The whole “Emily is portrayed as incredibly competent but is actually just lucky” could be a good show premise in the hands of good writers. Exploring the imposter syndrome of someone who just lucks into everything and everyone thinks they’re super competent, then the catastrophic downfall when their luck fails and they can no longer live up to others high expectations

Camille’s character is like a tantrum from the writers going “No! They are supposed to root for Emily! Not Camille! We have to make people hate her so they would love Emily!”

What frustrates me is the completely blatant character assassination of Camille. Emily sucks SO bad that people were rooting for Camille instead of her in season 1. So, starting from season 2, they try to write Camille to be the worst thing ever, just so Emily look good in comparison. But no, Emily is still trash. She just took Camille down to her level. Emily and Gabriel deserve each other (derogatory).

As a french person I find absolutely ridiculous that the show tries to make it look like we think of McDonald's as a "luxury" or a "petit plaisir" A lot of us only eat it because it's cheap, most of the people I know are disgusted at the idea of eating there and if we want a treat like that we'll just go to a better fastfood.

"Paris is a big city. You don't just run into people." And yet, this happens constantly to Emily in the show. 😂

I love how they embody Emily's indecisiveness in her wardrobe by making her incapable of picking a theme for any of her outfits. "Instead of picking two or three colors to coordinate, why don't I have every color at the same time?" "Instead of picking one or two patterns consistent across my whole outfit, what if every individual piece has a completely different pattern?" God, looking at her outfits just makes me mad.

I just laughed at "funemployment" routine, considering she lives in insanely expensive apartment in the middle of Paris, paid by american company, that decided to close the office in Paris. I was totally prepared to see her struggling to find a new apartment to rent (without having a visa and knowing the language and having a job), but no, it wasn't even a thing.

With Camille cheating, it's like Netflix jumps from negative stereotypes from one group to the next like a checklist.

I just watched a video they did for the s3 press tour where the cast played "Who's most likely to" and when the question was "Who's most like their character" everyone said Lily and I was like 💀 That's NOT a compliment. And then I couldn't unsee the similarities tbh 😭

I actually really started to like Alfie this season, he's clearly the better choice between him and Gabriel. On the other hand, maybe he deserves to be with someone less dramatic than Emily!

As someone who‘s recently been unexpectedly unemployed, I can only assume that Emily‘s just supposed to be straight up rich. Like, „working is just my fun little hobby because I got nothing else to do with my boring life“ rich. Cause truth be told, I was in the very comfortable and privileged situation to have a bunch of savings in addition to unemployment money, plus parental safety-net. So I was more than able to sustain my lifestyle without actually having to worry for a good chunk of time. AND STILL I was SO WORRIED CONSTANTLY! I felt so guilty for every second that I didn‘t invest into getting a new job. Even when I managed to be chill about it, there was always this constant worry and guilt in the back of my mind. I don‘t even want to imagine what it must be like for people who actually really do have to worry about sustaining themselves… So yeah, either Emily‘s character was just supposed to be „ignoring her problems“ as a character flaw/ setup for an arc (which it didn‘t seem like…) or she‘s just on another plane of financial existence altogether (u know, like rich people). Those are the only two reasonable in universe explanations. Otherwise I‘m going to have to assume that these show runners are full of shit.

The reality of living in a foreign city unemployed is terrifying. I've lived in barcelona a few years and have gone through several job changes, the periods in between were spent caffeinated and hunched over my laptop searching for work because i was too stressed to do anything else (don't even get me started on visas) and barcelona is MUCH cheaper than paris. but the reality of having so little money you're living off noodles and bananas isn't very romantic

Even Queen Narcissist Carrie Bradshaw tried to learn French and struggled with the language difference. Carrie went through more struggles in 2 episodes than Emily did in THREE seasons.

I've just realized that all female main characters are in a love triangle: Emily : Alfie and Gabriel Mindy: Benoit and Nicholas Camille: Gabriel and greek artist Sylvie: ex-husband and Dutch guy

The fact that the only way they can make emily look better is by completely assasinating a character's personality in order to bring them down to emily's level is... interesting. They'll do anything for her to come out of a situation unharmed with no consequences or work to do whatsoever

There was a quick line, a throwaway line, in the scene where Emily is talking with the very important journalist lady where after realizing she is Australian the journalist implies that French people need an outside perspective on who the most influential people are. I don't know about you, but that kind of reeks of the Season 1 attitude that the French don't really know what they're doing, they need someone who speaks English to show them the right way to do things and I thought that was hilarious

