Of all the many configurations J. McL has played in, this "Heart of Things" line up is one of my all time faves! Some droids complained J. McL didn't solo enough. I think he was somewhat influenced by Weather Report's ensemble playing where the entire band runs through extended arrangements together vs. just solo'ing over chords. And of course, like Miles, he was influenced compositionally as well as the spirit of Duke Ellington. Everyone on this tour is a monster in their own right - Jim Beard - kb, Gary Thomas - sax, Matthew Garrison - bs. (son of Jimmy Garrison, Coltrane's bass player), Mr. DC - Dennis Chambers - perf. and the Maestro, J. McL. It's so great to be able to see these concerts live with great sound. God Bless You Tube!
All the musicians are amazing and solo phenom...but I would like a bit more Solo from the grand master him self I must admit..Thanks for info, fascinating.
Agree, in fact this is probably my favorite JM band since the original Mahavishnu Orchestra line up. Another one I really dig was his short lived 1994 Trio project, The Free Spirits - w/ Dennis Chambers and Joey DeFrancesco. Their live at Blue Note Tokyo is an amazing record.
Tu es une vraie encyclopédie ,je suis aussi un vrai fan de jazz fusion..miles etc.. j'ai découvert dernièrement une bassiste (Mohini Dey) Elle va cartonner.
Dennis the menace on the drum set. Grooves that define a genre, and solos that make you wonder if he's been genetically enhanced lol. Mclaughlin's playing here and his whole life's work is something to really admire.
To have a band like this with great skilled, disciplined, well trained musicians.... is something only Masters like John Mc Laugling, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa, and few others could afford in the past, and I don't see anyone for the future right now.
One of my favourite pieces of all time. When I play it on my drums either with others or all alone I am transportted to a whole new realm. It seems to feed my soul, my intellect and my physical health. Some of this jazz stuff is quite the workout on a kit of drums.
hoLee SHIt! This is outstanding stuff.... I have all these old LP's in crates still! Young people.... LISTEN...... you are seeing the one of the best drummers EVER. They all look like they are having a ball...
once more on youtube: the mastery of dennis chambers! those single hand sixteenths on the ride are ballistic, i love them!! but that's the first time i see him play a three piece kit ;-)
I saw this Tour in Cambridge U.K ~ The Band were held up in a traffic jam and arrived late, crowd ushered out of the hall so they could Soundcheck. I watched them run through a couple of numbers through a window in the door. Crowd let back in. John seemed unhappy and uncomunicative, and I swear they ran through the tunes real fast so much so that it was hard to grasp what they were doing, (going through the motions at hyperspeed?) I'm greatfull for this upload to get a grip on what I missed!
Hart of things! What an album! What a line up! John's sound in this period with the Johnny Smith guitar was SOO good! This music still makes me happy after more than 20 years! Dear John THANKS!
Dors anyone know the set up for John's tone in this band? It fits the style like a glove, thick... There's some kind of chorus... Same set up when he played with Dennis and deFrancesco. Love the tone of those records
What a brilliant concert, this is true musicianship. I have seen JMcL with 4th Dimension live @ Leverkusener Jazztage in 2012, and he hasn't lost the slightest bit of his aura...
That's got to be the smallest kit Dennis has played since he was a kid. And it's lovely to see the legendary Jimmy Garrison's son Matthew holding it down with great style.
Gary Thomas - sax, flute Dennis Chambers - drums magnificos, que pena no hizo mas música asi, me hace acordar a Mahavishnu pero mas refinado con to Miles Davis.
When I heard groovemaster Dennis played the late 1980 Mahavishnu reformat it sounded interesting. Never was much Mahavishnu fan in 70s. Jim Beard I probably knew his style an Matt the pedigreed bassist from Herbie's future2future video. This group is slamming! I did like Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist LP 70s so the man is a Master.
Every thing has its purpose (prices, transport etc etc...), but when it comes to the top stars and their performances, there should not be place for hip or not to hip stuff. Timeless values are quite obvious.
Yes I agree. Scofield, while a master, saw him with Adam Nussbaum on drums back in '87, that sound tends to give me listener fatigue. mJohnny Mac just always seems so alive. Remember "Electric Dreams, Electric Sighs". But I agree. Thanks for your insight dude. Quite smart.
Amazing. Maybe an even better band than Johnny's current one which is saying something. Fascinating to see Dennis using such a small kit - and check out his awesome Cobham groove at 32:40
Hi everybody! May anyone tell me who is the bassplayer, please? I didnt see it in the begining of the video. Im a brazilian bassist, I think this guy is a very good player and must be, of course, to play with JM, DC & CIA. Thanks a lot!
