The best thing about all of this is that Sir Elton John approached him first, and publicly defended Em against people calling him a homophobic. Their friendship is freaking wholesome.
20 years later it's still one of the best colabs ever done... amazing .... I just wish we had 4k back then... they crushed it and crushed the media doing this...amazing
Elton's great for crossover stuff. He also played on a version of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" with Miley Cyrus, Yo-Yo Ma and members of Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As long as you're good at what you do he seems to be game to collaborate.
Alot of people forget why this was such a big deal, em was getting killed and portrayed as homophobic because of some of his lyrics and no one was expecting elton john to sing the chorus and this was a masterpiece with these two legends
@@Eli-hd1yothe 90s were low key magical. Everyone got along. No one gave a shit. No one took offense. People spoke their mind and listened to ideas they didn’t agree with.
*Fun Fact: Elton John is Marshall's (Eminem) sponsor. Anytime Eminem is having a bad day & wants to do drugs, he calls Elton & Elton talks him down so he doesn't relapse.*
@@peppemastria4483 Seriously. People tried to "cancel" Eminem well before cancel culture existed, claiming he was a homophobe because gasp, a dude from the streets had some homophobic sounding lyrics. He shut down the haters by doing this collab with Elton John, and they became lifelong friends. Elton John is one of his closest buds and ensures he always has a pal who understand drug abuse, that he can go to when he is considering relapsing. As far as I am concerned they are both legends as far as gay people are concerned, Elton John being gay himself, and Eminem being straight, but coming from a culture where being gay is kept low key, but coming out in great support of gay people and being great friends with one of the most flaming queens ever to show his support. I love and respect them both.
I got respect for both Elton John and Eminem. Both so different musical background yet have so much in common. And both of there music and life story had been a major impact on my life. Both of them are the G.O.A.T. of life
I remember when this aired. I was watching it live and couldn't believe two completely opposite artists complimented each other so well. A testament to the amazing talent both these artists have. They remain friends after 20 years
That was aimed at the media at the time. It’s Eminem’s signature “salute”, but in that moment it was a nod at the press, who suggested he was homophobic.
I actually remember watching this live and when Elton John came on everyone just went 😳😳😳 the 😅😅😅 because it was just such a big fuck you to the media at the time
@@jackburns417 The media said Eminem was homophobic because of some lyrics and quotes I think. Elton said that's nonsense and did Stan together with him. They are still friends.
I absolutely love Elton's vocals and version of this song. He sings with so much passion and he sings the song like its his own, as if he wrote it. Both of these men are absolute legends, they will both forever be remembered.
please dont call me hater, i like elton john. but some songs, and tones dont fit for every singer. imo opinion i prefer dido sings some notes completely even, and doesnt play around with the notes that much. if you do that to some old classic the identity of how it sounded gets lost a bit for me. he sings it a bit too snappy for me here.
@@coooolibri 8 months later. Dido definitely owns the song, no doubt about it. Ser EJ, though, does an absolutely fantastic job here adding his touch to it
He flipped off the cameras because of him knowing the controversy that would surround Elton John and him performing together, so he’s not flipping off the audience but instead the journalists.
i remember when this was broadcasted 20 yr ago i was 11, eminem got a rap for being homophobic, then elton started playing, it was a "big deal". love it❤ how much has changed
Dude, it was insane. At that time, Eminem was mister controversial, media tried to cancel him, tried to not playing his songs and cause Em said a few things in his songs, people called him homophobic. That he got Elton John to perform with him and they becoming very good friends and are still to this day, it was HUGE and shut people up
Iconic performance. I honestly think Em performed this better live at the Grammys than he did on the album itself. Much more emotion here.. especially in that third verse. 🔥🔥
Correct...like mac donalds or Ikea put some sugar in it and the mainstream will consume it...such poor quality...brainless and zero talent. filling their pockets..only thing that concers them..buying gucci toilet paper or something
@@jordanspencer7992 there’s still plenty of lyrical rappers. Rap has become such a big genre that most listeners are casual and don’t listen to lyrics that much and just want catchy lyrics
Eminem went from rapping, "You think I give a damn about a Grammy? Half of you critics can't even stomach me, let alone stand me"....to performing at the Grammys, and collecting a total of 15 up to this point for himself.
