Magnificent! There will never be another group like them. It is a crime that ELP are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

To: Too many cats: I agree with you. They should have been in since 1995, and especially now that two are no longer with us -- combined with a posthumous dedication and tribute which will reflect upon the greatest of this gargantuan band. Keith should also take an award at the Grammies in the classical genre. This is certainly a crime -- a bigger criminal they will make of me if they are not enshrined in the very near future.

Excellent !!! I am sure they will when new generations realize this techno babel of today is really shallow music with no art form what so ever.

I love Keith's Karn Evil intro, especially about my favorite Impression. "...3rd Impression deals with the evolution of creativity...starting from the Stone Age and working right through to the computers where we are now, and the answers are up to you."

They found, I guess, in the opening of First Impression Part 1 that the key of A as recorded was a bit too high for Greg to sing night in in and night out on the road, so they lowered it a step and a half to F sharp. Between 4:22-4:30 they insert a quick modulation upwards to get into the key of A because that is the real key of the song. I believe they kept it that way in all future performances, until they cut it even further by making the looped synth A (9:12 here) that connects the 1st and 2nd Impressions the standard opening for their shows, right through to their final show ever at the High Voltage Festival in 2010. A very effective way to open a concert, but much fine music was lost in the process as the opening and the jam section of First Impression were ELP at their most brilliant. Wonderful to hear this early live version in full, thanks Chris.

Love this. I think this was the same year they played @ Cape Cod Coliseum. My family was vacationing on the cape that summer - and I kept hearing radio ads for this show...it was driving me absolutely nuts..I was pretty young (15?) - but I did have amazing musical taste. Anyway - my parents on a whim - decided to drive us there - to cape cod coliseum from wherever we were on the cape. We get there and they said -- "Well --- dammit - just go see your ELP!!!" problem was - us kids had no idea where the folks were draggin us. So I had just jumped into the winnebago with no shoes. Left them at the campground umm hmm. No sneakers. I'm Freakin barefoot. So Mom told me to just wear dad's shoes into the show. (That would have been a fine look, um hmm.) I opted to NOT go in. I've since read reviews saying the venue was not that good. And it would have been that much worse for me - in my dad's shoes twice the size of my feet... and his shoe styling was really not all that appealing. So that's my story. I did however catch ELP several times after this (over next several decades) ------- but dang 1973/74 would have been special!! :-)

@@steverodgers8425 my issue was not underwear... it was i was gonna have to wear my dad''s shoes. In retrospect, i probably should have worn my dad's shoes. Yep. But hey... somewhere i found a story about a cab driver that picked up ELP that very night (from cape cod collusseum). Sounds like they were quite pompous. An annoying trio that was upset that the cabbie didn't know who they were. Anyway - i'm a keyboard guy and keith was a major influence in my life. I'll just leave it there.

@@tdm1995..." quite pompous. An annoying trio that was upset that the cabbie didn't know who they were." HAHAH...I BET they were annoying. Sometimes it's best NOT to meet your heroes. I met Keith in 2006 and he was awesome then. Eddie Jobson 2010 or 2012 or maybe both times. He was cool. I'm a keyboard guy too. Hugh Banton was ok too. I remember one guy being a bit of an arse but he wasn't the 'real deal' player anyway. Basically a tribute act. Never met Tony Banks and it's possibly better I hadn't. Anyway, awesome crazy story about your early ELP experience. I was a fan of the ELP music when I was 11 about the time of this tour.

the thing is, the tempos fly all over the place. both Emerson and Palmer tend to rush sometimes, but at different times. But the raggedness is appealing because the music is so admirable

Greg Lake can't always hit the high vocal parts he did on the album cut (which began in the key of A-flat minor). For live performances, only the sections without vocals remain in the original key (A-flat major).

Interesting that Keith plays the middle horn section on 3rd impression on the organ instead of the moog constellation. Maybe it wasn't working that night on this song? The chorus moog lines are still played on the modular moog.
@johncurtis2112
@johncurtis2112 2 года назад
The Apollo (polyphonic portion of the Constellation) was notoriously fritzy during this tour. Eventually, he often played that same section on just the Lyra with no LH part. I think it sounds wonderful on the Hammond: if you haven't seen it, check out this footage of them rehearsing that segment on Hammond (starting around 3:15)- I think it sounds much better; the harmonies are richer on the organ (and in the original key - already transposed down for live in Boston). I think the urge to use the polyphonic Moog overtook the better of expression of the segment. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p3zOB-nP5nk.html (4 years after the original comment! I hope you still catch it.)

Attending concerts like this back then made a bigger impression on me and my friends than anything today. I saw ELP in 1973 in Tampa, but they did not have that incredible H.R. Giger painting backdrop, oh well. Emerson was wearing his wonderful armadillo suite, which made him look like an alien, and had bat wings on his Modular Moog, so there were some great visuals to go along with their amazing music. The concert had a big impression on me and made me want to learn keyboards. Here's a piece I did for my second album which is inspired by Emerson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ljnCb1F2t7s.html

last comment -- they're clearly still getting it together (the audience response seems to indicate it's pre album release), but it's not there yet. Sample and Hold weird for pt 2 intro. different chords in pt 1. Way better at (for instance) California Jam later. Total props and respect, just a critique...
