We discuss Emergency treatment for heating HAY bales that may become spoiled due to MOLD and spoilage. This is a how to guide for both the beginner or veteran farmer when attempting to salvage HAY bales when they have been baled up with too high of moisture content and are heating up and causing spoilage. This scenario typically causes the Bale to HEAT from the core causing bacteria to grow. This process causes MOLD to be produced which can ultimately deem the BALE non useable as a Livestock Feed source. The bale will typically heat up depending on how DAMP/WET it was when processed and baled up. This can not only cause MOLD to spawn but can also cause a BALE to COMBUST. This can happen once the bales core temperature hits around the 170 Farenheit mark and beyond. Now how high of a temp. the bale hits is directly related to the moisture content of that bale. Heating takes place and rises inside the bale, as it is attempting to dry out that bale from the inside out. Usually at this point you have already lost the bale due to severe MOLD and carmelization caused by the heat and bacteria. I discuss how the strategic use of LOOSE SALT can be utilized to attempt to preserve or salvage portions of that HAY bale. When SALT is properly placed inside of the bale before or at the beginning of heating process one can SOMETIMES prevents or greatly decreases the amount of MOLD being produced and spread inside the bale. Now this isn't a normal process or treatment for HAY however it can be used on occasion in an EMERGENCY to greatly decrease the amount of wasted HAY or feed if you did not have access to BALE wrappers or Silage equipment. You can also bale hay somewhat more damp successfully if you have a HAY preservative on your baler whether it be liquid form or granulated powder such as SILO GUARD. In this video we also GO OUT and make some WILD HAY bales, so lets get going we have a lot of information and ground to COVER!

yeah even making silage bales was a bit tuff this year the grass was under stress soba so early in June that the grass didn't have enough juice in it to properly ensile.

The salt should do the trick. I was thinking you should have a preservative applicator and then you have one.😂👍 I run the liquid on the square balers and would like to add it to the round baler. Gotta love those strange noises.😵🍻
@PrairieSunsetRanch
@PrairieSunsetRanch 2 года назад
My other baler has the applicator which was at home. All my equipment was way out of my area baling hay so jumped on that field last second. Never thought 3rd growth would come in so hot and heavy as to impair the drying of the second cut oats!😱 That knocking usually is indicative of a bearing going out but in this case it just had to let the gremlins out!🤣🤣 👍

I bale most my alfalfa hay at night. Baling during the heat of day all I get is sticks. Moisture tester would read 25-30% at times. Those are my best bales

My brother had 3 bales that were super tough. He was worried they would burn so he set them on the garden. Be damned if one didn't burn down.

@PrairieSunsetRanch 2 года назад
😯 Thats flipping hot for them to combust! Super curious what the temperature could have hit? Mine were VERY hot but climbed to around 162. 😱 Gotta keep a close eye on them, and really want to know as to what they look like inside when I unroll one here soon hopefully 👍

I've done the salt trick between layers stacking questionable small square bales. All the hay was good when I fed so it did something.

Nice carmelization, cows candy!!!!! Actually makes awesome feed, if it doesn't burn down the barn... We've pulled a few hundred bales out, spread them out to let them dry.. and salt the 💩 out of them!!!

You should have just used your bale spear a few times for the holes...or would that not work??
@PrairieSunsetRanch
@PrairieSunsetRanch 2 года назад
I have done that in the past but pending on the bale can make a little of a mess. These weren't necessarily wrapped the tightest. I knew they were probably gonna heat so I didn't want MASSIVE tight wrapped bales. Need it to sweat out a little so they were a lil sloppy. 👍

I really loved your video. It was intelligent, informative, and addressed a really important issue in a way that anybody could follow. But when I needed to get out of there before the end of the video, I had a hard time getting it to let me go- it kept popping up this little menu that I’ve never seen before to try to force me to subscribe. It did this three times before I could get out. That forced me to come back and give you a thumbs down and leave this message, simply because it wouldn’t be fair to give the thumbs down and not tell you why. I want you to know that you had earned a thumbs up for me before that though.

Interesting👍. I know my Great Grandparents would sprinkle loose salt in between the layers of square bales when stacking them in the dairy barn loft. That is probably how my grandfather, and father caught onto this trick with round bales.👌 Hows haying going for you now? Cheers 🍻 Albert.

@PrairieSunsetRanch
@PrairieSunsetRanch 2 года назад
Chit, that sucks. I noticed for example John Deere carries some "John Deere" brand bearings that are stamped made in China. I've had a couple of those fail in 3-400 bales on the baler.🤬
@jeremycherny2041
@jeremycherny2041 2 года назад
@@PrairieSunsetRanchalmost exactly what we had. Bought national bearings. Take the bearing out of the package. Stamped made in China. No national marking on the bearing at all. On the combine pick ups the center of the bearing split and the balls stayed together and were running right on the shaft. In the baler one bearing made about 250bales and just blew up and fell apart like it was 40years old
