A lesser interviewer would have shirked the important questions or did what media people usually do when sitting in front of a member of the royal family - tugged their forelocks and behaved obsequiously. Maitlis played her part superbly and deserves a huge amount of credit for a job well done.
Translation: I don't want to get in trouble and agree to taking down a member of the royal family Could see her thought process off "how do I word this"
@@Hazed64 she did a fantastic job of giving him enough rope. He did the rest by talking. She was careful to make sure she acknowledged her work questions research) i wouldn't be shocked if she was up for an award of the interview.
The interview was impeccable. The end where Emily asks the prince, if he has any final words? Perhaps a morsel of humility, empathy and consideration for the victims, he says “No, I don’t think so” smugly. It was horrific.
And did Prince Andrew really think the public and the media were going to believe him? Deluded man who hasn't been told "No" often enough. Spoilt, entitled, pompous and mendacious. Miss Maitlis gave him the rope and he hanged himself.
@@Ktc99999-b She went for the money because she couldn't provide the 'evidence' she claimed to have. It will be interesting to see what she does when the money has been spent. Allegedly she has a list of other men, including the likes of Bill Clinton. And what has happened about the allegtions that Virginia herself was involved in procuring girls for Epstein?
The whole interview was VERY professionally constructed & implemented. Viewers have freedom to accept what they believe. For me, he was exposed & truly discredited beyond doubt.
Very, very easy to recognise he was lying through the whole interview if you have any experience in interviewing guilty people. He clearly had none, so blindly dug his own grave. Bravo Emily for having the guts to do it.
Emily is one of the few journalists/reporters who is not afraid to ask the correct questions, even if it could cost her her career. I have nothing, but admiration for her, it’s a pity other so called journalists couldn’t be more like her!
Lol, get back in the knife nox, Miss Sharp. Maitless at the time she filmed this had a career spanning over 30 years. She’s had a heavyweight career in several countries, made many odocumentaries, covered hard news, was an editor of the Spectator, and spent well over a decade on the most heavyweight political show the BBC ever had, eventually becoming its lead anchor.
Total admiration for her, her calm consistent tone and the timing of her precise questions was perfect, the way the revelations kept unfolding was testament to her impeccable interview talent
Remarkable interview. For me it exposed Andrews complete sense of entitlement to the point he believed he could say anything no matter how implausible to explain away his behaviour and the general public would give him the benefit of the doubt.
Much like Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings et al during the Covid nightmare. Narcissists who truly believe they are way above the laws and rules that govern everyone else in this country.
@@ajs41 officially, that's true. He settled out of court before the trial so we'll never know. Then again though why settle to the tune of millions if you are innocent? Besides, I wasn't talking about that, I was talking about the sense I got of him from this interview as a human being and my conclusion was he's not very impressive, born into enormous privilege he had every possible advantage and still managed to blow it... entitled and clearly not very bright is quite a combination. By all accounts even his old pal Epstein exploited this and privately told people that Andrew was an idiot, but - to him - a useful one.
On the rare occasion when journalists actually _do_ expose the truth yes, great respect, because they know they're going to get shut down & possibly lose their jobs & yes, as a democracy we absolutely _do_ need to hear the truth in matters which will affect our voting. However, that's not what happened during & after that interview is it? What happened was a very experienced interviewer asked a stream of carefully-phrased questions designed to entrap the idiot being interviewed & upon & around that a massive fantasy was built & sold (at 65p or more per daily copy) to the voracious public as fact when it blatantly bore no relationship with the tiny shreds of actual evidence presented.
Sa rah Ferguson had asked Beatrice to persuade daddy to the invitation to appear on the BBC , so that they all could just carry on with their lives as before 😜 It backfired 😜.
Yes. She's far from my favourite TV presenter/interviewer, but she did very well indeed with this interview. A very professional performance by Emily Maitlis.
They weren't his hands, he's a man of honour and he can't sweat because he is a war hero. Must have been the most insane interviewed person I've ever heard
"I can't sweat," was my favourite part of the interview, all of which would have been really funny had it not been for the nature of the things he had been accused of. A very strange man.
Imagine being a Mail reader and getting red-faced furious, steaming from the ears over Meghan Markle, while Prince Andrew exists. It's a strange world.
Final comment from James is unfair. Emily Maitlis didn’t bring down a member of the royal family; Andrew did that himself. She did a fantastic and difficult interview through which Andrew was exposed. We shouldn’t burden her with any feelings of responsibility for the fallout. You can see the seriousness with which she considered the subject throughout this clip which contrasted with James’ boyish and inappropriate excitement.
