Emergency Landing on Cargo Ship Alra by Sea Harrier ZA176
Remarkable news footage on the recovery of Sea Harrier ZA176 and Sub-Lt Ian Watson after the Alraigo docked in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, June 1983.
.
In 2007, Britain's National Archives released a number of Royal Navy files, and the second inquiry report was finally made public. Noting that Watson had completed only 75 percent of his training before he had been sent to sea, the board blamed Watson's inexperience, and his commanders for assigning him an airplane "not fully prepared for the sortie," a reference to radio problems. Nonetheless, Watson was reprimanded and given a desk job.

Reprimand and desk job are what the news was told to say to keep with the early 1980's public opinion & stiff upper lip of the then ex-forces & old walrus moustaches of WW2/Korea/Suez/Malaya eras still alive back then quiet - aka a cover to lessen media back-lash before/while secret negotiations for recovering the aircraft.

You can't guarantee he would have died if he'd ditched it. Besides, he easily could have killed himself and potentially some of the crew of that ship, severely damaged the ship or it's cargo, etc. It's a damn impressive landing, but i can understand why his superiors are a little unhappy at the result, to say nothing of the diplomatic and "salvage" concerns.

He landed on a foreign vessel. A British military aircraft on a foreign ship. Abandoned at sea could be considered salvage and thus the property of the ship-owners had they made such a claim. Unless he stayed in the cockpit, which he did not......just to illustrate the complications that 'saving the plane' caused. He lost his ship. That is all that needs to be said.

I read that he was given a desk job for a while then put back on flight status. He eventually racked up 2000 hours in harriers and must have done an exchange program with the USN because he also did 900 hours in f18's. He retired in 2006. The harrier was also repaired and kept flying. So good result.

Just curious though, but what do Air Force pilot suppose to do when they stuck behind the desk? Don't military have their own specific personnel to do desk duty(office work, I presume)?
@stupidburp
@stupidburp 7 лет назад
Desk work for military pilots could involve a variety of duties but some of the most common ones would be managing maintenance, managing personnel of lower rank, and organizing training. They would still have to do at least a few hours of flight during a year to stay qualified but the majority of their duties could be on the ground.

@SilentRazor1uk
@SilentRazor1uk 7 лет назад
It was likely his I.N.S. or it was a radio failed, since the old system used in the 'pre-elcteronic' early harriers & sea harriers uses one the radios to keep a rough fix on the ship - that and the RN-FA uses/used a Morse Code Positioning Beacon system to indicate the aircraft's relative position to the carriers heading.

The electronics can go out at any time and the pilot made the right decision to save himself and by GOD he even saved the plane , heck there's people who get disoriented and lost on the Ground and some because their smart phones dies out or malfunctions , , , the pilot saved the British Government a lot of money by saving plane and himself . . . It's not the first time or the last that a pilot will find themselves in a bad situation with only minutes or seconds to decide their fate . . . TO THE PILOT , , , YOU DID SOMETHING THAT WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS . . . WELL DONE ! ! !

Interesting story... the plane was saved and went on to fly until 2003. It takes a little research but the pilot was initially sent off to desk duty until it was determined it was equipment failures and that the pilot was sent out on a training mission after only completing about 75% of his required training. The pilot later went on to fly about 2000hrs in Harriers and about 900 in F-18s before he retired after about 25 yrs total service.

Salvage? It's not like Spain and the UK were enemies, just give the plane back and ask for compensation for any damage or loss of earnings from having to return to port. The international community is a strange one.

***** Please change your tampon. You are obviously correct, international salvage law is clear, there is no doubt about that. They ended up getting around 600K pounds for a 7 million pound aircraft. However, being correct doesn't entitle you to being a raging jackass. You lashed out at someone for no reason who was being polite and had a an actual question. You could have just explained the issue without insulting them. Being able to use Google properly doesn't give you the right to be an asshole. Fucking POG's....Never thinking shit through all the way.

Being short translates into a shorter distance between your heart and your brain,which means you can better withstand G forces.So for pilots,it's a bit of an advantage.
