I don't even remember this song. I LOVE ELP since I was a little girl back in the 80s. I was given a cassette of Mahavishnu Orchestra "Inner Mounting Flame" when I was 8 or 9 because I had found a cassette of The Dixie Dregs " Dregs of the Earth" a year earlier and my mom's boyfriend gave me the cassette. He said he hated it but he thought my pre teen jazz and jazz fusion obsessed 9 year old self would like it. I love it.
Today, in 2022 this is animal abuse. That poor tiger being in a loud & bright spotlight would cause the animal stress. This was many years ago & times were different, we do better when we know better. Greg Lake so young, well all membesr of the band were. My fav was Greg. And will always be Greg! I can never say enough nice comments about Greg. 😊❤
haha I love that the tiger was moving closer and closer to Greg. That was so adorable haha. But I think Greg was a little frightened. This was a really cool and interesting video. :)
To Spookypatchouli: No: Greg was not frightened, maybe just a little concerned, since I could detect a spirit of slight worry from the band. The tiger could have wrested the chains affixed to the platform. In actuality, it was more flimsy than it looked.
Didn't you notice the fade out at the end of the song? I think they dubbed it. That means the bulk of the sound was coming out of the PA speakers, up above and in front of the band. I also don't think Carl was hitting the bass drum, because the tiger would have felt it and I think his ears would have been twitching from it. I've got cats and that's just how they react to "thuddy" sounds. The hair in their ears really feels it. I think Carl was going through the motions, but not loud enough to um...anger the tiger. I was watching Greg and he didn't seem to be looking over at the tiger, so I think he knew the tiger was going to be calm. Maybe they made sure with a few test plays. I know I would. And did you notice, at the end of the song, the tiger had moved over close to Greg. He kind of smiled and backed up, as if he was going to let the tiger have that space for himself.
I tuned into this not realising there'd be an actual tiger in it, and now I've seen it I feel a bit embarrassed. I find it hard to believe that the tiger enjoyed that, it didn't look to me like it did (or that Greg felt safe being so close to it).
The song you're hearing was recorded before the synthesizer you're seeing but what you're seeing, the Yamaha GX-1, was a limited-production instrument with an unusual voicing arrangement and many first-of-its-kind and unique features. IMHO it was the most musical and versatile synthesizer anyone ever made. It was actually meant to be the top of its *electronic organ* line and came with a pedalboard and bench and a pair of powered speaker cabinets designed especially for it.
I always thought the GX-1 sounded budget and dated with not very many good patches. Their usage of Moog or Minimoog sounds far better. Moog really struck it big with their iconic VCO and the "oscillators never being completeley syncronized" glitch and it's always been music to my ears (literally). So I always listen to late ELP without Moog and I just think it would be so much better with the right patches on a Moog. Sadly, programming a Moog live is not as easy as GX-1 or other instruments that came after, so I understand they made the switch due to practicability.
@@LilHaseProductions The GX1 wasn't so much a "synthesizer" as they would be known (Oberheim 4-voice and up) as a church organ that used subtractive synthesis as its tone source (although it could also do additive like a Hammond does). Its filters were at the time unique to the GX1 (they would show up in the CS80 later). Honestly, I can't understand anyone listening to "Fanfare" or "Pirates" and calling the GX1 "budget." Moog wouldn't make a proper polyphonic synthesizer until 1982 (I say "proper" because the Polymoog was basically a transistor organ that tried harder to be more like a synthesizer) and they were late to the market. I assume the GX1 and its bespoke powered speakers were up and running in the studio; it would have been cool to hear what it would have sounded like to have Emerson playing "Tiger" on it instead of the Apollo and piano (in fact, you can hear just that on the IN CONCERT album).
