The way Boone talks about Harbaugh really shows just how much he respects the man. The look in his eye when he talks about his time being coached by him is pure nostalgia.

All I want for Xmas is an OLC talk with Jim Harbaugh at the Combine. 1 hour. All 3 of these guys (who balance into such a nuanced chemistry) and the man. I know it’s impossible, but it would immediately be the greatest football coach interview ever. Harbaugh probably wouldn’t even have time to think about the ask and contemplate the potential, but it would be a legendary interview. People at the top of any world Know how rare it is to find someone who’ll ask truly meaningful questions from the perspective of people who know to ask them, and the history and passion of Alex, and the thoughtful insight of Jeremiah, and the measured flow navigation of Mackey… and the casual relaxedness of the fairly underground OLC outfit… it could really unlock some truly special genius and love for the game that most media interaction simply couldn’t. When the Question already understands more than most Answers do, some real answers become possible. Just a thought.

@@georgeblunt4453 I think a national media figure representing a multi-billion dollar corporation needs and has been trained by the best to provide public speech that meets everyone’s needs, as seen by their employers. This remains absolutely true for people we imagine to be “rebels” or “free spirits” or iconoclasts. He’s not a stupid guy, and he’s very adept at business. He’s been operating at the highest levels of massive corporate interests (including Michigan, which while an educational one is still a massive corporate structure) In fact, half of That kind of being very adept at business is being so organically authentic-seeming that there’s no hint of business image variables in your process of deciding what to say. So it’s not just a matter of asking questions someone would like to answer. It’s a matter of having the insight to understand the Unexploited areas of the space they Can operate within, the things they Can say but nobody ever cares about. (but half of it is coming in with a keen knowledge of what they Can say, because every question that colors outside those lines is a waste of time. so it’s not just questions that cover unexplored ground, but also an understanding of what ground nobody can explore)

@@purplepainforumsthat would definitely be something to not put someone in a position of answering, at least not without notice and permission. asking questions in a context where they can’t be answered in a way that is Safe, Sincere, and Meaningful, puts the answered choosing between: - lying - being conspicuously evasive - an empty non-answer - a refusal to discuss and putting a guest in a position where those are their choices is not only disrespectful but guest-damaging, and thus relationship-damaging. It’s the question you ask if you don’t care if it’s the last question they ever trust you to ask. So, if before the interview, let’s like “let’s go full Katt Williams on the NFL” then fine. Otherwise, it’s either a middle finger to the guest or naively stupid.