I feel like Emily is supposed to be a self insert for the viewers. Her lack of depth could be because the writers want the audience to project themselves onto her and live vicariously through her. It gives me the vibes of a reader fanfic that's been executed poorly; all the characters seem to be in love with Emily for some reason, and there are never negative consequences for any of her actions. "My biggest flaw is that I love too much and want to make everyone happy" is such Mary Sue trope

Kinda laughable that the initial premise of the show was following this beautiful, white and american young woman navigate her way through romance, work and fashion in Paris, but the most interesting, compelling and best played character is a middle age french woman who runs a marketing firm ✨

Here’s an idea they could’ve used to expand Emily’s character in the show: Make her come from a toxic entitled rich family. Think about it. Maybe Emily’s parents influenced her into being selfish and ignorant to everyone by spoiling her, but now that she’s in a foreign country and out of her element with a new job, her ideals and views on the world are challenged. This way the show could add some depth to her character and maybe even allow people to sympathize with her. Of course it wouldn’t excuse her horrible behavior, but it would make her more understandable to the audience and allow her to grow out of that toxic mentality. Maybe put her in therapy while you’re at it. (Or just throw Emily on a deserted island and rename the show to Sylvie in Paris, that would work too.)

Your analyses over the past few videos on this have convinced me that Emily in Paris is literally a transcription of someone's Sims playtime given story, but using cheat codes cause they're bored with things progressing normally. I will not be convinced otherwise lol.

I've only started watching the video, but I just had to say: I super respect your decision not to ask Lily for a selfie when she was clearly just enjoying a quiet day with her husband! This kind of thoughtfulness coming from a content creator sure is refreshing

Yeah, I don't think they necessarily wanted to villianize Camille but rather the idea of her. She is the embodiment of the chic French woman we read about and fawn over. The ideal, progressive, liberated woman that recieves after her a long line of both male and female admirers without trying too hard. It's a stereotype but a romantisized one whereas Emily is the obnoxious American. We basically see the assasination of Camille, which is the assasination of the idea of chic French woman in order to highlight Emily's American girl next door greatness. Camille's effortless fashion from season one turns awkward and ill-fitting in yhe following seasons. Her fluid view of sexuality becomes so fluid that she doesn't bat an eye when she is presented with a chance to cheat on her great lover. She becomes the femme fatale so drastically from a sweet, friendly girl. While the writers are more than willing to enforce stereotypes, they especially want to demean the stereotype of French women in order to make them less desirable and excuse me, more loose, whorish, disloyal than their American counterparts. All this to show that America is superior in their supply of ideas and women. This also happens with other French women portrayed in the show. Sylvie, who openly flaunts her open relationship and revels in being a mistress. Camille's mother who is more concerned about her son being a good lover rather than the fact that he as a minor had sex with an older woman. And a wife who finds Emily to be more mistress material for her husband and approves of it.

If this show is fan fiction quality, I can't imagine what real Emily in Paris fan fiction is like. She's even more perfect?

I think that Sylvie is not only fleshed out but Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is also a way much better actress than Lily Collins is and that is just a fact, which also makes her a better main character! love your videos as usual

It would have been SUCH a good character arc to have her trying to win back her boyfriend throughout the season with romantic gestures and being a better person/partner. Have them still be friends and show up for each other during their times of need and whatnot, and that struggle of still loving him and being in his life etc. But they decided to just... make it happen the next episode...

I literally screamed when you said that you saw Lily Collins in Paris. Glad that you respected her and didn't approach, but god it would have been SO legendary if you got a selfie with her--

What's worse about the whole Camille 180: it's to be inferred that she saw the way that Gabriel and Emily hugged on the balcony during the party, and she felt a certain way about it. But Gabriel literally walks up to Camille and her parents RIGHT AFTER THIS and EXPLAINS that his restaurant was getting a Michelin Star. They even celebrate this news with emphatic glee and they all bear hug...so conflict, immediate explanation and suspension of conflict, then marriage ceremony right after. ...and yet we're supposed to believe that Camille omitted this scene and decided to burn it all to the ground because she was, ultimately, competitive and jealous?? I know this is a tall order for this show, but I would've liked to see variations of love be explored here. Considering that Paris IS the city of love, it would be cool to see how love manifests for the characters. We definitely see versions of it, but it would be interesting to see how Emily moves away from Gabriel, a love that may have felt right but was ill-timed, and instead grows to understand what kind of love she needs. Is it a love found with another romantic partner? A tight-knit community? Her vocation? Or could it be the city of Paris itself? I'm convinced that when they brought up Sartre to describe Emily's indecision, they were also speaking about the writers' indecision about Emily's identity. Who is she away from being connected to drama and serendipity? What truly connects her to Paris so much that she would essentially abandon her life in the States to stay there? I want to believe that this show CAN provide answers to these questions that don't simply come down to, "the power of love," or that women are always pitted against each other for a man's attention. But maybe that's a pipe-dream.