"it's an amazing thing to have done, brought down a member of the royal family" "I think I just asked the questions" Real journalism described in one answer
@@swchri1264 yeah, definitely. I loved her long pause, compared to how fluid the conversation had been, like recalibrating and trying to get out of the loaded-ness of it lol very skillful
I was very impressed with the interview - for me it was all the evidence needed that Emily (and the whole team) were a huge asset to the BBC. It's a shame they were not more confident supporting her when the UK Gov complained.
Emily Maitlis… you’re an absolute legend in my book! She is a cool journalist, always looks in control of the interview and has a brilliant way of disarming most interviewees! Very intelligent lady.
@@hb1338 She's a trained journalist with a degree from (ironically) Queen's College Cambridge. She doesn't need anyone to write her script or do her work for her. Why are you so bitter towards her? Jealousy? Love for Andrew?
And now she's left the BBC, maybe she'll have more opportunities to show off her journalistic prowess. It's just unfortunate that she chose to remain with them so long and assist them in their task of lying to the British people and covering up for the government. I don't understand how any decent, honest journalist can continue to work for the corporation in its current state.
she is journalism in its purist form and all that it stands for. truth no matter the circumstances/consequences to give you the facts to make your own informed decision. she could have easily ruined her career or had it ruined by others for the nature of that interview considering his status and all that would stand by the royals but she crafted it perfectly making it impossible to go any other way. a true masterclass of journalism/interview skills that will be studied and taught for years to come.
@@hb1338 yeah fair and true point. I'm sure she'll have a say in which direction to take it in built around her style of interviewing but a great interview it was.
Yes. I have some respect for the Queen although I would like to think if I was born in the same position, I would say enough of this nonsense. She did however bring up at least two dysfunctional sons. Andrew, self explanatory, Charles cash in a suitcase from Saudi Arabia and allowing his employees to be made redundant in the week the country stopped ; also honours for a donor to one of his charities. I accept he was probably brought up not able to realise how corrupt that all was but that’s why it should all be done away with.
For what? Nothing was proven? Innocent until proven guilty? Would you like to be accused and charged with something that hasn't been proven in a court of law.
@@cmorecult yes, but guilty of what? paying a 17 year old girl for .. ahem .. services? at best that is his crime, from the evidence we have. i wouldn't be surprised if there's more dirt under the rug but having known this girl doesn't seem like such a heinous offense
This is exactly right. When you’ve grown up and have noting but yes people around, treating you like your ish don’t stink, this is the consequence. It was appalling watching that interview.
Although Andrew wasn't allowed to wear his military uniform at the Queen's funeral, it was nice to see him wearing his military medals along with “JIM FIXED IT FOR ME”
As always, Emily conducted herself in a professional manner, asked her questions, stuck to the facts and stayed cool in the face of the enormity of what was unfolding before her very eyes. She gave a masterclass of unbiased interviewing and the result spoke for itself.
Great clip. Now I want to listen to the whole podcast. I saw that it had downloaded to my phone earlier today but now it will be top of the list to listen to.
Emily Maites's interview of Mr. Andrew was masterful. Emily Maitlis was well prepared and non-judgemental. She appeared to be calm and composed throughout the interview and was exceedingly patient in spite of his obvious evasiveness, feigned selective amnesia, framing all from his one-sided, biased perspective, and his repugnant, self-incriminating responses.
2:03 James O'Brien: "It's an astonishing thing, isn't it, to have brought down a member of the royal family?" Prince Andrew was at the memorial - he wasn't brought down, he's a free man.
I was astonished to see him at any of the recent events, and yet more people seemed to be complaining that Harry & Meghan were there. Apparently the UK loves child abusers more than mixed-race couples. Doesn't it make you proud? 🤢
@@freakishuproar1168 Nothing of the sort. A civil settlement was reached that meant he didn't have to serve prison time. The legal system allows money (fines/damages) in lieu of prison as punishment and it saves the taxpayers money. Even if imprisoned, he would have been allowed out to attend his mother's funeral, I surmise. That was the point I was making to the OP. You may be envious that he is not living in poverty, but I am not. But then, that's me.
Emily's interview was a Masterclass in not only how to conduct an interview, but knowing the right questions to ask and to be insightful enough to think on your feet with direct follow-up questions. Brilliant!!
