I was contacted by BBC Radio Shropshire asking if I would be able to assist with repairing a clock for a very ill gentleman. Of course, I was happy to help.
The music in this video is courtesy of @wintergatan I strongly urge anyone who isn't familiar with his channel to head over and see his progress on building the most amazing mechanical marble music-making machine known as the MMX.

What a gentleman. Many clock makers would look down on such a clock. You recognised that it was dearly valued by its owner and treated it with the care and love it deserved. Bless you Tommy!

Thank you. This case was not about the clock itself. I have the tools and the knowledge so felt compelled to use them.

What a kind gesture an effort. You recognized that it was not about the clock. It was about its meaning. I’m certain, that your time and effort far exceeded it value, several times over. But to the owners, it is priceless. Good on you.

I think, this is what clock repairing should be like in a perfect world. You do it for the owner, not for the clock.

Just brilliant... people tend to forget that the older you get, the more sentimental you become. You brought joy back to that gentleman in a way that couldn't have been achieved by simply buying him a replacement clock, no matter how expensive the replacement might have been... and that's priceless. Bravo Tommy 👏 Also, a neat little bit of problem-solving using a 2nd motor for the 'pendulum' & adding the brass plate to cover it, knowing that it was likely to be going back onto a mantle piece where the motor would be readily visible. That's a true craftsman 👌

That was heart warming. Some times people place a high value on some thing that has little value to others. A true crafts person understand that and it make our world just a little bit better having people like you to help them.

I wonder how many of the repairers who turned this job down refused it because of the nature and character of this piece. Tommy you looked beyond that to the feelings of the people involved and I commend you for that. Very neat repair.

Top work Tommy! My Dad has a similar clock that he was given for long service at a company many years ago; I daresay it has no real monetary value but it is priceless to him.

How did the original quartz unit run the pendulum? I was one of the people who had to decline the work, my option was to get a spare clock from Ebay and cannibalise that. Glad you got it to work.
@TommyJobson
@TommyJobson 3 года назад
I suspect the original movement drove the pendulum with an integral motor, same idea as this but the motor and clock movement being in one unit. I’ve never seen one so I’m not entirely sure. It’s not my normal type of work I have to admit.
@MBarnell7
@MBarnell7 3 года назад
Most used a tiny fork which acted on the suspension spring. They were just like a mechanical one but the pendulum had no affect on the timekeeping obviously. It's a shame they don't make the movements anymore as I too get asked if I do them and while I've done a few using the method Tommy has, its very time intensive and hit or miss. It makes the repair very uneconomical, if actually possible.

My mum had a quartz clock that drove the pendulum via a suspension spring. Quite a clever unit that I very much doubt is still made today.

@@markuk7935 Very true. The clock stayed on display in my house for ten years years. That’s when I decided it was no long art and was now junk. Perception is a true state of mind.