Isn't inability to choose between two options a weird traits to write for a character who's journey started with her choosing to uproot her life and move to Paris? Making impulsive often very bad choices and stubbornly sticking by them would fit her much better...

I am so freaking upset about Camille’s character assassination! I am convinced that the writers did that just because Emily was getting so much hate, something they didn’t expect, and wanted to shift it to someone else. I really think Camille is like this now to make Emily look better or more likable. There is no other reason for this. Camille had every right to be mad at Emily and Gabrielle in the beginning but now they are trying to turn her into the villain. Edit: Also, Alphie deserves better than Emily. Emily and Gabrielle are both awful and if they end up together, they can just be the trash couple.

A main character people love isn't someone who isn't normally mixed, but one who is unique and has ways to be iconic. Sylvie would be a great main character over Emily.

I like Emily in Paris because it reminds me a lot how I used to play with my Barbies back in my childhood. Everything fitting conveniently perfect even when something seems to go wrong. It's a perfect series to watch when you don't want to think, or don't want hard conflicts. Just chill and give a pause to your brain. It's cute.

Im statring to think that Emily's lack of backstory or character growth is for people that want to self insert in this idea of Paris, but her personality makes her just so hard to do so.

People who don't want to disappoint others around them is a problem a lot of people have to deal with BUT what Emily is doing is not that. Dating two people at once WILL hurt and disappoint people. People who struggle with pleasing everyone around them try their best to avoid being in a situation that will guaranty hurt people. Emily is doing that because she's selfish and she refuses to see herself as a "bad" person, so she excuses her behavior by claiming she doesn't want to disappoint people.

I feel like you could turn it around with a twist that the reason her life is like this is because she made a pact with Satan. In season 4, the devil returns to collect: Emily in Hell.

Without a visa? I can't wait for season 4 - Emily in a foreigner detention center. Because yes, those exist in France pending your deportation. You're spot on about the advertising. I had spotted that in the first season. The designer clothes, the Paris venues, and I even saw the McDonald's ad here in Paris and I figured they were the sponsor for this season. The other seasons I think it was more of an ad for Instagram as a whole. The number of times Instagram is mentioned in season 1, as well as the brands you mentioned. It's really the brands that carry the plot and the writers just work around it.

Also I want to add, the show has the foundations to actually become really good. They could utilise how Gabrielle is a shell of a person and they could highlight how a lot of his traits are actually symptematic of depression and they could show how despite how amazing he is doing at his job he is miserable and doesn't understand why etc. They have Camille who is from a privileged background and they could use the whole same-sex story line to highlight generational issues with the LGBT community. They could use Sylvie as the ultimate feminist icon where she fumbles a bit but ends up with her own amazing business, an amazing marriage etc while also bringing up the sexual assault and how she got through it. They could focus on Julien having his ideas stolen by Emily constantly and highlight how historically people of colour have been overlooked and had ideas taken etc. The foundations are there for this to actually be really hard hitting, even if they just picked one or two things to really zone in on!

what change i did enjoy was how when it's just the french characters in a scene, they communicate in french and even correspond online in text! i appreciated that the producers/writers took the feedback of there not being enough french when the show is set in a french city with french characters consisting more than half of the cast

As a French person, I painfully watched half of the first season. But when I saw in the news that season 3 was released, I was only waiting for that channel review.

Am I the only person that thinks Cami lied to Gabriel about being pregnant just to lock him down? I think that’s the next level villainization of her in Season 4. 90% sure that’s what the convo with her mom at the wedding is supposed to imply.

Fun fact. When I watched the third season, I noticed that it ended too soon. I checked and realized that Netflix started showing me the season from episode 4 (no idea why). That is to say, the episodes are so unimportant that you can miss almost half of the season, and you lose nothing 😅

28:40 I didn't watch the full scene, but this small part really hits. I really appreciate the small but strong detail that he refers to her using the informal "you" as a way to bring them closer together in a familiar way as he smiles to her, but she retorts with the formal "you" when she reminds him of the SA to put well-needed emotional distance between them. I'm glad they let someone who actually understands French subtleties handle the French dialogue.

