We finally untie the lines and leave the harbor! The maiden voyage of our historic trawler was a big adventure.
We had some engine problems and not everything worked out according to plan.
However we really enjoyed the first journey on our huge steel boat!
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Flying Coney wasn't built with a bow or stern thruster, and whilst they would greatly assist manovering, they are not cheap to install. Give Daniel all the credit!. There are video's of him manovering the boat precisely in and away from the dock without one!

It was nice to see Barbara in a dress during her narration. Good luck on the beginning of your adventures. Shout out to the volunteers for all their expertise and hard work.

I love that dress too! It's quite hard to find dresses that fit her shape. It's important for us that Flying Coney is a learning platform and we did learn a lot from our volunteers. But when it comes to rope handling and maneuvering I'm sure they also learned quite a lot.

It will be good to keep track of temperatures and pressures as you get more familiar with the engine under load. Barbara is certainly up to that task. Great job Captain, Chief Engineer and crew 👍
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
I think the video shows how cautious we are and that we really try not to damage anything. After all it was just a bit of oil and residue forming a bit of smoke in the engine room. We constantly checked the temperature of the engine and we were a bit surprised how cold the water was that returned from the keel cooling. We just need to get familiar with Flying Coney. Thanks for your comment!

As a note, you can never take a mooring in front of behind a lock. Those mooring places are only for boats waiting to use the lock. Good job asking the lock keeper for permission, however, the answer will always be no. Also it is always best to have breakfast before setting off. I tell my crew when we will depart in the morning, the coffee is fresh beforehand and it is their responsibility to eat or not. Bon voyages!
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
Well last time we waited for over two hours to be finally forwarded through. Always empty there and the commercial barges sometimes make fast for a few hours. Must be different regulations. There also was a reason why we left without the breakfast. It was forecasted that the wind picking up and getting out from the berth was a bit tricky. Not enough water underneath the keel and a stone wave breaker in case you mess it up.

In the Netherlands it's sometimes possible but it really depends. So in my experience (I sail on the bruine vloot) you should always assume a no and if you ask nicely you sometimes get a yes but usually you have to have a good reason for it.

It was good to discuss the procedure for docking with the crew. There are many issues for the crew to become familiar with. It is a great opportunity to test each other In maritime operations learning. Having fun while learning. Plenty of food and coffee. Cheers to you all!

Exactly. It's the whole purpose of the Flying Coney project to provide a learning platform and to teach skills. For example how to handle slightly larger docking lines or how to maneuver a boat without a bow thruster.

Since its a single screw ship have you guys ever thought about retrofiting a bow thruster into the hull? Its got to make handling a ship that size in port much less demanding.

Maybe paint/sealant/grease burning off of hot engine parts set off the smoke detector? Congrats on using paper navigation, but is a chart plotter in your future? It would be interesting to see the journey on charts. Also, what is the reason for the change of ports; is this part of a cruise or a destination for a project - or something else?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
We rescued a wooden trawler and needed to be there. It's generally the right direction. But we are a floating refit so we are stationary most of the time. But from time to time a change in location is great. We did a lot of maintenance work on the engine so grease and oil residues burning off the engine is possible. Also the smoke alarm is new. We do use our iPad as a chart plotter. Since we have paper charts and a proper gps right at the moment we don't need a chart plotter. Bridge electronics are always the last purchase since it ages fast.

With a vessel the size of Flying Coney + weight + sail area, you need a Bow Thruster (unfortunately), however this will allow the two of you to operate this vessel alone.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
Actually under engine it's not too difficult to operate the boat on our own. Since we have a large draft and Flying Coney is quite heavy, things happen slowly. She's big for a yacht but many commercial ships of a similar size are operated by just two people. At least here in the Netherlands.

The keel cooler should remain cold with no circulation until the thermostat opens indicating the engine is up to temperature. Perhaps you have other loads on the cooling system such as water heaters (calorifiers) which prevent the engine getting up to temperature? Possibly you need more thermostat valves to get the engine up to temperature quickly, then divert water to the water heaters, then when the water heaters & central heating are up to temperature it finally uses the keel coolers.

Glad, there wasn't a major problem with the engine, really good to see her on the move, outvof intrest would a bow or stern thruster be something you might think about fitting, or would it be of no use for her future use
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
Actually not many sailing ships have bow thrusters. But it would't be difficult to retrofit one since we already have a strong hydraulic system. In any case it's more a nice to have than a real necessity.

Hi Barbara, love your channel and what you are doing to rejuvenate flying coney. Can I ask a favour from a viewer being in Australia. I would like to ask if you could feature something like a travel map, I struggle with the pronunciation of your country names and was wondering if you would start with a map saying this is where you are now and this is where we are going. The reason I ask is because I want to to follow your route as well as the journey of flying coney, plot it for my self on a map at home and look up places and ask you interesting questions along the way. Some stuff that you would take for interest may be of significance for other. Just a thought

The boat doesn't have to stop for the crew to eat. Get a bow thruster otherwise your going to look really silly when docking such a heavy boat.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
You look silly when the bow thruster dies down or the wind is to strong and you can't maneuver your boat without one.

i have a question could one person operate a boat like yours alone if some of the stuff like anchor and sails were done by electronics (Drum Winch or Windlass and other things like that) mostly asking because i have been thinking about getting a boat but there's only me lol

@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 2 месяца назад
Don't underestimate the labor involved in the upkeep and the maintenance. Although it is possible to operate a boat of Flying Coneys size single handed it's difficult and only possible under engine. But if you have the money to pay people to do the maintenance you could possibly also afford a payed crew. My recommendation is always when you want to travel with a boat always stay underneath 15 or 49ft.
@Nerd3927
@Nerd3927 2 месяца назад
For me the sweet spot is around 9 meters and 5 tons to handle single handed. Anything bigger is possible but not enjoyable. On my current 11 meter steel boat of 12 ton I only sail with crew, and very little....