We already know that. The striking thing about the Jeffrey Epstein child prostitution ring is that although several very powerful men have been implicated, ONLY foreigners have been prosecuted in the US. Rich men almost never go to jail for such offences anywhere.
It wasn't until Prince Andrew was 15 that he found out that people put stamps on letters because it was about paying for postage rather than because they liked his mother. True story. A prince asked a holy man how he could achieve enlightenment. The holy man asked him if he ever forgot that he was a prince. The prince replied no. The holy man said "Then until you forget, you will never achieve enlightenment".
It was the one time in his life where he had to stand on his own and face questions instead of fawning and grovelling lackies obeying his every word, an excellent interview, just handed him the rope and allowed him to do the rest
Maybe because then if he ended up in court, his legal team would argue his trial had been prejudiced by “trial by tv” and he couldn’t get a fair hearing
I think there is another book by one of Trump's team who mentions a few things about this case. The FBI were sandbagged took them weeks before they were given the name of Andrew's lawyers. Lots more stalling and then there was the young boy killed on his motorbike by the wife of a US diplomat. According to the book as the UK police obviously wanted her to comback to answer questions . The fix went in you don't get Andrew and we drop the case against the US woman. Now I now that's from a Trump flunky but still it has a horrible stench that you could believe could happen.
He wanted it. His Personal Secretary resigned after advising him against it and being ignored. Andrew thought he could answer a few prearranged questions, put his side of the story to the public and be exonerated. He isn't wily enough to give the non answers of politicians.
This episode was fascinating in many ways, not least of all the slightly more awkward moments between the two. Very enjoyable to watch people being fairly genuine in these times.
Genuine are you kidding me ? This is a mutual admiration interview " Oh I knew what I had got " Pity they were not so keen on exposing the Rotherham grooming gangs .
She DID NOT bring anyone down! Prince Andrew surrounds himself with yes people! His ego, arrogance, sense of superiority, underestimating everyone around you, Let him down!
I watched their interview at least half a dozen times & i just heard it now (i watched it again) I cannot believe that he said what he said & neither she or anyone picked up on it! He said when she asked about when he was in J.E townhouse & HE replied “no, i was in Chicago, because the next day SHE (Virginia) and they all went to the island.” So he DOES know her!!! How the interviewer didn’t register this answer is wild! HOW did we all not notice?! She needs to speak up about this because this is BIG!! This is HUGE!!
You can bet your life, if the FBI said they would like to talk to me and i refused, they would be battering down my door at 4 in the morning and dragging me out..!! Prince Andrew refuses and nothing happens, its sickening
Listening to these two talk, you'd swear blind he'd been sent down for 20 years or something. He's still living the life of riley at the taxpayers expense last I heard.
The arrogance of the man was his downfall ,he could always get a job in California helping them with there on going drought problems ,as he's an expert in water 💦 retention 😳
Emily Maitlis’s interview is a world record “try not to laugh” video, or “try not to puke”, or “try not to cringe”. How the fk did she do poker face for that long?
Lady C as a monarch defender, has been vehemently and aggressively defending Andrew and truly demonizing the victim who won the settlement. It’s most unsavory!
The BBC gets a kicking daily in the gutter press and online. It's worth remembering that it is a world class broadcaster with high standards and excellent staff.
I absolutely believe that Emily Maitlis was hounded out of the BBC because of that interview with Andrew Windsor. Still I ll bet she say it was worth it. Her David Frost moment!
I think she was hounded out because of her comments about Dominic Cummings and the government, don’t think the Sweaty prince had anything to do with it.
That is the responsibility of the media - to ask the questions. And keep asking them until honesty prevails. All too often, the media stop at the point that they think they have the answers that the public most wants to hear... Thankfully, sometimes things fail to add up enough and the momentum fails to fizzle out, so further questions need to be asked until reality is exposed. Most of the time though, royalty just needs to keep repeating the lies because that's perceived to be the populist view.
Yep, and all the public want to hear is "you are right, he's guilty". Everybody who watched the interview under the assumption of guilt, should do themselves the favour of rewatching under the assumption of innocence. It's an interesting experience. But they won't.
how do we watch all of this interview? I can find the full audio on James OB channel but no video unless I'm missing the point somewhere... many thanks 🙂
She did her homework, concisely built the interview with the way she posed her questions and pretty much led him into incriminating himself. Pure mastership of interview on her part. He surprised me with how oblivious he was to his own responses.
