Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This recording of Chopin's Fantasie-Impromptu op.66 was made in 1928.

I love his cheeky runs with extra notes and he’s one of the only pianists who actually trills instead of just a mordent!!

He plays as someone who truly belongs to the virtuoso, romantic piano tradition would. It's unfortunate that very few pianists today ascribe to this, such as Katsaris, and the rest are very much about this stiffy adherence to exactness and purity.

It has a natural flow and joyfulness (yes, I know it's in the minor, but it's an uplifting piece, isn't it?) one rarely hears from pianists today. Thanks for posting!

uplifting ? I would use words like outrage, despair, but also defiance, confidence and with relent of anger for the A part of this fantaisie. But i think the instrument he is playing is particularly sweet with bell like sound and reminds me of a songbird singing at my window. But Chopin's composition.. God no, not joyful a bit, but beautifully and painfully defiant in its despair.

He is absolute the best interpreter of impromptu... at this rarely fastest speed where notes of more than 1/64 are needed, pieces like this one here, its impossible to find a pianist to play so delightfull and clear and fullfilling... No other pianist has ever played this piece in such a reference level....not even Corcot...

dont let us forget, Liszt dedicated for Chopin and Chopin for Liszt, so Liszt pupils were close to tthe compositions of Chopin too... I think the spoirit of interpretation of Chopin is reflected here..... Its not a Czerny etude.....

@lovesGenet I think you probably now by now, but De Greef and Lamond made plenty of real live recordings (as well as piano rolls). You will find lots on my channel. Many are very fine indeed. De Greef is perhaps harder to understand.

Is it me or the piano tune is changing over the piece it sounds higher by the time he repeats the initial theme, something is weird or it's just a few keys out of tune on the piano ? His trills are amazing.

@tuxdcat: you're so right about the fluid thing, I hate it when pianist stop or slow down because they want to rub it in how eeeemooootional the following bars will be .... cheap! Overcooked, poor Frederic....... or the bloodless near-death interpretations because - you know Chopin was ill and weak - disgusting. So von Sauer gets double brownie points for fluid and lively

gosh, the only difference in appearance between von Sauer and Canada's 1st Prime Minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, is that MacDonald was drunk all the time.