That is why the character works at PR agency: so they can keep having conversations about brands and pretend it's dialogue.

One thing that I always wondered about Emily was "what is her situation with her family?". I might be forgetting something from the earlier seasons, but I think she rarely speaks about them. Why don't we ever see her talking to her parents or something? Why nobody visits her in Paris? It's kinda weird. But, overall, season 3 is definitely the best season so far!

I've never watched this show, Pretty Little Liars or Riverdale, but I get so much fun from you reviewing them, that I'm starting to fear I'm a sadist.

Your observation about the advertising sounds spot on - and the controversy will really work to get people in when the storyline is far too flimsy to do it. Though your pointing out the total absence of a past for Emily raises some entertaining ideas. Like, maybe she's actually a Hogwarts graduate who was an utter star at brewing Felix Felicitas (or whatever it was called) the Luck potion. And she's just roleplaying the Muggle dream life before returning to the magical world to do some proper work. :D

The "Emily sucks at her job" thing it's really pretty telling of what they think the demographic targeted is like: people that don't really work if not the bare minimum and rely on luck to be in the position they are in. Which, I guess, isn't even that strange considering how a lot of business people don't know shit to begin with, they mostly happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right connections.

My favourite part about the show is the complete lack of follow-through. There are sooooo many moments where Emily gets told off, or they hint at something like sex on the Ferris wheel, but then it never leads anywhere! When Emily gets told off at the McLaren thing for suggesting a brain-dead idea it never amounts to anything. And when she makes fuck on the Ferris wheel you assume it might lead to a funny moment (maybe they get caught and it turns out the whole thing was a joke at her expense? Idk?) but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS. I WATCHED THIS OVER CHRISTMAS WITH MY MOM AND SHE LOVES IT AND I DON'T KNOW WHY IS THIS WHAT WINE DOES TO A MFER AAAAA

Emily in Paris is just self-indulgence to the max. I totally forgot that we have next to nothing on Emily herself, but Emily exists solely for her self-insert capabilities. I'll prove it (warning, this is long): She has no background so you can pretend you're her. You're backstory is _her_ backstory - she has nothing to contradict you with besides her name and looks. That's easy enough to ignore - after all, the coolest part of Emily is her wardrobe. Who doesn't want to wear couture? She's "good" at her job and faces no real struggles with the answers running to serve her before she even notices the question for the fantasy that you'll be good at you're job and succeed "despite" (without) any struggles . You just can't think of good problems or solutions that'd really work because it requires knowledge you don't have and the uncomfortable feeling of failing and the hard work of actually trying isn't as cool-looking. This is supposed to be a feel-good story - conflict and anything besides success has no real place here. It's also why they don't understand the criticisms - she's not meant to have any substantial "flaws" or _ever_ be the bad guy, and they think their intent and goals erase the reality of what they created. Every man wants to bang her and she's cool with banging them all regardless of their actual relationship statuses outside of her because this is a sexy romance and she's meant to explore all her options to find "true love" which makes it all okay. A love triangle is _spicy~_ - having someone cheat _for_ you is supposed to show how utterly desirable you are. It's also why the men get weirdly possessive - it's "sexy" that they "can't help" but act "unreasonable," as they "can't bear" another man loving you like he does, and so on. Just another angle of the old "bad boy boyfriend" phenomenon and being considered catnip for men - it's supposed to make you feel sexy. She's still friends with the girl she's helping treat because she needs female friends to bounce off of that'll help prove how beautiful, charismatic, and _"kind"_ she is for being friends with her "love-rival" - making Cami(?) the unreasonable one to still serve as an obstacle for _Emily's_ romance. There is usually a bitchy love-rival who keeps trying to get with the love-interest, and the self-insert is always chosen because that's the point. The twist is that that person was supposed to be a "good person" and friend this time - they ruined Camille likely because they got tired of the lack of "good" drama a "villain" character could bring. I'm honestly surprised there weren't other minor characters like that. _Camille_ is in the "wrong" for getting with Emily's love-interest - doesn't matter that he was her boyfriend first, since Emily likes him, she shouldn't stand in her way. It's why they changed her motivation for getting back with him - it serves Emily. Camille's feelings were never meant to be taken seriously in a way that doesn't help Emily - it's not "true love" because it's not Emily's love. They don't hold value - she's just an obstacle. It's why this position is typically for an antagonist/"villain" character - you're not meant to feel sympathetic to the Other Woman, here. Cheating is much easier to swallow in media if you're trapped with an "evil" lover - it's why Emily nor Gabriel faced any real consequences for banging when he was with Camille - Camille is an obstacle for their love, the writers just forgot that they wrote Camille in a way that made us like her, so her being cheated on isn't something that we were actually okay with. So they had to change Camille instead. The love triangle situation was too "interesting" to let go of try to do right by her. It's also why Gabriel is so bland. He's a plot device to serve Emily's narrative of being a good person and a good girlfriend for her to find true love. He only needs to want her, and show her that on occasion, and that's it. He doesn't need to be a responsible adult and make decisions to do right by Camille _and_ Emily by maybe not cheating on them because he's just so caught up in being in "love" that he has to choose between the "right" thing to do in being with Camille to doing what his "heart" wants in being with Emily. Him being fraught and in love and _pining serves to make him interesting, despite him being a rather terrible boyfriend and friend in general. Camille's and Gabriel's characters are all to serve Emily and validate her desirability in being the "best." All the cheating, Alfie, and the pregnancy scandal were just "interesting" obstacles to make you "invested" in their love. Now I'm not saying that a fun, self-indulgent self-insert show doesn't deserve to exist - it does. It's just as was pointed out, it's lack of self-awareness of what makes it so unlikable makes the show more patronising than it needs to be. Emily growing to be a better friend to the people around her should not be such a scary concept, either. Emily in Paris takes itself too seriously, and it makes it's show even more obnoxious. This being greenlit in the face of other good story-telling is also a slap in the face. It should be a drop in the bucket, but it wants to be the center of attention, and that's gonna rub people wrong and for good reason. Let it be a guilty pleasure _without_ all that other stuff. People would have more fun with this show and leave it alone if it did. I do gotta say, the show sticking around as an ad cow makes so much sense. I knew the fashion was half the point (completely contradicts Emily's supposed status being able to afford such pricy things from the jump), but makes sense. This show is just easy money.

