Emil von Sauer (1862-1942): Liszt - Etude: "Ricordanza"

Emil von Sauer was a pupil of Liszt (1811-1886), who made probably the most successful recordings of any of the Liszt pupils. Sauer was noted for his aristocratic approach to music-making, with lashings of charm, elegance and style backed up by phenomenal technique.
This etude is no.9 (in Ab) from Liszt's set of Transcendental Etudes, and the performance was recorded in around 1941.

I think: he was nearest to his teacher liszt. My own teacher, Ernst Gröschel was a very well known pupil of Emil von Sauer and his touch was like we can hear there but never at todays pianists.

I confess I have never heard a more inventive version of this Etude, and it's just breathtaking - thanks for posting!

You're all right.........this is one of the greatest Liszt piano solos ever recorded. Busoni's remark - "like going through a packet of faded love letters"

Sauer was born in 1862, so he was nearly 80 when this recording was made. He passed away in 1942.

I have a CD of this piece played by XAVER SCHARWENKA on a WELTE ROLL played back on a 1922 Steinway-Welte upright piano. Timing: 9:04. Scharwenka attended Liszt's Weimar masterclasses but was not, it seems, a Liszt pupil, more a musical colleague. The CD is one of a 4 CD set of roll recordings by LISZT DISCIPLES issued and sold by Wensleydale Press 165/137 Victoria Street, Ashfield NSW 2131 Sydney Australia. This piece has an old-fashioned charm and nostalgia.

Of all etudes by Chopin/Liszt this is my favorite. Lyrical, sounds more like a ballade than a mere etude...

@paulostroff99 Sauer is wonderful in this and the other music he recorded of Liszt . His tone is like a magnificent rainbow and his phrasing so varied and intresting. Thank you for sharing and to d60944 for posting. Regards-John

I happily found a copy of the original 78rpm today: German wartime Columbia LWX 353 (12"). Light blue labels with newish appearance but some superficial patina on the playing surfaces. Looks rather clean but I won't play until properly cleaned. So thanks for allowing me to listen already tonight!

Thank you. Now corrected. Must have copied and pasted the raw text from another video and overlooked to update that fragment of text.

This is completely unhurried, and I don't think that's because Sauer was old. I'm reminded of Cherkassky, whose tempi were more " regal" than many , yet who was a superb artist