Both "Stan" and "The Real Slim Shady" appeared on the same album though, namely "The Marshal Mathers LP", so that's not really valid, as you surely can see, friend
@@CellarDoorx06 Hey, it wasn't me who didn't check the facts. Mistakes can be made: you can fudge up spelling or grammar and it wouldn't affect the message you're trying to convey. But factual mistakes are the worst kind - they twist the actual data and depict you in unfavourable light. As a translator I was taught to avoid them at [almost] any cost. So, I know that its better to check your info twice before putting it into words. Wishing you all the best in the future!😀
@Kirill Nalivaiko infinity's facts are still valid though? Eminem released the real slim shady first and afterwards he went to perform at the grammys (unless he performed at the grammys sometime before he released the real slim shady but idk about that)
Happened to be in the crowd during this performance, we literally had no idea Elton was going to also perform, everyone was so shocked but Em stole the show
This proformance is legendary! I remember how controversial it was for EJ and Em… because Eminem is Eminem. EJ understood what an artist writes and singing about isn’t them, he also saved Em’s life after his OD. Mad respect for both.
imagine a day where you could be able to express yourself by saying whatever the hell you want on the grammys and mainstream media. Think about it this way, eminem got as big as he with cussing. So why should he censor something that is apart of what got him nominated in the first place
@@ripwakez955 I mean, Will Smith didn't have to cuss in his raps to sell records.... so. But then again, I can just imagine that Eminem would say something like "well I do, so fuck him and fuck you too!"
This is one of those moments that people who weren't around then can't appreciate how big culturally this was at the time, this was such a huge moment in music that helped move things forward and changed people's perception on em and the genre as a whole. 23 years later and the culture calls obsessive fans stans and has been for years
I thought it was pretty choppy. But almost every comment here is going on about how great Elton was. I like the original better, but Elton John f*cking rules (more as a solo artist than doing the chorus for Em.) I’m glad he performed with Em, but the contrast of Dido’s very smooth voice sounds better to me with this song. I’m glad everyone else loved Elton’s version though. Hopefully a lot of new people discovered his old songs through this. ❤
You know it must be said how great on the fly Eminem can clean up most of the swears. That's not easy to do when you're used to writing and performing a certain way. Your muscle memory doesn't necessarily stop and think "change the word". So bravo. And beautiful with Elton John
@@kevinwalsh4652bernie taupin never worked with the music it was only his lyrics you buffoon. elton composed all the music to his lyrics in a matter of minutes in fact
@@kevinwalsh4652Bernie writes the lyrics of Elton’s songs, Elton writes the music so he’s the one who came up w the arrangement and how it’s played here
Eminem has such power and emotion behind his voice. Stan is one of the saddest but most badass songs ever created. Eminem is such a master of his craft. Nobody like Em ❤️
All the people slating Eminem for being homophobic at the time so he goes and pulls one of the biggest icons in the scene to perform with him at the biggest live gig he had done at the time was massive. This was such a power move and I have nothing but respect for him for doing it.
ooooooooooh. i might have to disagree. his most unique to me is hailie's song. very vulnerable, especially in a time the media was tearing him to shreds, and he tried to do something new as he never really sang instead of rapped before. stan is beautiful too though.
I think a lot of people don’t realize how big this was at the time. Eminem, with his obvious history talking about gays in his music, publicly acknowledging he was wrong and embracing Elton John. They’re still extremely close to this day.
I discovered Em through a small radio i had back in 2004 i didnt know english back then but somehow i was just blown away since then he is my idol his music got me through all kinds of tough times
This is why curtain call: the hits was, and still is one of my all time favorite greatest hits albums ever. It included this at the end of the cd... Two exclusive tracks i think, but i do remember hearing this one on the cd... Real beautiful
What an astonishing performance even all these years later. Stan is an icon and having Sir Elton John collaborating is still amazing after all this time. 🎉
