He tends to be better handled at night if he's already eaten recently because then he'll move around and be very curious and excited for adventure. During the day he simply wants to sleep so he'll either curl up on a wrist or slither all the way back to his enclosure. At night his eyes get very big and he looks like a literal puppy dog and he acts pretty much the same as a puppy. I love Pickles so much.

I’ve dealt with and bred hundreds of these snakes and many are puppies and some are like serial killers!!!You just never know and in my experience tameness isn’t achievable..tameness either is or isn’t with this breed,I love the dude in the video, but his experience with them is far different from mine when the aspect of taming aggression goes!!!Maybe he does something different than what myself and many snake experts I’ve worked with do!!But out of the box they are either tame or not and they tend to not change in ANY event!!

Wow, I always thought these were gorgeous snakes, but until now, I figured they were basically super high-maintenance reptiles that you could only look at, and that's it. I mean, I'm detail-oriented enough for specific maintenance requirements, but I also like the idea of being able to actually interact with a pet, too. So, I figured, "No GTP or ETB for me." Now that I've seen this video, I actually feel like this could be a reasonable snake for me, some years down the line. After sufficient preparation, naturally. Though I will probably forego the "basin" variant, unless their captive-bred cost declines after some time. And that high-definition green 🐍 scaly footage is "eye candy" of the highest order! 🤩

When I owned a wholesale reptile business with my brother almost 30 years ago, he very carefully took out a wild caught Emerald Tree Boa to show a customer and everything went fine until he was putting it back in it's cage and when he was rapidly removing his hand from the cage after releasing the snake, it absolutely nailed him on his hand with those giant canines (hence the scientific name, Corallus caninus). The bite was so deep that there was subcutaneous fat extruding from the wound. I believe he still has small scars.

Definitely the next boa I’m adding to my collection this year! Literally my fave snake in a snake book that I’d read all the time as a kid in elementary. Seemed impossible to keep as a kid, but now seems perfect-can’t wait. Great vid, loved your guest as well-he definitely seemed super passionate about his snakes, so am I-and I can hella relate. I’d love to buy one from him if he’s still breeding them. 🤟🏾🐍

Awesome video! What a gorgeous snake. Socializing is so important, but I think having a proper, enriching enclosure is very important too. For example, Macklots Pythons (Clint, you met mine on our video chat) have a bad reputation. Historically people were keeping them like they would olive or water pythons and not realizing how intelligent and arboreal they are. With lots of climbing enrichment, my macklots is the most curious, friendliest snake I've got!

I'm a big reptile lover, and thus, your videos on different reptiles bring joy to me daily! I was just wondering, how can you differenciate between venom glands and jaw muscles? Assuming you run into a snake in the wild, and don't know the species, can you tell just by looking at them?

I think these snakes are beautiful and fascinating but I would not want to keep one , this is because even though this one on the video is very tame , there could be individuals that could be less tame that could bite me, so I would not risk getting one considering it has such large jaw muscles.

Thank you Clint for all these great videos. The way you educate the public is entrancing. I've described watching your show as blue's clues for adults because the knowledge base and the way your demeanor brings a smile to my face. I love that you describe both positives and the possible negatives of reptiles. Id be glad to know that a nighttime bite would be a mistake and probably the handler's fault.