@@nsn5564A lot of the foundational fans here, we’ll probably all of them originally a year ago, are Vikings fans because this grew out of the biggest Vikings podcast called Purple Daily, which Phil (on the left here) co-anchors with 2 other guys. The PD guys knew Boone from some fun interviews with him back when he played for the Vikings, and so during the 2022 season Phil and Alex started a weekly PD breakout episode with just them called “Trenches with Boone”, that’s heavily focused on laying out the science of operation within the offensive line which, contrary to most people’s imagination, is probably the unit with the most mentally complex task set on the field. So they analyze film and look at how defenses and offenses play the chess game in the trenches, and where players and plays win and break down …but then also talk about player life in the league off the field, in practice, in career. One day Jeremiah sat in, because Jeremiah knows Alex from when they both played guard for the Vikings, and the chemistry was amazing and the content was fascinating. A few of us had already been saying “this is much more than a PD breakout episode. this has potential to blow the minds of fans across the league, because there’s nobody dropping science and sharing behind-the-scenes insights like this”. Sure there’s other current pro podcasts and ex-pro podcasts, but this is another thing. So, because of our brilliant vision shared in the you tube comments (just kidding) these three guys quietly - with literally zero promotion or mention anywhere, even on PD - started this OLC podcast, and it’s been amazing as expected. There’s sort of a Minnesota sensibility to it, which is hard to explain, but Phil’s a lifelong Minnesotan sports journalist, and Alex liked MN so much that he and his wife settled down here to raise their kids, and Jeremiah lives in Nebraska for reasons nobody understands, but that’s still cornfield midwest (just without it the civilization part) so close enough. Jeremiah and Alex are both real thinkers and have amazing rapport from their friendship and professional relationship as guards with the Vikings, and both have their histories with other teams before and after the Vikes. - Jeremiah came out of college ball at Nebraska and played first for the Chargers before MN and the Panthers and Bills after, and now runs an agency he co-founded with a peer, representing and coaching NFL players and prospects through their careers from a veteran perspective - Alex came out of Ohio State and originally played for the 49ers where he started the 2012 Superbowl under Harbaugh, in a year of insane offensive line play and a couple weeks after setting the postseason record for most combined offensive yards in a game. After MN, Boone actually started a season for the Cardinals and then Retired for two years and then Came Back (!!!) for a year with the Seahawks because he’s a madman. He also does crazy triathlete sht swimming with sharks off of Alcatraz because of course. Oh yeah: he helps run a developmental training facility for offensive linemen that is coincidentally very close to the Vikings facilities (but trains all kinds of people working toward the league …and maybe In the league?) So the thing evolved to become something more complex than the also-awesome Trenches with Boone which still exists and still rocks - the film study aspect became all the film breakdowns in the OLC - the insider talk about player / tram / career life became OLC’s “Dumb Football Questions” (where they answer insider questions randos like us ask in the comments) - there’s the “Who’s the Mike” segment at the start where the guys just bring a person (or group) or two of interest in football that week to talk about - and, in a world where fantasy football is focused on “skill position” (lol) players, they’re developing a trenches-based version of the same thing where individual offensive line players And entire offenses are drafted and given points for results that the line directly influences. It’s in its early stages, as is their way of talking about it and forming it into a visualizable story, but it’s brilliant and nobody else is doing it So, apparently this ended up just being an essay/ode about the show for anyone interested, but that’s how I see it, and I’m definitely not affiliated because they have zero idea I exist. Regardless, check it out, and check out the Trenches with Boone episodes too, especially the first few months of the original 2022 episodes, where Boone builds up line-v-line play concepts from the ground up. He just drops science because Phil didn’t know. Once Phil was up to speed, the basics stopped getting discussed as much when they moved to more complex stuff, which is a bummer because the fact that Phil knows doesn’t mean the random person arriving at the podcast knows. So those first few months of Trenches with Boone were like football / film analysis boot camp for the noob. People from all the other fanbases are here watching more and more though, and it’s cool to have you. I’m sure it won’t be long before this thing is properly national and known by many around the league. Skol

Much depends on the front office. That was the key to KC getting it right. Finding the right balance between delegation and participation of the head coach in player personnel. Andy Reid has a great eye for talent, but he relies on Brett Veach to survey the talent and opposing-team-needs landscape, and winnow things down to a manageable number of players to look at. I've seen times when the HC said things like "If I'm cooking dinner, I should get to shop for the groceries!" when they didn't like the players the GM was giving them to work with. I've also seen times where the HC insists on this or that player, or takes a "special interest" in one or two positions, and the GM tries to work with him, but the coach doesn't see the whole picture, and isn't as good a talent scout as he thinks he is. Over the years, I wouldn't say that the Bolts' coaches were the problem. To me, they always had a top-heavy team with more stars but less depth. Nobody can stop Keenan Allen, but how many games will he play? Maybe this has changed, but I think the Bolts also (used to?) have really stringent guidelines for what they were willing to pay a player on his 2nd contract.

I remember Harbaugh playing for the run-first Bears, and how hard it was to play QB, with not a lot of weapons, but a great defense and great running. He knew he was going to take a beating behind that line, but he understood that the ugly was down payment on a small number of shot plays that had to be taken. Dilfer got a bad rap for playing on a similarly-built team, years later. Most of the great coaches will just run it down your throat if they can. Harbaugh's known for that, but - no disrespect to Alex, who was compromised by bad doctors - he's never had a QB as good as Herbert. Herbert may be on par with Patrick Mahomes, for all I know, but he's never had a complete team down the stretch.

This is the energy I thought we were going to get when I thought we were hiring Harbaugh. I'm legit excited for the Chargers, but at the same time I'm pissed off all over again that we said no to this guy to hire captain culture. Look at all the accomplishments of Harbaugh, at every level, and all the QB's he's elevated, and then compare that to a guy like KOC who has never done anything anywhere at any level. He hasn't elevated a single QB anywhere he's been. He's never won anything. He's never developed his own offense. Never called plays. All he did was fetch coffee for McVay, and I just can't get over the fact that we hired him over Harbaugh. I just don't get it.