I love slice-of-life stuff so I actually do enjoy this show despite no-one really growing or changing & didn't find Emily nearly as obnoxious in this season as she was in 1 and 2 like I think she's acclimating a little bit. I love that. I feel like a lot more people (characters and real people) need to understand that as well. Although maybe Lily was referring to Emily unapologetically wearing bizarre outfits? That's usually the kind of shallow fluff "unapologetically yourself" seems to mean on the soc medes. Honestly I'm glad Julien finally decided enough was enough but I wish they'd gone further with that this season. Instead we get a cliffhanger at the end of the series -_- In the first episode I think they had everyone in the room speaking French and I thought, "Wow that's an improvement," but then they... dropped that... for some reason.... Sylvie is a great character and I'm glad they gave her more screentime this season. (Fun fact: I'm learning High Valyrian on Duolingo and "Sylvie" is the word for "Wise".) I love the Mindy Musical Numbers! I'd actually love a Mindy spinoff that's just a Crazy Ex-Girlfriend style musical. I feel like in a meta sense, Gigi hating Camille but LOVING Emily is the writers going "wink wink nudge nudge, Emily and Gabriel are better than Camille and Gabriel!" Just realised we even know more about MINDY than we do about Emily. Also I want to know how the hell Emily could afford to be "fun-employed". How much does she earn and how much of that paycheck goes to her insane wardrobe? Did she put anything in savings? Was she living off that? What was she going to do when her money ran out? Yes, it improved to mediocre! Huzzah!

The fact the turned Camille into an asshole this season just drives me crazy, the treatment of her character was so poor, I feel so bad for the actress. Btw I said this on your instagram but congrats on the engagement 💜

I truly wouldn't mind some of Emily's wins if it came from her taking initiative. Like maybe instead of getting a random phone call from her ex, she finds out about his new job from LinkedIn and sees a post about the McDonald's thing there and calls HIM. That way, when she already had the solution for Sylvie's problem, it was because of her own prior doing, instead of things randomly falling into her lap.

I cringed so hard when I read that Netflix cancelled 1899 after season 1 but they keep going deeper and deeper with Emily In Paris, figure. Now, if you think about it, if season 1 is 0/10, season is 1/10 and season 3 is a 2 /10, may be they aim to get a 5 by season 9 ? Emily being a good character would make a nice plot twist.