@@hubbsllc I guess it's just a matter of perspective. I was born in 95 and growing up hearing early ELP sounded absolutely futuristic, but the keyboards after their greatest albums started sounding a bit budget, 80s and dated to me (despite it being very expensive, and mid 70s)
@@LilHaseProductions ELP's arc was basically a rush to burnout from 1970 to 1974: four studio albums, two live albums, several tours. At the end of that period, Emerson was touring with one Moog Modular of a size and sort no one made anywhere near as much use of in a live show, two Minimoogs, a piano, a kind of electric piano/pianet, two Hammonds, a Clavinet, and a couple of Moog prototypes analogous to the Polymoog and a Micromoog. He had done about as much with these instruments as he could do and after recovering from the relentless pace the band had been working at, there was a big gap in the synthesizer world: polyphony. Oberheim's SEM-module-based instruments were only just becoming available and the Prophet 5 wouldn't come out until 1978. So when Yamaha had these well-integrated all-in-one instruments that looked very impressive and had a lot of flexibility and a distinctive tonal palette, that's where he went. I think he picked up a Korg endorsement by the time LOVE BEACH was recorded and made use of a PS-3300. For ELPowell and the BLACK MOON reunion, sky was the limit and plenty of off-the-shelf polyphonic instruments got added on. But the GX1 was Emerson's biggest and baddest entry into polyphony and the Moog Apollo and Polymoog just wasn't going to cut it.
I realize this is an older comment, but laughing my as* off right now! You live up to your name morbid! Why do u think theyre not in the hall of fame? Just very curious!
0:24 - This 8-string Alembic is now on display at the Hard Rock Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The Stage Pass sticker would be added sometime after this performance.
Tiger probably just doesn't know wtf is going on and is used to Humans being weird and doing Human things. Doesn't look like he really cares much about it, but imo I also feel bad about it if it was an actual concert with loud drums and the usual ELP volume. But in this case I don't think it was.
I gotta say, Lake has got a *great* game face while singing considering how close that tiger got to him by the finish. OTOH maybe the tiger was just going to ask Greg for another toke on that joint or whatever drug they used to sedate him for this appearance!
I would be very scared and nervous playing in front of the tiger. Jesus, they have to be careful of that. However, great song of the band, one of my favorites.
There's a picture with the three of them and the tiger, Keith was holding her by the tail, Greg watched nervously from behind him and Palmer was already running away in fear of retaliation 😂
I think it's at least part live, because of the tiger's reaction to the keyboards. (Greg said he stood on the opposite side of the stage from Keith because the keyboards were even louder than the drums.) But I wish they had miked the tiger, too. :D
I noticed that one of the Yamaha GX-1’s bespoke powered speaker cabinets is visible behind Keith. I expect it was hooked up in this studio so he could hear himself play and it might have been *very* loud; the whole rig with a pair of those was meant to fill a large church.
Animals hearing is so much much higher than ours, for him to sit there must have been just awful. You can see how scared the animal is. Please people be more aware of things like this.
In 1968 Czesława Niemena i Akwarele they sang a song Płonąca Stodoła, few years later ELP was recorded in 1973, but not released until 1977 sounds for me similar in 60%
Yeah i really hate to say this but this isnt live The sound Keith gets out of that keyboard are impossible i believe because its a fully analog synth without any preset instrument sounds such as a piano and then all of a sudden without pressing anything, he gets a totally different sound Plus Carl hits the drums a few times and theres no sound
Poor Greg that beautiful animal that did not belong on the stage was getting very close to Greg and could nail Greg's ankle and do a lot of damage. Someones stupid idea and the animal will be punished if anything goes wrong.
Greg sang beautifully as usual, but gave a subdued performance, especially since he must have been apprehensive about the tiger that was getting closer and closer to him
Absolutely. People do forget that animals hearing is much , much more sensitive to sound than humans, and it breaks my heart to see this poor Tiger having to sit there with drums playing directly behind it. The guitar and keyboards are unplugged, but Carl is playing those drums.
Humans do similar things with underwater explosions. Also, shining brilliant artificial lights from submersibles, on to creatures living 1.5 to 6.0 kilometres or more, below the limit that sunlight can penetrate to in the oceans... :(
yes even live they could not be exactly like record for example the song from the bigining you hear the soli just in acoustic guitar and they had in 90 some orchestral and keabord from box.thas while pink floyd in 80 and 90 had aditional musicians. just rush as trio have all like record.and black sabbath had some keabords and back vocals from the box .nevertheless ELP one of the best band ever.keith and gregg are joining the eternity. good journey.
So many "woke" comments, yet nobody noticed that the tiger is still a "kitten",hardly a ferocious beast. As to the song, one of the things I like best about ELP is their versatility, Keith could jam the ragtime and was blessed with mates who encouraged it.
I love ELP but I think this is DISGUSTING!!!!!! The Tiger MUST be free in the wild not unchained for the purpose of fuckin humans ! I really I'm shocked that ELP allowed this shit!!!
