I originally recorded these "Behind the Musical" songs as a tool to teach the eventual real actors what to do. I finally decided to share my secrets and release these recordings to you so that we can all go on this journey together, and bring this epic, empowering musical to the stage as a family:).

from The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls, an Original Musical
(Characters: Emilie, Guards, Nurses, Head Nurse)
GUARD 1:
We have instructions.
GUARD 2:
We don’t ask questions.
GUARD 3:
We do our job.
GUARD 4:
We don’t think twice.
ALL GUARDS:
If she messed up enough to be here
She deserves to pay the price.
NURSE 1 & 2:
Coat.
Dress.
Shoes.
Hairpins.
NURSE 1:
She seems quite lucid.
NURSE 2:
She’s cooperative.
NURSE 1:
And rather well-behaved.
HEAD NURSE:
She made a serious attempt.
GUARD 1 & 2:
Books.
Pens.
NURSE:
She was depressed.
GUARD 1, 2, & 3:
Phone.
HEAD NURSE:
She was depraved.
ALL GUARDS:
Notebook.
EMILIE:
You mean I can’t keep my own clothes?
Just one book-I’ll need something to read!
Why am I being treated like everyone else
When my medication is all that I need?
This is crazy! I didn’t hurt anyone else but myself,
Which I firmly believe should be my right to do,
But, see, now that I’ve said that you’ll keep me here,
I suspect, several more hours than seventy-two.
NURSE 1 & 2:
She’s one more patient.
GUARD 1 & 2:
Coat.
Dress.
GUARD 3 & 4:
One pathetic, worthless girl not worth the fuss.
NURSE 1 & 2:
Shoes.
Hairpins.
HEAD NURSE:
She wastes our time,
Thinks she’s unique.
GUARDS 1 & 2:
Books.
Pens.
ALL GUARDS:
She’s fun to look at-that’s a plus.
EMILIE:
This can’t possibly be
What my shrink meant for me.
Can’t I call him and tell him
There’s been some mistake?
Is a guard with a gun,
Making sure I don’t run,
Really touching my ass?
God, I’m starting to shake!
ALL GUARDS:
If she is hiding
Something dangerous
We will soon
Become aware.
What has she done?
We have no clue,
And if we’re honest,
We don’t care.
NURSE 1 & 2:
Coat.
Dress.
Shoes.
Hairpins.
Books.
Pens.
Phone.
Notebook.
EMILIE:
What if I am as crazy as they seem to think?
What if I can’t be trusted with even a pen?
What if my only hope is surrender
Of body and mind to the care of these men?
I will not cry.
I’ll find somehow
To take what I can take from this experiment,
So this I fucking vow:
I will not fight!
I will allow!
I am committed!
Take me now!
