When I see these guys and others of that generation I think... wow I can t believe there was ever a time in our history when we were all so innocent and music was our prime motivator. God bless rock and roll!
Saw them in Dallas in '72. They opened with this song! Saw them again in '74. Guess what, they opened with this song!! Saw them again in '76 and of course they opened with this song!!!
At the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, where a caesium fountain clock measures time with an uncertainty of 1 second in 300 million years, a technician says "Hey boss, I think our clock's out a bit." The Chief Scientist replies "Check with Carl Palmer."

Used to watch Peter Gunn with my father. This was the coolest theme music of that era. Emerson, Lake and Palmer's interpretation took it right out of this world. Awesome stuff.
This is such a GREAT piece of music that every version of it is SOOOO EXCELLENT. From orchestra, tuba, sax, guitar, bass to Emerson's twisted keyboard treatments, Mancini truly wrote something universally hypnotic, exciting, funky, threatening, around just a one chord song with an 8 note riff.
That song was played at max volume on every high dollar stereo bought from 1977 to 1985 or so. I could hear my neighbors monster Pioneer with 4 speaker and 540 watts playing this from about 1/4 mile away. Good times.
A friend of mine had a pair of Advent self powered speakers 2 hundred watts each powered by a Carver preamp . I could hear them two blocks away. Karnevil 9 so loud you could feel it the next day.

Emerson's keyboard sound were so tasteful, soothing to the ear unlike those very harsh KB sounds others make. ELP' music was center around Keith's sound. The magnificent drums and vocals were the icing to the cake! ELP forever!!
what "others"? lol. You're funny. This is pretty harsh sounding for a synth. That Yamaha he used is known for that!! Palmer has time and Idea issues.. he is also now ruining what little legacy that they had left.
average at best. Keith had several great moments. Greg had a beautiful voice. Palmer can't keep time and has bad Ideas, and composers... not so much. You don't think keith orchestrated his "piano concerto" do you? he didn't. and that was derivative.
Well said. This is still one of the best pop songs of all time. It's transcended so many genres of music so easily. Although I think Carl pushes the song a little too hard here. Palmer gotta Palmer! Great band.
I loved these three boys so much and always will. Only three men, who could create a gigantic hurricane of great music. So powerful! In this they have remained unmatched. And what do we have today, compared to then? Lots of junk! At least we older people from the 70s era can make comparisons. I would say the technologies have improved but the heart and soul of the music has lost a lot.
I largely agree with your viewpoint, but remember each generation thinks their music was the best. Your kids will someday roll their eyes in disbelief at your generation's tastes, just as you thought 50's music was hopelessly hokey and stale
They were on some TV show back in the early 70s and the piano was elevated and rotating. He was strapped into it and he was rotating around playing the piano. It was wild.
The first "Prog Rock" song I heard. I remember my father blasting this song early in the morning while he was taking me to primary school back in the late 90's. It's also a very radio friendly ELP tune, perfect for newcomers to the band: The announcer introduces the band while Keith with those keyboards lets you know that this won't be like any other rock song you heard before.
Back around 1970, I was 13 at the time, visiting my grandmother in Asbury Park, NJ, & was hanging out near the coliseum, when a green limo pulled up, & ELP got out & went in, being 13, I didn;t go in, but did stay outside & listened to the whole show, what a night!!
Three Gods of music came down from Mount Olympias and they were Keith Emerson, Greg Lake & Carl Palmer! I was blessed to live in that time they were here. Saw them in concert 3 times. Once with their Full Orchestra. And one concert the Peter Gunn Theme was the opening song as they rose out of the stage. My brain pattern is the music of E, L, & P.
I was lucky enough to see them seven times in the 1970s they were incredible rest in peace Keith Emerson I was so heartbroken when he committed suicide I feel very lucky to see them as many times as I did!
Yes! Peter Gunn! I love playing music for my 6 mo old grandsons, twins. Put on Peter Gunn and got frowns and od looks. Played Baby Elephant Walk and they started giggling immediately! Toooo funny. Such emotion and personality to music. Have to try some Pink Floyd today
I want a time machine to go back to the time when music was AWESOME !!! Recorded on August 26, 1977 at the Olympic Stadium, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, album released in 1979. Similar to most live albums, In Concert featured fan favorites of previously released material. However, "Peter Gunn", ELP's take on the classic TV themed song, was never published on any of their other albums (a slightly edited version of this live recording was included in the compilation The Best of Emerson, Lake & Palmer of 1980 and published in certain countries). ELP often opened with this song during the Works Volume 2 tour. The group hired an orchestra of 70 musicians for some concerts on this tour, but ultimately had to fire the orchestra due to budget constraints that almost bankrupted the group.
Last time I seen Emerson Lake and Palmer was at the Seattle Kingdom I believe it was in '78 great show it was The Works tour when they did Fanfare for a common man I loved it I still listen to that song all the time along with about all the other ones that they've ever made
King, Maneige, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Eberard Weber, Gentle Giant, Plume Latraverse, thé Cure... Mes Salutations, Éric L.
Keith every year we are dancing our brains out on "peter gunn theme" on carnaval in sas van gent holland. This tradition started because of my birthday. My brother asked the barkeeper to play this record. Since then it became a tradition in cafe de rijnvaart while the carnaval is going on. So dear Keith rest in peace and THANK YOU for the music
heard many different covers for peter gunn theme but this has to be the best.....R.I.P. emerson and lake. just waiting on palmer for that ultimate jam session in the sky..
Temazo !!! 👍
I saw them on the Works tour once with the orchestra then again as JUST ELP trio. They were SO great the music sent shivers up and down my spine. I almost cried each time I heard Keith Emerson and Greg Lake had died. The music will live forever. On the EIGHTH day, GOD created ELP!
On the original Henry Mancini recording, the pianist was a studio musician who went by Johnny Williams. He went on to follow Maestro Mancini as the premier film score composer of his era. Yep, that John Williams. I'm very grateful he's still active.
After , my friends older brother turned me onto ELP , I was hooked ! The three of us , got to see them at the Spectrum in PHILLY ! Now that was a Show !
A "Cult Classic Song" from the TV show back in the mid '60s. The Blues Brothers do a FANTASTIC job too......with lots of good solid BRASS!!! GIVE IT A LISTEN!!
