I've always wondered why when these irish coastguard helis takeoff they hover low, drop down as if they are about to land then shoot up again.. is it some kind of system in the heli or what causes that?
I think its to do with the pressure and engine power power to see if they can actually take off on throttle. Its not so much noticeable in the smaller choppers
Bounce into ground effect, as they take off they come to a hover height of 10ft, check all systems then bounce into the cushion of air under them it helps.
