Beyond words... Incomprehensible, perfect. Brought back the childhood memories when I was listening to these recordings on LPs. Gilels' Beethoven has all the components: passion, grace, brilliance, profundity. He brings about freshness and philosophy on top of that. Could serve as a manual of how Beethoven should truly played. Except for if his style (immediately recognisable) could only be imitated, but it is impossible. NO-ONE better, certainly in No 3 featured here. Not even the great Benedetti-Michelangeli or Sviatoslav Richter whose recitals I was fortunate enough to attend. Perfection is the word here, but not cold like an XVIII century neoclassical statue, but warm and live. Thank you, Rita.

Indimenticabile Maestro Emil Gilels!

Momentos destacables: 12:30 acorde fortísimo de re menor en el segundo movimiento de la sonata op 2 no 2 14:41 Inicio del tercer movimiento de la sonata op 2 no 2 (en mi opinión, el movimiento que más me gusta. Muy bien estructurado y un tema principal que se presenta con variadas personalidades y un trío hermoso en la menor que empieza en el 16:21) 44:42 Inicio del scherzo de la sonata op 2 no 3 (mi movimiento preferido debido a su constante inestabilidad por el tema principal que a veces se presenta como alegre, otras veces como enojado y otras veces muy desesperado y misterioso)

Gilels never plays down to Beethoven no matter how early the composition. He puts as much careful thought and feeling into the Bonn sonatas as he put into the later early, middle and late masterpieces. He was a scrupulous genius who never disappoints. It is a regrettable and permanent loss that he didn't make it to Op. 111. Like Beethoven he died too young. He was so perceptive in Beethoven that it is impossible to imagine an Op. 120 - yet his gift convinces me he was put on earth to record it and I'm certain he would have.

Beethoven would be thrilled if he were present - and able to hear this marvelous interpretation.

Until I listened to this today, I didn't like sonata no2 and 3 very much. But Gilels is a magician! He turned these tunes into a very charming ones. Thanks a lot, Ria. Although I've not seen you in person, I think you are one of my best friends...because your uploads always give me happiness.

Very good

He makes this sonata sound so simple - mightily difficult when you try to play. The scales with missing noted are devilishly tough, especially to have it "flow like oil". Reminds me of Chopin Etude # 1 : arpeggio with missing notes!
