This song is also PRODUCED by Eminem. Fun fact: the following is an annotation Em himself put on his Genius lyrics for this song. ''This is where I was dealing with critics who didn’t understand why people were identifying with me. I realized I was becoming like the rappers that I looked up to as a kid. I identified with and loved LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. I felt like if everybody didn’t understand their music, it didn’t matter - they were speaking to me. So that’s what I was trying to make people realize on this track. I may not be shit to you, but there’s a kid in fucking Nebraska, or somewhere, that I’m talking to. I don’t care if you’re listening, because he’s listening. That’s who I’m directing my material at.''

Yep. I was 16 when this song came out and my dad was an abusive alcoholic. We lived in a middle class suburb of Detroit, so I “Stan’d” a little harder than most...especially back then. But I remember I was fortunate enough to have a walk in closet. I would take my CD Walkman into the closet and lock myself in when my dad started to get violent. When this came out, this song was on repeat for months until court ordered me to go live with my grandpa. Exactly why some of us defend him so vehemently.

The hook was actually sampled from Aerosmith's "Dream On" and they (Aerosmith) were quite surprised and happy to hear that he wanted to use it on the track at the time. The coolest thing was that Aerosmith was on tour with Rum D.M.C at the time who had collaborated with them on Walk this Way, a track that kinda really opened up collabs of this kind to take shape and happen more often.

🔥 react as usual. . Kinda what you were talkin about at the end. Is why i get so pissed off when people just hate 4 the sake of hating. He's insane with all the technical aspects of rap. Pays homage constantly to those that came b4 him & influenced him. And he's got so much content for his fan base that even though you might not be able to relate everything that's he went through etc. He's been through so much that, it be literally impossible to not be able to relate to some of the things he's been though & he's always done inspirational type of ish like this that anyone going thru some struggles can use him as inspiration to not give up.. not on your dreams & aspirations. Not if you came from a broken home, had real wife or gf drama or if you've gone through or going through addiction. That's 1 of the reasons why he has some of if not the most rabid fan bases because he's helped a lot of people get thru hard times & low moments, cause he's went thru them & was able to keep fighting & doing what he's always loved to do.. which is just to spit..

I remember when these songs were coming out, noone in my school spoke any English, they had no idea what Em was rapping about but he was the most popular artist back in those times. So its not always his content, his rhyme schemes and his rap style sounds sooo good when you don't know know the language. Em had an amazing flow and sound during the eminem show-8 mile-encore times. He sort of lost that with relapse. I think his lyrics are better now than they were then, he's just in a different league rn, but in terms of how that sounded if youre not listening to the lyrics, he sort of lost it to a degree. My point is though, when you were talking about how Em fans were able to relate to what Em was rapping about in this song, its not just that. Maybe its more difficult to hear when you know the entire history of rap and so many artists and songs, but combining Em's syllabic rhyming, amazing flow, theatric use of voice and made by or inspired by dre beats and production, Em's shit during that era just sounded amazing. People consider MMLP his best album but that was not as popular with people that do not understand lyrics. I think this is an interesting perspective that I've always thought about from time to time

It's awesome to watch your journey through Em's discography, get to know him through his music, and really understand what he's been through. Also, about Eminem himself, I love the fact that he got famous, essentially just by telling us his story, telling us about his life, how fucked up it's been, and us relating to him so much. It's powerful stuff. And yeah, he has some silly songs here and there, but hey man, we all gotta loose a bit sometimes. And at least most of the time he's pretty funny on those :P

One of the greatest Eminem songs of all time. Verse 2 and 3 are among some of the best Em verses. There are few songs that can provoke as much emotion as this one for me.

Going to be honest.you have really helped me start paying attention to the message behind the words of songs instead of just hearing how it sounds. I enjoy watching your reactions. I hope you do a reaction soon to some of Knox hill music on RU-vid .

The Chorus is an Aerosmith sample from the song dream on. Well actually the whole song is besides Eminems rhymes.

Such an amazing collaboration I love that Aerosmith signed off on this song so Em could have Steven Tyler's amazing vocals as punctuation for his bars.

Oh man, how nostalgic. This should have been on that golden disc NASA sent to space. If another civilization ever discovers us I want them to know that thís is what an Earth anthem sounds like! 🚀👽🔥

He had on a Jordon North Carolina sock hat !! Love it . He is the Michael Jordon of the rap/hip hop world !! I mean he’s the first rapper to win an Oscar !! He’s just so good .. I use to think he was a punk .. then I started actually listening to his music and realized he’s not a punk but he’s a genius.. he was immature at first but still a great lyricist .. but I watched and heard him mature in his music so much . He’s unique because his imagination is unbelievable. Dude is a GOAT . No doubt !! He earned people’s respect and it was a very hard ride for him ..
